D ., choosing it as an opportunity for his investment and first official visit to tho Province . Lodge was opened at three o ' clock , in tho Board Room of the

Corn Exchange , Chelmsford , and Bro . Philbrick having been received with the honours clue to his exalted rank iu tho Craft , the V . W . Bro . Sir R . Wigratn , the retiring D . P . G . M ., who presided , called upon Wor . Bro . T . J . Railing P . G . Sec , to read tho patent of appointment . This having been done , Bro . Wigratn , in a few well-chosen

words , proceeded to iuvest Bro . Philbrick with tho insignia of his office , congratulating him upon his appointment , and expressing a hope that ho might long be spared to give his valuable services to the Province . Bro . Philbrick , in reply , thanked the brethren for the hearty greeting they had given fiirn . He said , as an Essex mrm he

was very proud of ibe post ho had beeu so unexpectedly called on to fill , and , while feeling tlie difficulty of succeeding so affable , genifj , and worthy a predecessor , promised to his utmost to servo tho Craft in Essex . At the close of tho ceremony , a cordial vote of thanks to the Installing Master was passed by acclamation , and ordered to be recorded on the minutes . A vote of thanks to tho D . P . G . M ., for having chosen that occasion for his first visit to the Province after receiving his appointment , was also unanimously carried ; and , in reply , W . Bro .

Philbrick took occasion to refer not only to tho pleasure it afforded him to be amongst them , but also to find tho working of the Lodge so thoroughly good . It was announced that a cheque for £ 150 had been received from tho Board of Benevolence for a late momber of the Lodge , whose necessities had been brought before the notice of the Board by the Lodge of Good Fellowship . At the conclusion of the

business , tho brethren adjourned to the White Hart Hotel , where between fifty and sixty sat down to a sumptuous repast , served in first-class style by the host , Bro . Sheldrake . In the course of the post prandial proceedings , the "Health of the P . D . P . G . M . and Installing Master " was heartily drunk . The W . M ., who proposed the toast , taking occasion to express the satisfaction they had all felt at the

courteons and kindly manner in whioh Bro . Wigratn had carried out his official dnties , and how muoh they regretted his severance from the Proviuce . Bro . Wigratn , in responding , said the Masons of Essex had always received him so kindly that his office had been one of great pleasure to him , and he felt a considerable amount of regret that oircumstances compelled him to lay it down . Being himself an

Essex man , he should always watch with interest the progress of Masonry in the Province ; and he hoped he should be permitted from time to time to come amongst them . Bro . Philbrick ' s health was also drunk , the Worshipful Master remarking that he was sure the welcome the Deputy Provincial Grand Master had received that day was only an earnest of what he would receive all through the

Province , where his distinguished Masonic career was known and appreciated . The D . P . G . M . replied at some length , dilating upon the excellency of the Institution of Freemasonry , and expressing au earnest hope that his acceptance of the post he had taken would never be regretted by any one of the Masons of Essex . The other Masonic toasts were given and duly responded to , and a well selected

programme of vocal music interspersed the proceedings which were of a most interesting and harmonious character . D ., choosing it as an opportunity for his investment and first official visit to tho Province . Lodge was opened at three o ' clock , in tho Board Room of the

Corn Exchange , Chelmsford , and Bro . Philbrick having been received with the honours clue to his exalted rank iu tho Craft , the V . W . Bro . Sir R . Wigratn , the retiring D . P . G . M ., who presided , called upon Wor . Bro . T . J . Railing P . G . Sec , to read tho patent of appointment . This having been done , Bro . Wigratn , in a few well-chosen

words , proceeded to iuvest Bro . Philbrick with tho insignia of his office , congratulating him upon his appointment , and expressing a hope that ho might long be spared to give his valuable services to the Province . Bro . Philbrick , in reply , thanked the brethren for the hearty greeting they had given fiirn . He said , as an Essex mrm he

was very proud of ibe post ho had beeu so unexpectedly called on to fill , and , while feeling tlie difficulty of succeeding so affable , genifj , and worthy a predecessor , promised to his utmost to servo tho Craft in Essex . At the close of tho ceremony , a cordial vote of thanks to the Installing Master was passed by acclamation , and ordered to be recorded on the minutes . A vote of thanks to tho D . P . G . M ., for having chosen that occasion for his first visit to the Province after receiving his appointment , was also unanimously carried ; and , in reply , W . Bro .

Philbrick took occasion to refer not only to tho pleasure it afforded him to be amongst them , but also to find tho working of the Lodge so thoroughly good . It was announced that a cheque for £ 150 had been received from tho Board of Benevolence for a late momber of the Lodge , whose necessities had been brought before the notice of the Board by the Lodge of Good Fellowship . At the conclusion of the

business , tho brethren adjourned to the White Hart Hotel , where between fifty and sixty sat down to a sumptuous repast , served in first-class style by the host , Bro . Sheldrake . In the course of the post prandial proceedings , the "Health of the P . D . P . G . M . and Installing Master " was heartily drunk . The W . M ., who proposed the toast , taking occasion to express the satisfaction they had all felt at the

courteons and kindly manner in whioh Bro . Wigratn had carried out his official dnties , and how muoh they regretted his severance from the Proviuce . Bro . Wigratn , in responding , said the Masons of Essex had always received him so kindly that his office had been one of great pleasure to him , and he felt a considerable amount of regret that oircumstances compelled him to lay it down . Being himself an

Essex man , he should always watch with interest the progress of Masonry in the Province ; and he hoped he should be permitted from time to time to come amongst them . Bro . Philbrick ' s health was also drunk , the Worshipful Master remarking that he was sure the welcome the Deputy Provincial Grand Master had received that day was only an earnest of what he would receive all through the

Province , where his distinguished Masonic career was known and appreciated . The D . P . G . M . replied at some length , dilating upon the excellency of the Institution of Freemasonry , and expressing au earnest hope that his acceptance of the post he had taken would never be regretted by any one of the Masons of Essex . The other Masonic toasts were given and duly responded to , and a well selected

programme of vocal music interspersed the proceedings which were of a most interesting and harmonious character .
