ANGEL LODGE , No . 51 . THE monthly meeting was held on Thursday , 23 rd ult ., when there was a large attendance of members and visitors . An interesting feature of the proceedings was the presentation to Bro . Claude E . Egerton-Green I . P . M . P . P . G . Treas . ( Deputy-Mayor of Colchester ) of a memento of his year of office as W . M ., subscribed for by the members . This took the form of an 18 carat gold jewel of Past Provincial Grand Treasurer of Essex and an illuminated address .

The presentation was made by Brother Adolphus E . Church P . M . P . P . J . G . W . ( Clerk of the Peace ) in a happy speech . He said he presumed he had been selected for this pleasant duty owing to the fact that he was the senior P . M . now a member of the Lodge , it having been thirty-four years since he occupied the chair ; and all the Brethren who were present on the occasion of his installation had now passed away . Having recalled the fact that several members of the Angel Lodge had been Mayor of the Borough ,

mentioning Bros . S . Chaplin , Thomas Moy , and the present Mayor , James Wicks ( the two latter of which he was glad to see present ) Bro . Church said that he doubted if any Lodge in the country could boast of having both the Mayor and Deputy-Mayor as members . As regards their I . P . M ., it was well known that shortly after his installation as W . M . he was elected Mayor of the Borough , and it was feared that the innumerable duties which that office demanded would prevent his giving his attention to those of the Lodge . But so far from that having been the case , Bro . Egerton-Green had thrown the

greatest possible energy into his Masonic duties , with the result that the year had been one of the most successful experienced by the Lodge . After humorously expressing regret that the members had not had the opportunity of presenting him with a silver cradle during his year of office , Bro . Church said the Brethren had felt that they should like to present him with some little memento , and therefore asked him to accept the jewel of a Past Provincial Grand Treasurer and the illuminated and framed address ; aud all he could add was , " God bless you , and may you live long to look upon these evidences of the good feeling of the Brethren of your Lodge . "

Bro . Claude Egerton-Green , who had been taken completely by surprise , was loudly cheered on rising to acknowledge the gift . He thanked Brother Church for the kind way in which he had spoken , and the Brethren for the beautiful gifts they had made him , which would be always looked on by him as amongst his most cherished possessions . He felt a great interest in Freemasonry , and was glad that the experience he had gained as fir . st Master of the Colne Lodge had stood him in such good stead as W . M . of the mother Lodge of the Province .

The illuminated address , which was greatly admired , was the work of Bro . Octavius Railing , of Exeter . It was as follows : —

Presented to W . Buo . CLAUDE E . EGEBTON-GREEN I . P . M . 51 P . M . 2477 P . P . G . Treas . Essex , together with a gold jewel of Past Provincial Grand Treasurer , by the Brethren of the Angel Lodge , No . 51 , as a mark of their appreciation of his devotion to the interests of the Lodge , during his Mayoralty , 1894-5 . Colchester , 23 rd January 1896 . Then followed the names of fifty-one subscribers .
