GRAND LODGE

THE Quarterly Communication of tho Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of South Australia was held at tho Freomasons' Hall , Flinders Street , Adelaide , on Wednesday evening , 18 th January last . The Pro Grand Master ( His Honour the Chief Justice ) presided . The Board of General Purposes stated iu their report : —

The United Service Lodge , No . 37 , have temporarily surrendered their warrant and resolved to go into recess for twelve months . The Grand Inspector of Lodges supplied a report upon the Lodge of Instruction , which was "dopted by the Board . The furnishing of the Grand Secretary ' s ra has been authorised by the Board and

completed . The office . now occupied . The Board are pleased to intimate that one of the daughters of the late Bro . J . H . H . Vockins has been elected for admission into the Royal Masonio Institution for Girls in England , and her education and maintenance thus assured . The Grand Lodge of Connecticut having expressed a desire

for the exohange of Grand Representatives , and having snggested the name of M . W . Bro . Hugh Stirling Grand Master for election as the Bepresentative of the Grand Lodge of South Australia near the Grand Lodge of Connecticut , the Board recommend that he be elected , and also that the name of W . Brother Louis von Doussa be suggested

for election as the Bepresentative of the Grand Lodge of Connecticut near this Grand Lodge . Daring the quarter the Board have from the Benevolent Funds of Grand Lodge relioved a number of cases of distress . The Board recommend that the sum of £ 5 5 s each be voted annually to the Convalescent Hospital and the Home for Incurables .

The report , which also referred to other matters concerning the working of the Craft , was adopted . Brother the Hon . Dr . Harman J . Tarrant was re-elected as the

Representative of the Grand Lodge near the Grand Lodge of New South Wales . Nominations were received for the election of Grand Lodge Officers , members of the Board of General Purposes , and two Auditors .

The monthly meeting of the Board of Benevolence waa held on Wednesday , the 22 nd ult ., at Freemasons' Hall . Bro . R . Grey President of the Board presided , and the Senior and Junior Vice-Presidents , Bros . James Brett and C . A . Cottebrune , occupied their usual positions . Bros . E .

£ 310 . There were 59 cases on the new list , which were qualifiod through Lodges in the London district , and at Aldershot , Combermere , New South Wales , Secunderabad , Woking , Newcastle-under-Lyme , Brixham , Manchester , Chatham , Brecon , Newcastle-on-Tyne , High Wycombe ,

Cardiff , Spalding , Agra , Northwich , Slaidburn , Whitehaven , Ross , ) Exeter , Budleigh , Salterton , Faringdon , Baredly , Haworth , Boston , Barnstaple , Plymouth , Little hampton , Cowes , Barrow-in-Furness , Liverpool , Bromley ( Kent ) , Walton-on-Naze , Wigan , and Amlwch . In the

consideration of these cases the Board sat more than fivt hours . Five of the cases were deferred , being incomplete , and three were dismissed . The remainder were relieved with a total of £ 1 , 225 . There were four recommendations )

to Grand Lodge of £ 50 each , six recommendations to the Grand Master of £ 40 each , and eleven of £ 30 each . Seven grants wore made of £ 20 each , ten of £ 10 each , and three of £ 5 each .

BRO . W . WILLIAMS .

THE funeral of Brother W . Williams , a member of Lodgo Huyshe , No . 1090 , and of the Plymouth Plasterers' Society , took place on Wednesday , the 22 nd ult ., at the Plymouth Cemotery . Several monibsrs of the Lodge were prosent ,

with a noraber of the deceased ' s fellow workmen , who acted as bearew . Deceased leaves a widow and four young children . The cofhu , whioh was covered with a number of beautiful wreaths , was of polished elm , with plated fittings and engraved breastplate .

DEVON MASONIC EDUCATIONAL FUND .

THE General Purposes Committee of the Devon Masonio Eduoational Fund met on the 21 st ult ., at the Freemasons' Hall , Plymonth , Brother J . R . Lord Treasurer to the Fand presiding . There were also present Brothers J . B . Gover Secretary , H . Steele , S . Jew , J . Griffin , R . Pengelly , J . Gidley , J . Leonard , W . Ashford , C . Mutten , E . M . Ellis , and W . H . Dillon . The Secretary announced that three candidates for election on the Fund who were onBuccess .

fal at tho meeting m October last were still eligible , one of them bringing forward 316 votes , a second 272 , and a third 28 votes . Ia addition two further applications have been received , one in rospect of tho child of a deceased Brother from Torquay , aud the other on

behalf of a child of a deceased Brother of Benevolent Lodge , Prince , town , making fivo candidates for tho two vacancies to be filled at the forthcoming meeting . It was decided to put tbe whole of the names on the list , and the election will take place at Plymouth on the first Tuesday in April .

MEMORIAL TO THE LATE SIR FRANCIS BURDETT .

MESSRS . WHITEHEAD & SONS , of the Granite Works , Aberdeen , will in tho course of a few days erect in the churchyard o t Foremark , Derbyshire , a very handsome memorial , composed of polished red grauite , Sicilian white marble aud stone , with a bronze raised recumbent cross . Tho inscription to be plucod upon tbe memorial reads as follows : — " Iu loving memory of Francis Burdett ,

7 th Bart ., late Lieutenant-Colonel 17 th Lancers , and Colonel Her M'ljefty ' s Gaards ; 1 st Provincial Grand Master of Freemasons in Middlest-x , 1-t Provincial Grand Murk Master Mason for Middlesex

and Surrey ; representative from Grand Lodgo of Ireland at the Grand Lodgo of England ; Inspector-Generul 33 rd Degree Ancient and Accepted Rite . Boru 23 rd March 1813 j died 31 st May 1892 . '' As in Adam all die , even so in Christ shall all be made alive . ' "

Royal Aquarium . —Lovers of the sensational will find plenty of excaeineut at the Aquarium during tho Easter holidays , some of the feats being highly hazardous and extremely daugerous . The management , however , is careful to intersperse the sensational with a , varied programme , embracing almost every form of variety , including the fisheries and theatrical exhibitions .
