A MEETING , unique in the history of the Craft , took place on Tuesday afternoon , the 20 tb ult ., at the Masonio Temple , St . Peter ' s Streot , Canterbury , there being held a united Lodge meeting , convened hy the W . M . ' s of the three Canterbury Lodges , viz ., the United Industrious Lodge , No . 31 , the Si * . Augustine ' s Lodge , No . 972 , the Itoyal Military Lodge , No . 1440 , for tb « purpose of presenting an address , clothing , and jewels , subscribed for by

several of his Masonio friends , lo Bro . If . Ward , on his receiving an appointment hi Grand Lodge and Supreme Grand Chapter of Eugland . The W . M . ' s of Lodges 31 , 972 , aud 1449 occupied respectively the chairs of W . M ., S . W ., aud J . W ., whilst tbo rest of tbe offices were filled by representatives of the whole of the different Lodgea or Cbapt ° rs meeting in Canterbury . The presentation waa made by the

Deputy Provincial Grand Master ( Bro . J . S . Eastes P . G . D . Eng . ) . The following is a copy of tho illuminated address which bad been beautifully executed by the artist ( Mr . S . Beall ) , the bordering being made to represent the collars of Grand Lodge and Grand Chapter , whilst at the top corners were emblems of the jewels of oflico , and the bottom corners were those of a P . G . D . of Mark Master Masons and P . G . Councillor of the Secret Monitor j at tho sides were emblems of all the Lodges meeting at the Masonio Temple .

Swd . ll . the Address , together with the clothing and jewels subscribed for by tho brethren . Bro . II . Ward thanked the brethren for thoir handsome present . After tho Lodgo was closed the brethren adjourned to tho Royal Fountain Hotel , where a sumptuous suppor had been provided . The Deputy

Provincial Grand Master presided and the brethren , numbering upwards of seventy-five , spent a most enjoyable evening . The nsual Masonio toasts wero given and duly honoured , the toast of the evening being of course that of tho health of the honoured guest Bro . Horatio Ward ; it was proposed by tbe worthy chairman , Bro . Eastes , who spoke in highest terms of Bro . Ward ' s Masonio career and the

great pleasure the Craft had experienced at the high and dignified honour conferred npon him . This was received in the heartiest and most enthusiastic manner tbe brethren were capable of exhibiting , coupled with Kentish lire and ending with musical honours well led by Bro . J . Plant P . P . G . Orgt . Tbe evening was a most enjoyable

and harmonious one , enhanced by some excellent glees and songs contributed by the musical brethren—Bros . Plant , Pearson , Higgins and Rhoies . Tbe brethren separate ! shortly after 10 o ' clock , having enjoyed a most delightful evening , whioh will be long remembered as a red letter day in Kentish Masonry .

The following is a brief record of Bro . Horatio Ward a Masonic career . He was initiated into Freemasonry in St . Cuthberga Lodgo , No . 622 , Wimborne , Dorset , in the year 1859 . After filling the various offices was installed W . M . in 1865 . In the same year he joined tho Elias do Dei-ham Lodge , No . 586 , Salisbury , of which Lodge he was elected VV . M . in 1870 , and again iu 1871 . In 1866 was

a founder and Iirst W . M . of the Vale of Avon Lodge , No . 1122 ( now tho Sbirely Lodge , Southampton ) . In 1872 was appointed to the chair of Provincial Grand Junior Warden of Wilts ; and at the installation of tho Princo of Wales aa Grand Master , in 1875 , acted as one of the special Stewards for the Proviuc-, and was presented iu Provincial Graud Lodge by the P . G . M . with the jewel , which all

the special Stewards on that occasion were authorised to wear . Iu 1876 he removed to Canterbury , and received a very cordial reception from the brethren in that city . In 1878 Bro . Ward took a prominent part in removing the Lodges to private premises , which resulted in tho erection , in 1880 , of the Masonio Temple , whioh is justly allowed to be one of the most perfect edifices in the United Kingdom ; in

1881 Bro . Ward assisted in founding the Greystone Lodge , No . 1915 , Whitstable , acting as the I . P . M . for the first two years j in 1883 was elected W . M . of the United Industrious Lodge , No . 31 , and was appointed Provincial Grand Junior Warden of Kent in 1885 . In Royal Arch Masonry Bro . Ward has taken a very high position j he was exalted in the Amity Chapter , Poolo , in 1863 ; was one of the

founders of the St . Cuthberga Chapter , No . 622 , Wimborn- * , and iu 1868 was elected and installed M . E . Z . ; he is also a founder and P . Z . of the Eli-is de Derham Chapter , No . 536 , Salisbury , aud also a founder of the Harmony Chapter , No . 632 , Devizes ( but formerly of Trowbridge ) ; ho took au active pa't in promoting the formation of tho Provincial Grand Chapter of Wiltshire . In the Province of Kent ho is tho principal founder of the Bertha Chapter , No . 31 , Canter .

Wilts . Bro . Ward is also a member of the

Ancient and Accepted Ribe , having been prefected a member of the Rose Croix Chapter , St . Peter and Paul , B -th , in 1869 j was one of tbe founders of the Etbelbert Chapter Rose Croix , Canterbury , iu 1878 ; took the 30 th degree in 1879 , and in 1897 the Supreme Council confurred npon him tho 31 st degree ; he is also P . M . VVS . of the Chapter ; ho is also one of the founders of tho Crjoir de Lion Chapter Hose

Crois , of which he is an honorary member ; he is also a Knight Templar and Past Prior of Malta ; was the founder and first Eminent Preceptor of the Black Prince Preceptory , Canterbury ; is a Past Grand Sword Bearer of Great Pricry . aud Sab-Prior of the United Provinces of Kent and Surrey . In Mark Masonry Bro . Ward was advanced to the Mark degree in the Lodgo of Economy , No . 52 , Winchester , in the

year 1871 ; id a founder of the St . Martin's Mark Lodge , No . 262 , Canterbury , aud a Fust Prov . G . S . W . Kent , and was invested by H . R . H . the Prince of Wales with the collar of Junior Mark Deacon of England . He ia also a Royal Ark Mariner ; iu 1887 he took the degrees of Royal , Salect , aud Super Excellent Master , and iu 1888 became one of tho founders and first T . I . M . of the Iuvieta Council

of Cryptic degrees in Canterbury , and is a Past Grand Officer of tho Grand Council of England . He is likewise a member of the Allied Masonic Degreef , Sfc . Lawrence tho Martyr , Knight of Constantinople , Knight of the Re J Cross of Bibylou and Great High Priest , and Past Grand Junior Warden iu tho Grand Council in England ; ho is also a member of tho Order of tho Secret Monitor and a Past Grand

Councillor of tho Order ; is als *> a member of tin Royal O .-tler of Scotland , aud a l' . ii-t Grand Ollieer of the Province of London and Metropolitan Distii : ' . Brother Ward is au honorary member of Lodges Nos . 586 , 622 , 1112 , 1-119 , 1915 , 1965 , 2099 , 2147 , 2148 , 2195 , 2200 ; haa alao bu-ju honoured with many tokens of respect and esteem from many Lodges and Chapters wih which he has been associated ,

having been called upon to act aa Director of Ceremonies nt tho consecration of runny Lodges aud Chapters iu Wiltshire and Kent during tho past thir ty years . He is a Life Governor of all tho throe Inatitulions ; has served the otlice of Steward for the Girls' and Boya ' Institutions , and three Stewardships for tho Benevolent Institution ; ia also a Vive-President of the M >* rk Beuovoleut Institution , foi which he baa served three times au Steward .

After tho Lodgo was closed the brethren adjourned to tho Royal Fountain Hotel , where a sumptuous suppor had been provided . The Deputy

Provincial Grand Master presided and the brethren , numbering upwards of seventy-five , spent a most enjoyable evening . The nsual Masonio toasts wero given and duly honoured , the toast of the evening being of course that of tho health of the honoured guest Bro . Horatio Ward ; it was proposed by tbe worthy chairman , Bro . Eastes , who spoke in highest terms of Bro . Ward ' s Masonio career and the

great pleasure the Craft had experienced at the high and dignified honour conferred npon him . This was received in the heartiest and most enthusiastic manner tbe brethren were capable of exhibiting , coupled with Kentish lire and ending with musical honours well led by Bro . J . Plant P . P . G . Orgt . Tbe evening was a most enjoyable

and harmonious one , enhanced by some excellent glees and songs contributed by the musical brethren—Bros . Plant , Pearson , Higgins and Rhoies . Tbe brethren separate ! shortly after 10 o ' clock , having enjoyed a most delightful evening , whioh will be long remembered as a red letter day in Kentish Masonry .

The following is a brief record of Bro . Horatio Ward a Masonic career . He was initiated into Freemasonry in St . Cuthberga Lodgo , No . 622 , Wimborne , Dorset , in the year 1859 . After filling the various offices was installed W . M . in 1865 . In the same year he joined tho Elias do Dei-ham Lodge , No . 586 , Salisbury , of which Lodge he was elected VV . M . in 1870 , and again iu 1871 . In 1866 was

a founder and Iirst W . M . of the Vale of Avon Lodge , No . 1122 ( now tho Sbirely Lodge , Southampton ) . In 1872 was appointed to the chair of Provincial Grand Junior Warden of Wilts ; and at the installation of tho Princo of Wales aa Grand Master , in 1875 , acted as one of the special Stewards for the Proviuc-, and was presented iu Provincial Graud Lodge by the P . G . M . with the jewel , which all

the special Stewards on that occasion were authorised to wear . Iu 1876 he removed to Canterbury , and received a very cordial reception from the brethren in that city . In 1878 Bro . Ward took a prominent part in removing the Lodges to private premises , which resulted in tho erection , in 1880 , of the Masonio Temple , whioh is justly allowed to be one of the most perfect edifices in the United Kingdom ; in

1881 Bro . Ward assisted in founding the Greystone Lodge , No . 1915 , Whitstable , acting as the I . P . M . for the first two years j in 1883 was elected W . M . of the United Industrious Lodge , No . 31 , and was appointed Provincial Grand Junior Warden of Kent in 1885 . In Royal Arch Masonry Bro . Ward has taken a very high position j he was exalted in the Amity Chapter , Poolo , in 1863 ; was one of the

founders of the St . Cuthberga Chapter , No . 622 , Wimborn- * , and iu 1868 was elected and installed M . E . Z . ; he is also a founder and P . Z . of the Eli-is de Derham Chapter , No . 536 , Salisbury , aud also a founder of the Harmony Chapter , No . 632 , Devizes ( but formerly of Trowbridge ) ; ho took au active pa't in promoting the formation of tho Provincial Grand Chapter of Wiltshire . In the Province of Kent ho is tho principal founder of the Bertha Chapter , No . 31 , Canter .

M . VVS . of the Chapter ; ho is also one of the founders of tho Crjoir de Lion Chapter Hose

Crois , of which he is an honorary member ; he is also a Knight Templar and Past Prior of Malta ; was the founder and first Eminent Preceptor of the Black Prince Preceptory , Canterbury ; is a Past Grand Sword Bearer of Great Pricry . aud Sab-Prior of the United Provinces of Kent and Surrey . In Mark Masonry Bro . Ward was advanced to the Mark degree in the Lodgo of Economy , No . 52 , Winchester , in the

year 1871 ; id a founder of the St . Martin's Mark Lodge , No . 262 , Canterbury , aud a Fust Prov . G . S . W . Kent , and was invested by H . R . H . the Prince of Wales with the collar of Junior Mark Deacon of England . He ia also a Royal Ark Mariner ; iu 1887 he took the degrees of Royal , Salect , aud Super Excellent Master , and iu 1888 became one of tho founders and first T . I . M . of the Iuvieta Council

of Cryptic degrees in Canterbury , and is a Past Grand Officer of tho Grand Council of England . He is likewise a member of the Allied Masonic Degreef , Sfc . Lawrence tho Martyr , Knight of Constantinople , Knight of the Re J Cross of Bibylou and Great High Priest , and Past Grand Junior Warden iu tho Grand Council in England ; ho is also a member of tho Order of tho Secret Monitor and a Past Grand
