I ^^^^^^^ SATUEDAY , 1 ST SEPTEMBER 1894 .

New South Wales.

NEW SOUTH WALES .

A SPECIAL Communication of the United Grand Lodge of New South Wales was held in the Masonic Hall , Sydney , on Thursday , 19 th July , for the purpose of installing the Grand Master , and investing

the Officers . The gathering was large and the ceremony most imposing . The Governor , Sir Eobert Duff , was re-installed Grand Master , and announced that financially and numerically Freemasonry was in a flourishing

A sad association is attached to one of the grants recommended by the Board of Benevolence— £ 100 to a Brother who has died since the decision of the Board was arrived at . This Brother was one who took a great interest in the affairs of Freemasonry

during the period he was associated with it , and was among the most prominent in advocating relief for others , at the same time assisting in organising it ;

indeed , it may fairly be said he was a splendid exemplification of what a Freemason should be , and the misfortune that overcame him , and which induced the Board of Benevolence to recommend him so large

a grant as £ 100 , must be regretted by all who knew him . It is some consolation to know that Freemasonry attempted to assist him in his hour of need , and sad to think he should have passed away while his grant was being confirmed , as we are convinced it would have been , in the ordinary way on being

submitted to the ruling power of the Craft . As showing the respect in which our late Brother was held we notice that the Mark Benevolent Fund also made him a grant , so that it is to be hoped that his closing hours were spent with the knowledge that Freemasonry , had not deserted him in his time of trial .

o o o The administrative directorate of Freemasonry in Berlin has just published some statistics as to the number of Masonic Lodges and of Brethren throughout

the entire world . According to these statistics , the number of Masonic Lodges in the various countries of the earth , in 1880 , was 135 , 065 . In the following

twelve years there was an increase of 4 , 320 Lodges ; and during the same period the number of Freemasons increased by 533 , 140 . The following are the grand totals of membership of the various bodies : —European

Lodges , 7 , 966 , 448 ; United States , 5 , 805 , 320 ; Lodges of Canada and South America , 4 , 581 , 238 ; Asia and Oceania , 695 , 955 ; Africa , including Egypt , 87 , 882 ; the total number of Freemasons is 21 , 861 , 784 . — "Leeds Mercury . "

o o o IN Indiana they are " as good as good can be . " The Grand Master recently respectfully declined an invitation—and very properly , too—to -lay a corner-stone on the Sabbath . On another

occasion he refused permission to confer the degrees of Masonry on an " importer and wholesale dealer in wines and liquors . " But the Grand Lodge of Colorado exceeds even this vigilance , and holds that a Lodge in Colorado cannot entertain a petition from a « ' stockholder in a brewery . " ,

o o o The cash contributions to the Masonic Home of Pennyslyvania on Donation Day amounted to 5 , 774 dols . A great quantity of provisions , coal , clothing , and literature was also given . " Voice of Masonry . "

condition in the colonies . He also expressed regret at the fact that Masonry had lost the services of the Pro Grand Master Dr . Tarrant , who had left the colony . Dr . Tarrant ' s successor has not yet been appointed , says the " Melbourne Age . "
