A SPECIAL Communication of the United Grand Lodge of New South Wales was held in the Masonic Hall , Sydney , on Thursday , 19 th July , for the purpose of installing the Grand Master , and investing
the Officers . The gathering was large and the ceremony most imposing . The Governor , Sir Eobert Duff , was re-installed Grand Master , and announced that financially and numerically Freemasonry was in a flourishing
A sad association is attached to one of the grants recommended by the Board of Benevolence— £ 100 to a Brother who has died since the decision of the Board was arrived at . This Brother was one who took a great interest in the affairs of Freemasonry
during the period he was associated with it , and was among the most prominent in advocating relief for others , at the same time assisting in organising it ;
indeed , it may fairly be said he was a splendid exemplification of what a Freemason should be , and the misfortune that overcame him , and which induced the Board of Benevolence to recommend him so large
a grant as £ 100 , must be regretted by all who knew him . It is some consolation to know that Freemasonry attempted to assist him in his hour of need , and sad to think he should have passed away while his grant was being confirmed , as we are convinced it would have been , in the ordinary way on being
submitted to the ruling power of the Craft . As showing the respect in which our late Brother was held we notice that the Mark Benevolent Fund also made him a grant , so that it is to be hoped that his closing hours were spent with the knowledge that Freemasonry , had not deserted him in his time of trial .

twelve years there was an increase of 4 , 320 Lodges ; and during the same period the number of Freemasons increased by 533 , 140 . The following are the grand totals of membership of the various bodies : —European
