Notices Of Meetings.
It was the general impression of the Past Masters that Bro . Edwards wonld conduct the Lodge in a manner that would tend to the happiness and comfort of the members . In reply , Bro . Edwards said if there waa one thing more than another he had looked forward to it was to be placed in the chair of that Lodge . He was surrounded by
many friends , and the hearty acclamations with which they had received allusion to his name gave him great enconragement . Theirs was a "banner" Lodge , and he flattered himself their respective banners produced a very pretty effect . The Lodge prided itself upon always giving a cordial reception to its visitors , and he
thanked the numerous body of guests who had attended to do honour to his installation . Before sitting down he would propose the next toast—the health of the Immediate Past Master , in whose footsteps he should strive to follow . He had been entrusted with a pleasing duty , that of investing Bro . Heath with a Past
Master ' s jewel , unanimously voted by tbe members of the Lodge . He wonld personally add that no Master could have been more worthy of the jewel and of their thanks . Bro . Heath , in a few graceful Sentences , thanked the brethren for the compliment paid him , and assured them of his continned interest in the working of the Lodge .
The Initiate was next complimented , whioh toast was also briefly acknowledged . The contents of the Charity box was , as is usual in this Lodge , put up to auction , and it realised the amount of £ 4 10 s . Bros . Von Joel , Bellerby and Hawkins responded to the toasfc of the Visitors , and then came the toast of the Past Masters , with which
was associated the health of the Treasurer and Secretary . This was duly acknowledged , and then was proposed the toast of the Officers of the Lodge , to whioh the Wardens replied , assuring the Worshipful Master of the interest they felt in their work . Brother Heok S . D . then desired to be allowed to make a few remarks . He thanked
the W . M . for the very eloquent and flattering manner in which he had proposed the toast , and thanked the Brethren for the cordial manner in which they had responded to it . The toast given in honour of the Officers is at all times received in this Lodge with a certain amount of interest : natural and easily understood when we consider
that the honour , the reputation and the well-being of the Lodge depends to a great extent on the efficiency of its Officers . He ( Bro . Heck ) had often heard it said that in the William Preston Lodge the members prided themselves on their good working ; how far they are justified in this was a question not for him to answer ; moreover ,
whether it is to the advantage and well-being of a Lodge that such expressions should too often come to the front is also a question . Undoubtedly , among the Officers are some who take a great interest in the working of the Lodge and the purity of the ritnal therein practised . All mast admire their zeal and assiduity . So long as
the Lodge selects from its members workers with the ability of Bro . Greenslade , the Junior Deacon , tbey may rest assured tbe work would be well done . To quote Bro . Greenslade's own words , when he said that whatever office he might be put into he would make it difficult for any other Brother to do it better : —an Officer who so exerts himself
cannot fail to do credit , and may feel entitled to the compliment just bestowed by the W . M . He ( Bro . Heck ) could scarcely hope successfully to compete with Bro . Greenslade . He was labouring under difficulties as regards our language , nofc thafc he wished to make that an excuse . A Brother accepting office shonld do his duties without
excuses . Moreover , having had tho honour to visit Lodges in this as well as in other countries , he found the ritual of Freemasonry varied , and perhaps he would be pronounced a bold man who would venture to say which version is correct . We call ourselves Freemasons ; even this name sounds well , bufc it should not
be the empty sound alone ; freedom of will shonld ever characterise all those who seek to be admitted , but let it be understood we are not free from the obligations we owe to the State ; each of us ought to be free from vanity and empty pride , free from egotism and selfishness , free from haughtiness , free from
envy and bad sense , free from ambition and dishonesty , and in full possession of the knowlege of ourselves . These are tenets which he trusted might be efficiently practised in the William Preston Lodge . After giving utterance to other excellent sentiments , Bro . Heck concluded by thanking the Worshipful Master for advancing him
as regards office in the Lodge , and assuring the brethren he would do all in his power fco sustain its efficiency . This concluding the programme of the day the Tyler was summoned , and the proceedings were brought to an end with the nsual toast . The musio of the evening was under the direction of Madame
Worrell , who was , as usual , most efficient in her work ; she was assisted by Madame Sutton Shepley , Bro Henry Guy , Bro . D . Sutton Shepley , and Mr . Lovett King . The menu card aud list of toasts for the meeting was a novelty , which calls for approval at our hands . On
the front was an excellent portrait of the W . M ., a fine example of one of the many new processes which have been introduced during the last year or so . The work was executed by Frank Harford , of 135 Fulham-road , who , we doubt nofc , will hear further from some of those who saw this specimen of his work .
