CHARITY BAH . —The members of the Humber Lodgo gavo thoir annnal ball at the Public Booms , Hnll , on the 21 st ult . It wa . * an unqualified success , and the proceeds , whioh must be considerable , aro to be devoted to different Charitable Institutions . Under tho supervision of Messrs . Edwin Davis aud Co ., the interior of tho hail had been entirely transformed , and the choice decorations , mingling

with the striking dresses of tbe ladies and the insignia of tho hrethren , combined to produce a scene of gracefulness and beauty . Ensconced in tho orchestra , wild almost hidden by foliage wu .-t Mr . Lax ' s County Band , who discoursed the latest tunes with ;\ sweetness which added greatly to fche enjoyment of tho dance Altogether , there were upwards of 180 present , including the Mayo . ' '

BRO . " Tho Mallet , " of the Eveniny News , Glasgow , thus writes of this deservedly esteemed Craftsman : — At the vory commencement of the aalf-imposed task ot writing a sketch of Brother William James Hughan , of Masonic literary fame , I despair of doing tha subject justice in the limited space at ray disposal . Brother Hughan's influence in Freemasonry is wide-spread

and weighty . It is nofc conhnorl to locality , but is folt aud appreciated wherever tho symbolism of the Craft is taught and its history road . As ono nf the pioneers of Masonio history , freo from tha trammels of credulity , he is interwoven in its pages , and his personality haa become ipso facto a part of it . Brothar Hughan ' a admission to Freemasonry dates from 1863 ,

when he was made in Lodgo St . Aubyn 954 ( B . C . ) . During theso 28 years he has accomplished a largo amount of arduous work in tho interest of the Craft in the elucidation cf abstruse problems ; by painstaking investigation in establishing or condemning on proof subjects iu its history that had hitherto been merely statements , without corroboration , and by bringing to light mnch that had been ,

cutil attracting his attention , hidden in dark places or seen only as throngh a glass darkly . He belongs to the Grand Lodges of England , Ireland , and Sootland ; but as an antiquarian and archaeologist , his special favourite , because of its old records , is Scotland . Bro . D . Murray Lyon , in hii "History" ( 1872 ) , says of Brother Hughan : — "In his writings

he has ever been careful to mark the distinction between matters that aro purely historical and those thafc aro merely legendary , aud in this respect has done muoh to dissipate the superstition which has so long enveloped Masorio history . " Brother W . Lake , to whose contribution in the Christmas nnmber of the " Freemason" ( 1889 ) I acknowledge myself indebted for

some of the facts of Brother Hnghan's connection with the Craft , says : — <; Thoso who have the privilege of a closer intimacy have a feeling of love and veneration for the man , who is ever ready to aid by pen and tongue the cause of universal brotherhood and charity . ... No sketch , however , of Brother Hughan could claim to be worthy of its subject without a kindly reference to the lady who

has shared his joys and sorrows , sympathised with him in his aspirations towards all thafc is good aud true , and ministered for nearly a quarter of a century to the needs of a frame never robust and often requiring weeks of constant care . " Brother Hughan has been identified with many philanthropic movemants other than Masonic , and for over thirty years has devoted

considerable time to the practical work of Sunday-school teaching . His labours in behalf of the Charities cf the Order are by no means the least important of his services . As a Steward , he achieved the distinction of taking up the largest single list of any one in England for one of tho Institutions . On removing from tho district in which his Mother Lodge was

located , he became a member and was elected Secretary of 331 , and , afterwards joining 131 , lie became Senior Warden , and in 1868 waa elected Bight Worshipful Master . Amongst the many Masonic honours of distinction conferred upon Bro . Hnghan waa his appointment to tho rank of Past Grand Senior Warden iu 1874 by tho Marquis of Ripon , then Most Worshipful

Grand Master of England , and that of Past Assistant Grand Sojourner in the Grand Chapter by H . B . H . tho Prince of Wales . Ho has likxwiso been made Past Grand Senior Warden of several foreign Grand Lodges . Ilia namo is on the rolls of scores of Lodges , Chapters , Conclaves , & -j ., throughout tho world , and in Scotland he is an honorary member of Mother Kilwinning ( 0 ) and Mary ' s

Chapel ( 1 ) . The 30 degrees , 31 degrees , and 32 degrees have been conferred upon him by the Supremo Council 33 degree , "because of his literary services to the Craft . " Very few of the many Lodge Histories havo been published dnring the last twenty years ( says Bro . Lake ) without Bro . Hughan's assist , ance and an introduction from his pen , while a great number of

works havo beeu dedicated to him , a few of the more important being—" Kenniug ' s ArchEuological Library , " Vol . I . ; Bro . George F . Fort ' s " Critical Inquiry into the Condition of the Conventional Buildings nnd their llelation to Secular Guilds in the Middle Ages ;" and Bro . John Lane ' s " Handy Book to tha Study of Lists of Lodge ? , " & o .

He was " Consulting Editor " iu the production of the latest " History of Freemasonry , " written by a Board of Editors , and published by the Fraternity Pnblishing Company , United States of America , and is the author of an exhaustive introduction in whioh the old Lodrjes of Scotlrind figure conspicuously . As an author Bro . Hughau bus bo ? n most prolific . Commencing

with the "Constitutions of tho Freemasons " in 1869 , and ending for tho present with thafc charmingly written " History of the Apollo Lodge , York , " and the Grand Lodge of all England , 1705-1805 ; 1 S 91 , tho interval has been filled by tho issue of ( i Masonic Sketches ancl KepriuA" " Old Charges of tho British Freemasons , " "
