ARMITAGE LODGE , No . 2261 . ON Thursday , 3 rd ult ., at Huddersfield , a most interesting event took place in connection with this Lodge , the occasion being a presentation to Bro . Crossland Hirst I . P . M . P . P . G . D ., who is held in very high esteem by the Brethren of the Lodge . With a view to testifying to that feeling in a permanent manner , the members decided to present to him an oil painting of himself , and Messrs . John E . Shaw and Son , who did the work , succeeded in producing a very faithful portrait of Bro . Hirst , who is depicted in his Provincial clothing .
_ Owing to ill-health , Bro . Hirst was unable to attend the Lodge , and a deputation waited on him at his house , Broomfield , Golcar . A short account of his Masonic career was read by Bro . J . E . Bottom , and complimentary speeches were made by Bros . Sam Hirst and James Crowther . The presentation was made by Bro . C . H . Crowther , who spoke of the great interest Bro . Hirst had always taken in Freemasonry , and of the instruction which he had imparted to his Brethren for many
years . Not only had he instructed them m the principles of Freemasonry , but he had exemplified them in his every-day life by making them the very rule and guide of all his actions , by practicing without the Lodge those precopts taught within it . Bro .. Hirst expressed his sincere thanks for the honour conferred upon him , and he asked his son , Bro . G . C . Hirst , to read his reply , which concluded by requesting them to accept the portrait as a gift from him to the Lodge .
The W . M . accepted it with thanks , and assured Bro . Hirst that it should be placed in the best position possible in the Lodge room . The deputation then retired , and the portrait was afterwards formally handed to the Lodge by the W . M .
DUKE OF YORK LODGE , No . 2449 . THE regular meeting was held at the Palatine Hotel , Manchester , on Thursday , 10 th ult ., Bro . T . T . Hardicker W . M . The principal business of the evening was that of balloting for and initiating Messrs . Wm .
Simpson , Manager , Droylsden ; and Wm . Greenhalgh , Tailor and Draper , Hollingwood . The W . M . performed the first ceremony , the latter being undertaken by Bro . Wm . Boden P . M . Bro . Robt . Meggitt J . W . presented and explained the Working Tools to the candidates , and also delivered the antient charge .
At the festive board which followed , the usual Loyal and Masonic toasts were pleasantly relieved by songs , & o . the services of several Brethren being brought into requisition . Bros . Boden P . M . and R . H . Whatham especially distinguished themselves , the former in his rendering of the Entered Apprentice Song , and the latter by a learned dissertation upon one of those hidden mysteries entirely unconnected with the science of Freemasonry .
The health of the W . M . was proposed by Bro . J . H . Crowther , in reply to which Bro . Hardicker thanked the Brethren for the cordial feeling displayed towards him , and congratulated the Lodge upon having acquired two members like Bros . Simpson and Greenhalgh . The toast of the Past Masters was in the competent hands of Bro . Clement J . Hall S . W ., and was duly responded to by Bro . Fred Warburton I . P . M ., and others .
DARING BURGLARY AT A MASONIC JEWELLERS . CHRISTMAS is always a busy time with ' burglars , and one of their exploits this year was on Christmas eve , when ihe premises of Messrs . Toye and Co ., Masonic Clothiers and Jewellers , 17 Clerkenwell Road , London , E . C , were broken into . The thieves managed to get clear away with an iron safe and various Masonic goods , but the booty they obtained does rot appear to have been of much use to them , as most of the stolen
property has since been found in the streets—of course considerably damaged—together with the safe , which has been rendered entirely useless . It seems incredible the property of Bro . Toye could have been so treated , as his premises aie in the midst of one of the most important centres of the jewellery trade , nearly the whole of the shops from St . John Street to Goswell Road being occupied by wholesale and retail jewellers . It often
appears difficult to imngino an ordinary robbery taking place without the thieves being discovered , but when an iron safe is removed and destroyed , in one of the busiest thoroughfares of the city , the surprise is increased . Bro . Toye naturally feels that the neighbourhood ought to be very much more frequented by the police than would appear to have been the case at the time of the robbery .
Avenue . —All tho scenery , properties , & c . for "A Man about Town " having been delivered on Thursday , a remarkably smooth dress rehearsal of the play took place that evening pending the public production which takes plaoe this ( Saturday ) evening , at 8 . 30 .
