Prior to this ceremony , the outgoing W . M . Bro . Beattie , vacated the ohair in order to allow Bro . Hirst to initiate Mr . W . Hasted of Mile End Road . This accomplished , tho necessary forms preliminary to the event of the evening wore observed .

Bro . Beattie installed Bro . Hirst in a very impressive manner , assisted by Bro . P . M . Wardell . There was not a large attendance , on account of the inclement weather , says tho " East London Observer . "

Tho Lodge being closed , the Brethren adjourned to the banquet . _ The usual toasts were honoured , and there was a presentation of a P . M . ' s jewel to Brother Beattie . There was an admirable musical programme , under the direction of Bro . Wm . Graves .

TRANQUILLITY LODGE , No . 185 . THE - installation meeting was held on Monday , 18 th ult ., when Brother Isaac Lazarus was installed into the chair , and regularly appointed the Assistant Officers . During the evening a Past Master ' s jewel was presented to Bro . Lewis Levy the Worshipful Master of the past year .

PANMURE LODGE , No . 715 . THE installation was celebrated on Saturday , 16 th ult ., under the presidency of Bro . Solomon Myers , who was presented with a Past Master ' s jewel on his retirement from the chair , in appreciation of the very able manner in which ho had conducted the affairs of the Lodge during his year of office .

The business of the evening included the raising of Bros . W . Stone and F . W . Theeman , the initiation of Mr . L . Knobel , and the installation of Bro . Edwin R . Spiers , the assembly taking place at the regular quarters of the Lodge , the Cannon Street Hotel . At the close of tho business the Brethren adjourned to a well-served banquet , at which the customary toasts were proposed and honoured .

In proposing the W . M ., the I . P . M . said that since he had Domed the Lodge Bro . Spiers had not only introduced many good Brethren , but had , both at the Lodge and at the social table , shown great interest and had displayed gifts of oratory and eloquence which had largely enhanced the pleasure and interest of the meetings ; and such had been the success of his career that the Brethren had welcomed with acclamation the opportunity of doing him honour by bestowing upon him the coveted office of W . approbation by that veteran Mason , Bro . T . J . Barnes , " the father " of tho Lodge ; another accomplished Mason , Bro . Jas . Smith P . M . acting with admirable smartness as D . C . The Board of Masters was formed at the appointed time , and the actual ceremony of placing Bro . W . Caslake in the chair of K . S . carried through with masterly effect amid the congratulations of a Board of eighteen Past Masters . On the Brethren being re-admitted the usual salutes were proceeded with , and Bro . T . J . Barnes delivered the customary charges with telling deliberation and effect .

Subsequently Bro . Moss was presented with a handsome P . M . ' s jewel , with the customary compliments of the Lodge . On the Lodge being closed , all adjourned to the banqueting hall , where an excellent repast was served . The speeches and toasts that followed were to the point .

The Installing Master was especially honoured by the W . M ., who regarded the present occasion as unique , Bro . Barnes being in his 86 th year . The toast was most heartily greeted , and Bro . Barnes said that though he had held that each retiring W . M . should instal his successor , there was a special reason for a divergence on this occasion . He had known the W . M . as a lad , long before he joined the Craft , and had always desired to have the pleasure

of installing him m the chair if he ( Brother Barnes ) lived until that opportunity offered . He was proud to have lived , and he would add a word to the younger members by way of urging thorn to qualify themselves for the duties of Freemasonry , and concluded by expressing the hope to see the Lodge as prosperous as it had ever been . The Initiate made a capital reply , a point being that what he had heard of Freemasonry was that by it a bad man was made good , and a good man made better .

The Past Masters wero duly honoured , and the I . P . M . having replied , Bro . Ayton P . M . in his response , feelingly alluded to the circumstance that just twenty years ago he was installed in the chair , and to him it was a redletter day to have the pleasure of initiating a son who was not born when he himself was initiated in the Lodge .

FRIARS LODGE , No . 1349 . THIS Lodge held its usual meeting On Monday , 18 th ult ., at the Ship and Turtle , Leadenhall Street , Bro . C . Eschwege W . M . The ballot having been unanimous in favour of Messrs . John Da Costa and John Mitchell , the W . M . very impressively initiated them . Bro . Causby

was passed to the degree of F . C . ; Bros . Astley , Lee , and Cooper raised , the beautiful ceremony making an evident impression on the candidates , says the ' East London Observer . " Bro . H . Marks P . M . initiated a discussion respecting the ball which is to take place at Cannon Street Hotel , and he incidentally mentioned that
