John's Festival be held on a Saturday ,

was carried , aud there being no further business , the Lodge was closed in peace and harmony . At tho social board tho health of Bros . Todd and Entwistle was proposed , drank and responded to , as was the health of the absent W . 1 I . and Treasnrer . Tho health of tho AV . When the Lodge had been lowered to the first degree the Secretary announced the receipt of a letter on behalf of Bro . H . R . H . tbe Princo cf Wales from Sir Dighton Probyn . The letter was in response to a telegram of condolenco to H . R . H . on his recent bereavement , and read as follows : —General Sir Dighton

B . to the Worshipful Master to receive at his hands the benefits of installation . In due course a strong Board of Installed Masters was opened , arid the new Mister regularly placed in the chair . On the re-admission

of the lay members Bro . Shurmur was formally proclaimed and saluted in the three degrees . The following brethren were then invested with their respective collars of office : Jas . Terry P . G . S . B , S . W ., W . Maple J . W ., Major Baker P . M . Treasurer , C . F . Hogard P . M . P . G . Standard Bearer Secretary , Herbert Sprake S . D ., Crick J . Stewards , and Morley Tyler . The addresses were admirably given by Bro . Hogard ; indeed the installation throughout was essentially a perfect one . Bro . T . J . Railing Prov . G . Secretary Essex filled the Junior Warden ' s chair . The new AV . M . was well to the fore in his remarks as to the duties each Officer would be expected to perform . The first business waa to present to tho I . P . M . the jewel he had so

worthily qualified himself to receive during the time he had filled the chair of tho Lodpe , and tho compliment paid him was gracefully acknowledged by Bro . Hogard , who assured the brethren his interest in the working of the Lodge would be enhanced by this kindly mark of their approval . After routine inquiries , Lodge was closed . The banquet was served by Messrs . Baker Brothers ( Limited ) in a most

recherche manner , and ample justice was done the good things provided . If wo were inclined to cavil we might urge that the service was somewhat slow , but here we might bo told our reason for saying so was our desire to obey the mandate of our medical adviser not to be ont late . Well , well , let it bo so . Bro . Shurmur , when he did address himself to the toasts did not lose time . In speaking of Her

Majesty , be referred to tho sympathetic feeling that existed between the Queen and her subjects in all parts of the world , as was practically evidenced by recent events . The same remarks would apply to the Most Worshipful tho Grand Master , who was a staunch supporter of Freemasonry . In speaking of the M . W . Pro Grand Master , the R . W . Deputv Grand Master , and the rest of the Grand Officers

Present and Past , the W . M . said no more zealous brethren could have been selected than Lord Lathom and the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe . Tbey had a strong array of Grand Officers with them that night : — Bro . Richard Eve Past Grand Treasurer , Bro . F . A . Philbrick Grand Registrar , Bro . Thomas Fenn President of the Bo » rd of General Purposes ; then there were also present Bros . T . J . Railing , J . Terry ,

C . F . Hogard , r . H . Miller , & e . He need not refer to their individual services , but would incidentally call attention to the interest Brother Philbrick took in the working of the Boys' School , and the time he had spent on its behalf . All the Grand Officers were popular , and tbe Craft thoroughly appreciated the excellent work thoy did .

After replies from Bros . Eve , Fenn and Philbrick , the health of the Worshipful Master was proposed by Bro . Hogard , and Bro . Shurmur acknowledged tho compliment . The other toasts were the Installing Mastor and the Past Masters ; tbe Visitors ; tho Masonic Charities ; thf Officers of the Lodge . The Tyler then gavo the parting toast , whioh brought au agreeable evening to a close .

The Lodge was opened at 6 o ' clock

and the inmates of the previous meeting read and confirmed . Bro . Opeushaw , being a candidate for the second degree , was interrogated as to his proficiency in the first , aud having satisfactorily answered , withdrew . He was afterwards passed to the degree of

Fellow Craft by the W . M ., aud there being no further bnsiness the Lodge was closed in peace and harmony . A capital entertainment was contributed impromptu at the social board , several members of tho famous Minstrel Troupe creating intense enjoyment with their performances .

A perfect knowledge of the ritual does not make its possessor an expert Mason ; he may be what was known iu olden times as a parrot Mason . It requires study , hard and deep , to get au understanding of the science . After work in Masonry for overy thirtytwo years we find ourselves just gaining a knowledge of its

rudiments . Wo havo seen brethren white with ago aud old in Masonio years wbo were constant searchers after Masonic light . Yet the problem is plain , and is embraced in grand ideas and lessons , dating far prior to the birth of Him who ipoke as no man ever spake , whona teachings while on earth were : " Do unto other * as you would that

they should do unto you , " and "Lore one another ; " aud his counsel was that "He who is without sin let him cast the first stone . " Sublime teaching indeed ! It is easier for man to preach than to practice these tenets . He who can master them is indeed a perfect Fi eemason . —Keystone .

r reetnnsor . s will bo interested to learn that two members of the Craft in Great Britain -aro centenarians—one in Scotland and the other in England . Mr . William Liddle , of Dunbar , recently attained tho age of 102 years . The old gentleman is in remarkable health , his seeing and hearing powers being as good as ever , and his memory ,

though a little at faulo as regards recent , events , is very retentive respecting thc past . He is a brother of Dunbar Castle Lodge , 75 , tho members of which entertained bim to a banqnet two years ago , on tho occasion of his attaining the ago of 100 . Mr . William Salmon reached the age of 102 years ou Wednesday , the 16 th ultimo .

Present and Past , the W . M . said no more zealous brethren could have been selected than Lord Lathom and the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe . Tbey had a strong array of Grand Officers with them that night : — Bro . Richard Eve Past Grand Treasurer , Bro . F . A . Philbrick Grand Registrar , Bro . Thomas Fenn President of the Bo » rd of General Purposes ; then there were also present Bros . T . J . Railing , J . Terry ,

C . F . Hogard , r . H . Miller , & e . He need not refer to their individual services , but would incidentally call attention to the interest Brother Philbrick took in the working of the Boys' School , and the time he had spent on its behalf . All the Grand Officers were popular , and tbe Craft thoroughly appreciated the excellent work thoy did .

After replies from Bros . Eve , Fenn and Philbrick , the health of the Worshipful Master was proposed by Bro . Hogard , and Bro . Shurmur acknowledged tho compliment . The other toasts were the Installing Mastor and the Past Masters ; tbe Visitors ; tho Masonic Charities ; thf Officers of the Lodge . The Tyler then gavo the parting toast , whioh brought au agreeable evening to a close .

A REGULAR meeting took place at tho Victoria Hotel , on Mondav , 28 th March . Present—Bro * . Seth Wrigley W . M ., Wollaston S . VV ., Brabner J . W ., Fred . Hilton Secretary , Bitever S . D ., Ward J . D ., Edwin Smith Organist , Mahon Steward , Lloyd , Openshaw , Law , Schofield , Luke and Birlow . Visitors—Bros . Mxckay Secretary 2231 , ai . d Stevens W . M . 999 . The Lodge was opened at 6 o ' clock

and the inmates of the previous meeting read and confirmed . Bro . Opeushaw , being a candidate for the second degree , was interrogated as to his proficiency in the first , aud having satisfactorily answered , withdrew . He was afterwards passed to the degree of

Fellow Craft by the W . M ., aud there being no further bnsiness the Lodge was closed in peace and harmony . A capital entertainment was contributed impromptu at the social board , several members of tho famous Minstrel Troupe creating intense enjoyment with their performances .

A perfect knowledge of the ritual does not make its possessor an expert Mason ; he may be what was known iu olden times as a parrot Mason . It requires study , hard and deep , to get au understanding of the science . After work in Masonry for overy thirtytwo years we find ourselves just gaining a knowledge of its

rudiments . Wo havo seen brethren white with ago aud old in Masonio years wbo were constant searchers after Masonic light . Yet the problem is plain , and is embraced in grand ideas and lessons , dating far prior to the birth of Him who ipoke as no man ever spake , whona teachings while on earth were : " Do unto other * as you would that

they should do unto you , " and "Lore one another ; " aud his counsel was that "He who is without sin let him cast the first stone . " Sublime teaching indeed ! It is easier for man to preach than to practice these tenets . He who can master them is indeed a perfect Fi eemason . —Keystone .

r reetnnsor . s will bo interested to learn that two members of the Craft in Great Britain -aro centenarians—one in Scotland and the other in England . Mr . William Liddle , of Dunbar , recently attained tho age of 102 years . The old gentleman is in remarkable health , his seeing and hearing powers being as good as ever , and his memory ,

though a little at faulo as regards recent , events , is very retentive respecting thc past . He is a brother of Dunbar Castle Lodge , 75 , tho members of which entertained bim to a banqnet two years ago , on tho occasion of his attaining the ago of 100 . Mr . William Salmon reached the age of 102 years ou Wednesday , the 16 th ultimo .
