MELLOR LODGE , No . 1774 . AN emergency meeting was held at the Railway Hotel , Fairfield , near Ashton-under Lyne , on Tuesday , 22 nd ult ., Bro . Joseph Leech P . M . P . P . G . Tr . Worshipful Master . The business which called the Brethren together was that of passing Bros . Henry Butcher , D . J . H . Nield , and John Gomersall to the degree of

F . C ., the ceremonial being undertaken by Bros . James Glennie P . M . P . P . G . S . B ., and J . P . Thomson P . M . Secretary . The working tools were presented and explained by Bro . G . E . Mackereth J . W ., in an exceedingly careful and efficient manner , for which he was congratulated at the festive board which succeeded Lodge business .

The Loyal and Masonic toasts were interspersed with songs , recitations , etc ., contributed by Bros . Mackereth , Thomson , Gomersall , Win . Smith Organist , and Edward Roberts P . M . 1459 . The toast of the W . M . was proposed by Bro . Glennie , who said of Bro . Leech that he deserved all their encouragement , and all their praise . He was not only the oldest Past Master in the neighbourhood of Ashton , but he

was also the oldest member of the Mellor Lodge , and its first P . M . His reelection to the chair of K . S . was a great honour to tbe members , as he brought to the position an undoubted amount of experience , which would always keep the Brethren in order . His attendance and strict punctuality , both at the Lodge and the meetings for instruction , were something to be proud of and envied , and Bro . Glennie advised the members to emulate his good example in this respect .

Bro : Leech W . M . responded , saying that during his lifetime he had had many matters to respond to , but no previous occasion had caused him so much difficulty as this , for Bro . Glennie had said so much about him which was of a favourable character . He however believed that the expressions had come from the bottom of his heart , and he thanked him sincerely . His earnest desire was to be constant in his attendance , for he might assure them that if ever he had spent a happy moment in his life it was in connection with

Lodge Mellor . The Brethren had always been so harmonious in every way , and one could not think otherwise than that it was a pleasure to be in good company . A true Mason should have been one in heart before he joined the Order , and the principles of the Craft were such as to promote harmony and create good men . He thanked the Brethren for the enthusiastic manner in which they had received his name , coupled as it was with the toast so ably put by Bro . Glennie .

Bro . Leech then proposed the health of the Past Masters , which included not only those who were present that evening , but also those who , from various causes , were absent , and in this sense were a distinct loss to the festive board , which they were in every way able to grace . His own business was a large and increasing one , and really prevented him taking so active a part in Lodge matters as formerly , yet he would continue to have their interests at heart , and do whatever he could .

It may be explained that Bro . Leech is considered to bo the oldest auctioneer in the kingdom , he having held fifty annual licenses , a unique record in this direction . Other toasts followed , notably that of the newly-passed Brethren , who responded . Besides those already mentioned , there were present Bros . T . B . Rimmington P . M . Treasurer acting S . W ., A . Bagshawe J . D ., W . C . Flint ( host ) , C . A . Easthope , J . B . Holt , Thos . Spencer , and others . Visitor : Bro . Peter Wills P . P . G . A . D . C . P . M . Minerva Lodge , No . 300 .

ALBERT VICTOR LODGE , No . 1773 . THE regular meeting was held at the Town Hall , Pendloton , on Friday , 18 th ult ., Bro . Wm . Lambert Worshipful Master , the principal business of the evening being that of balloting for and initiating Mr , James Massey , Physician and Surgeon , Pendleton . The ceremony was undertaken by the W . M ., whilst Bro . W . A . Smith J . W . presented and explained the working tools , tho ancient charge being rendered by Bro . W . Thos . Blease S . W .

At the festive board which followed , Loyal and Masonic coasts were varied by songs , recitations , & c , contributed by Bros . John Harwood J . D ., John Horrocks Organist , James Hart , F . Daniels , and Edward Roberts

P . M . 1459 . The Visitors were Bros . Thos . F . Atkinson , St . John , 153 ( U . S . A . ) , and William Finlay 1459 and 1219 .
