Masons from evpry part of the Province . No better proof of the esteem in which Bro . Tew is held conld have been given than by the crowded assembly which witnessed the imposing ceremony in which he was the chief figure . As soon as Sir Henry Edwards , of Halifax , was compelled to resign this exalted and honourable position , on
— : o : — INSTALLATION OF THE PROVINCIAL GRAND MASTER .
THE installation of Bro . Thomas W . Tew , of Carleton Grange , Pontefract , as Provinoial Grand Master of West Yorkshire , was the most successful Masonio function which has taken place in Leeds since the installation of the Marquess of Eipon . An event of snch importance and interest drew to the town on Friday , the 24 th nit .,
account of ill-health , the Masons throughont West Yorkshire felt that in the hands of Bro . Tew the interests of the Craft would be as safe as they had been nnder the care of his respected predecessor , and the announcement that His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales , as Grand Master of England , had nominated Bro . Tew to this position
was therefi re received with gratification by the Craft generally . The ceremony of installation , which was performed by tbe Earl of Lathom , Deputy Grand Master of England , took place in the Albert Hall , which had been suitably furnished from the Philanthropic
Lodge . Tbe brethren bectan to assemble before eleven o ' clock , and at the opening there conld not have been fewer than 1800 Masons present . The effect was very beautifnl , as the Provincial Grand Lodge , in their gorgeous insignia of pnrple and gold , marched up the Hall to the dais at the eastern end of tho Hall . The arrival of the
procession was announced by a flourish of bugles , and as they took places Bro . Dr . Spark P . P . G . O . performed suitable music . Among the distinguished brethren assembled to do honour to the occasion were : — -Bros , the Very Rev . A . P . Purey-Cust Dean of York and Provinoial Grand Chaplain , Baron de Ferrieres , M . Lodge had taken up its position the scene was a most animated and beautiful one . The rich clothing worn by many of the brethren contrasted pleasingly with the prevailing light blue ; whilst the red upholstery of tho Hall seemed to bring ont into still greater relief the beantifnl blending of the colours . The Earl of Lathom
took his seat , and Lodge was opened in duo form . After prayer from the Rev . Cannn Bullock , P . G . C ., and a reading from tbe Scriptures by the Rev . W . T . M . Sylvester P . G . C ., the Depnty Grand Mnsler and tho Provincial Grand Master were saluted in ancient form , this ceremony being most imposing . The roll was
called , and it was shown that all the 69 Lodges in the Province were represented . The Provincial Grand Registrar then read the following address : — To the Right Hon . the Earl of Lathom , R . W . Deputy Grand Master of England and R . W . Provincial Grand Master of West
Lancashire . —The congratulatory , dutiful , and affectionate address of welcome of the 69 Lodges of Ancient , Free , and Accepted Masons of the Province of West Yorkshire , assembled in the Albert Hall , Leeds , on Friday , April 24 th , 5885 , at the installation of R . W . Brother T . W . Tew , J . P ., P . Grand Deacon of England , and P . Deputy Provincial
Grand Master , offer to you a most cordial welcome and the assurance of their loyal devotion to the Grand Lodge of England , which sentiment has ever animated tbe Masons in this Province . They also offer to you their warmest thanks for the compliment you have paid them in coming to perform this important Masonic ceremony ,
affording them an opportunity of acknowledging their appreciation of your devoted and distinguished services to the Craft for a long series of years . They desire to express their satisfaction that the ceremony has also been graced by the presence of yonr excellent neighbour and friend Colonel Le Gendre N . Starkie , D . L ., P . Grand Warden of
England , R . W . Provincial Grand Master of East Lancashire , who will take part in the proceedings of the day . Their pleasure is further augmented by tbe pves'nce of W . Brother Dr . J . York , Past Grand Deacon of England , and by patent of the Most Worshipful Grand Master His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales , K . G ., dated the 10 th day of January , A . L . 5885 , the Provinoial Grand Master Designate of the Province of West Yorkshire , who was initiated into Masonry ou the 2 nd day of October , A . L . 5856 , in
the Scarsdale Lodge , No . 981 , now 681 , at Chesterfield , in the Connty of Derby , and on the 7 th of April , A . L . 5862 , became Worshipful Master of the St . Senior Warden of this Province , April 5 th , A . L . 5865 , Depnty Provincial Grand Master on the 21 st of A . L . 5875 , has been duly installed and now is the Right Worshipful Provinoial Grand Master of the Ancient , Free , and Accepted Masons of the Province of West Yorkshire in succession to Colonel Sir Henry Edwards , Bart ., C . B .
and D . L ., tbe last Right Worshipful Provinoial Grand Master . I , therefore , by virtue of my offioe as the Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies in this Provinoial Grand Lodge , and in accordance with tbe ancient usage and established custom , do call upon all the brethren here present in this Albert Hall , in this town
of Leeds , to salute the Right Worshipful the Provinoial Grand Master , according to ancient form ; and may the Great Architect of the Universe guide , direot , and prosper him in all His ways . The requisite salute was then given with much heartiness and effect .
Colonel Starkie , on behalf of East Lancashire , congratulated the newly installed Provinoial Grand Master upon tbe exalted position he had attained in the Masonic body . The manner in wbioh Brother Tew had hitherto discharged the duties which had devolved upon him were sufficient to prove that the larger duties would be equally well
performed , and West Yorkshire had reason to be congr-atulated upon the appointment just made . He expressed the hope of the Freemasons of Lancashire when he wished the Provincial Grand Master might have a long and prosperous rule . His reign was sure to be distingnished by courteous acts and jndioious principles , by which the
prosperity and stability of the Order would be maintained . Might that great Province of West Yorkshire , under his genial rule , flourish , and prosper ! Bro . Tew was sure to maintain with ability and zeal the traditions of the Order , and so gain the respect of all . Might the white rose of Yorkshire , as emblematical of Freemasonry , shed its
fragrance and rival the red rose of Lancashire , that both might be united in the garden of Freemasonry to spread abroad the fragrance of that flower to the benefit of Freemasonry in general ! Dr . Bell also conveyed the felicitations of North and East Yorkshire , and presented an address signed by the Earl of Zetland .
Dr . Taylor , of Scarborough , presented an address from the Freemasons of Scarborough and Filey , and Sir Frederick Milner , Bart , M . P ., presented an address from York . These various marks of distinction were suitably acknowledged by Bro . Tew , and the brethren present cheered again and again .
Bro . Tew then rose to address the meeting , being received with cheering loud and long continued . He said they had met together on no ordinary occasion to the Craft , and for no ordinary Masonic purpose , which was fraught with interest to the Freemasons of the Province of West Yorkshire . The circumstances which had assembled
together so numerous and so influential a body of the Brotherhood from all parts of England must be regarded as of the utmost significance to the Order of which they were all proud to belong . In obedience to the laws of the Craft , with the sanction of the Most Worshipful the Grand Master and the acquiescence of the Grand
Lodge of England , their duty was to place a Provincial Grand Master in the chair of the Provincial Grand Lodge vacated by their beloved and late gallant commander-in-chief , Colonel Sir Henry Edwards , C . B . Their first dnty was to render a tribute of respect to that hououred Baronet , who had clone so much for the County of York , and
who had retired from active service in the Craft only through inadequate health . Might the Almighty grant him perfect recovery from his indisposition , and that some day they might again greet him in that Provincial Grand Lodge was the sincere hope of all . He then went on cordially to acknowledge the presence of the Earl of
Lathom , Dr . Bell , the D . P . G . M . of North and East Yorkshire , and other distinguished guests -whose presence had lent dclat to the scene . In tbe presence of the Very Rev . tbe Dean of York , the Provincial Grand Chaplains Present and Past , and the Chaplains of the various Lodges , they were proud that Freemasonry had that opportunity of
showing its attachment , not only to their sacred offices , but as the symbolisation of their devotion to the Volume of tbe Sacred Law which ruled and governed the Craft , and their belief in the principles of the Christian faith , whilst their attendance at the Leeds Parish Church would cement that sentiment of feeling which so fervently
