night to the high position he had long been hoping for , and he was proud to know he had worked his way up from the junior Offices , whether by merit or ability he would not say . All he could promise was that he would do his best to g ive them the satisfaction they looked for .

Bro . Lewarnc J . W . also returned thanks , on behalf of himself and his brother Officers . He was proud of being one of the principals of the Lodge , and pleased to hear the flattering remarks of the W . M . and the kind utterances of the Visitors concerning the work of the Officers .

During the evening the Charity Box was sent round , on behalf of the South African Fund , the result being that £ 3 15 s 6 d was collected , making a total of fy os 6 d from the members on this occasion . Bros . Lewis , Mussell , and several others contributed to the harmony of the evening , giving some good songs , & c , while the obli ging hostess , Mrs . Beltramo , assisted in the entertainment , by accompanying some of the singers at the piano in excellent foz-m .

M . of the Mother Lodge , and we were pleased to hear the ritual of Freemasonry well rendered . The Lodge was opened by the W . M . punctually at eight o'clock , with

Bro . Craggs Sec , and Bro . Hinds Treas . were congratulated on their balance sheet , it showing a good balance in hand after supporting all the Masonic Charities during the past year .

The . ceremony of initiation was rehearsed , Bro . Binfield acting as candidate . This being ended the Lodge was called off and on . Bro . Cawley assumed the chair , and rehearsed the inner working of installation , Bro . Dyer being- presented as W . M .-elect , while Bro . Hatt Treasurer made an •excellent Director of Ceremonies . The W . M .-elect having taken the obligation was initiated ' and saluted , and proceeded to invest the Officers , after which Bro . Cawley delivered the three addresses , his work being highly appreciated .

Bro . M . Davis P . M . and Secretary of the Thomas-a-Becket Lodge was elected W . M . for the next meeting . Bro . Cawley thanked Bro . Howard for his great kindness in having vacated the chair for him . They were aware he was anxious to work the installation very shortly .

CITY OF LONDON LODGE , No . 601 . KNOWING by experience the excellent working in the Mother Lodge , we looked forward with considerable gratification to visit the Instruction Lodge—which holds its meeting every Tuesday evening , at 6 . 30 , at Bro . D . E . Sbingks , the King ' s Arms , High Street , Shored itch—as we did on the 22 nd ult .

We were agreeably surprised with the comfortable accommodation that is provided for the meetings , also it was a great pleasure to see our worthy Bro . W . H . Haylock jun . W . M . of the Mother Lodge in the chair , with Bros . * J . Jeffries S . W ., W . Reeves J . W ., W . R . Haylock sen . P . M . Secretary of the Mother Lodge Prec , H . P . Hill acting Secretary , W . announced his intention of rehearsing the ceremony of raising , for which Bro . Wynman was accepted as candidate . After the formalities the Lodge was advanced , and the ceremony was gone through in a very creditable manner . The Lodge was resumed to the first degree and the W . M . kindly vacated the chair in favour of Bro . A . E . Purkis , who rehearsed the ceremony o £ initiation , Bro . Grant the S . D . acting as candidate , whilst Bro . Wynman officiated as Junior Deacon .

This ceremony was rendered in a faultless manner and highly appreciated by the Brethren . Bro . J . Jeffries was elected W . M . for the next Tuesday . Brethren of the district seeking Masonic knowledge can hardly do better than pay the Lodge

a visit , the capacity of Bro . W . R . Haylock P . M . as Preceptor being widely known ; and we are convinced he will do everything in his power to impart correct knowledge of the ritual to any Brother who places himself under his instruction , while Brethren may rest assured that they will receive a most hearty welcome . The W . M rehearsed the ceremony of passing , Bro . Pealing acting as candidate . That ceremony being ended tho W . M . proposed to rehearse a raising , for which Bro . W . H . Haylock kindly offered himself as the candidate . Having answered the questions lie was entrusted . The Lodge was opened in the third degree , and the ceremony was perfectly rendered .

Bro . James Pealing 79 was elected a member , which compliment was duly acknowledged . Bro . A . E . Purkis was elected W . M . for the next meeting .

ROYAL SAVOY LODGE , No . 1744 . WE paid a visit on Monday , 7 th ult ., to this well known Lodge of Instruction , as the members had kindly invited those of the Hammersmith Lodge of Instruction to pay them a return visit , and the spacious meeting room at the Earl Russell , St . Pancras Road , was simply packed ; indeed . we could not find out the names of many who were present .

The chair was taken punctually to time by that veteran Preceptor Bro . Arthur Williams P . M . 834 and 2090 , and he was supported by the following Officers : Bros . F . Cave S . W ., Lewis Bcale J . W ., W . Hillier P . M . I . P . M ., J . Adcock Treas ., A . George Sec , H . Warren S . D ., W . G . Oavo J . D ., H . A . Barnett I . G . After the Lodge was opened in the first and third degrees it

was resumed to the second , and Bro . Bratt was examined and entrusted , after which the Lodge was resumed to the third degree and the raising ceremony gone through . Lodge was resumed to the first degree and called off and on , after which the initiation ceremony was rehearsed , Bro . G . W . Turner taking the candidate ' s place .

At the second rising it was proposed by Bro . A . George that a vote of ' thanks be given to the Hammersmith . Lodge of Instruction , for sending so many of their members ; and Bro . Stephens , in seconding , laid great stress on the immense amount of good these Lodge visits did , not only in increasing the members , but giving the Brethren the means of extending the circle of

their Masonic acquaintances , comparing the different working of the ritual as expounded by rival Preceptors , and noticing slight differences . Bro . Hancock , who acts as Preceptor in several Lodges of Instruction in the north of London , supported , and hoped that he might be present at the next visit . He complimented Bro . W . Hillier Preceptor for arranging the event .

In replying to the Visitors toast Bro . A . Williams and Bro . Scolding thanked the Royal Savoy for their "Right Royal " welcome , and stated they looked forward with anticipation to receiving another invitation . Wo cannot allow the opportunity to pass without complimenting the Stewards for the extreme courtesy and kindness they extended to the large number of visiting Brethren present .

A CALL FROM LABOUR . rpHE column of Junior Warden was kept perpendicular toi ! a number' of JL Brethren , including the Grand Secretary of England—and others—who accepted the invitation of the Great Western Railway Company 011 Tuesday , and took part in the inaugural excursion m connection with the now combined

Railway and River Trips to the Upper Thames which have been arranged by that enterprising Railway Company , in conjunction with the famous old establishment , the Bed Lion , at Hculey-on-Tliamo * , whero Bro . C . Tod Pollen is now installed as Manager , with Bro . Harris , Managing Director of the Hotel Company , as a most efficient chief .

The arrangements in connection with the trips , 01 which Tuesday saw the inauguration , include the journey from Paddingfcon in first-class saloon carriages attached to the 10 a . m , express , which reaches Henley-on-Thames without stopping at 10 . 50 a . m . ; a trip up or down the river , according to arrangements for different days -, luncheon on board the launch at 1 p . m ., and dinner at the Red Lion Hotel , Henley , on return from the river trip , at 7 p . m . ; the up train leaving Henley on Fridays , Saturdays and Mondays at 0 . 16 , and on Sundays at 9 p . m ., and arriving at Paddington at 10 . 7 or 9 . 52 p . m ,

After the Lodge was opened in the first and third degrees it

was resumed to the second , and Bro . Bratt was examined and entrusted , after which the Lodge was resumed to the third degree and the raising ceremony gone through . Lodge was resumed to the first degree and called off and on , after which the initiation ceremony was rehearsed , Bro . G . W . Turner taking the candidate ' s place .

At the second rising it was proposed by Bro . A . George that a vote of ' thanks be given to the Hammersmith . Lodge of Instruction , for sending so many of their members ; and Bro . Stephens , in seconding , laid great stress on the immense amount of good these Lodge visits did , not only in increasing the members , but giving the Brethren the means of extending the circle of

their Masonic acquaintances , comparing the different working of the ritual as expounded by rival Preceptors , and noticing slight differences . Bro . Hancock , who acts as Preceptor in several Lodges of Instruction in the north of London , supported , and hoped that he might be present at the next visit . He complimented Bro . W . Hillier Preceptor for arranging the event .

In replying to the Visitors toast Bro . A . Williams and Bro . Scolding thanked the Royal Savoy for their "Right Royal " welcome , and stated they looked forward with anticipation to receiving another invitation . Wo cannot allow the opportunity to pass without complimenting the Stewards for the extreme courtesy and kindness they extended to the large number of visiting Brethren present .

After the Lodge had been opened Bro . Jeffries offered himself as a candidate for initiation and that ceremony was gone through . The Lodge was called off and on . The Brethren then worked the second section of the first lecture under Bro . Williams ' s direction , and Bro . Walsh was highly complimented on his rendering of the ritual in the Lodge of Instruction for t . hfl first time . .

Railway and River Trips to the Upper Thames which have been arranged by that enterprising Railway Company , in conjunction with the famous old establishment , the Bed Lion , at Hculey-on-Tliamo * , whero Bro . C . Tod Pollen is now installed as Manager , with Bro . Harris , Managing Director of the Hotel Company , as a most efficient chief .

The arrangements in connection with the trips , 01 which Tuesday saw the inauguration , include the journey from Paddingfcon in first-class saloon carriages attached to the 10 a . m , express , which reaches Henley-on-Thames without stopping at 10 . 50 a . m . ; a trip up or down the river , according to arrangements for different days -, luncheon on board the launch at 1 p . m ., and dinner at the Red Lion Hotel , Henley , on return from the river trip , at 7 p . m . ; the up train leaving Henley on Fridays , Saturdays and Mondays at 0 . 16 , and on Sundays at 9 p . m ., and arriving at Paddington at 10 . 7 or 9 . 52 p . m ,
