The toast of the Past Masters and Installing Officer was next given , and in submitting ifc , the W . M . congratulated the Lodge ou tho number of P . M . ' s it contained . Personally , ho was exceedingly gratified that Bro . Beasley had postponed a visit to tho conntry in order to be present . Bro . Kasnor , than whom no wiser , more zealous , or

active brother existed , had done good service as Treasurer ancl Installing Officer . Bro . Burr , as Secretary , had also done valuable work , and no books or accounts could bo better kept or in better order than the books of this Lodge . Bro . Acworth , also an initiate of this Lodge , could be heartily congratulated npon the honours ho had

attained , as no brother had worked harder or deserved them better . And whether it was in Kent or Essex , or the Barnato Lodgo , or , in fact , any Lodge , their Bro . Treasurer could not be received with greater heartinegg or be held in higher esteem and respect than in the West Middlesex . Bro . Wright was the right man in tho right

place ; the excellency and carefulness of hia working as an Officer and Master all must ** c-knowledge . Last , but not least thero was thoir I . P . M . Bro . 1 ' ortor , who had now completed a most successful year . Whether in Lodge of Instruction or in Lodge itself , his work was always ably and carefully rendered . As ono who had worked np

with Bro . Portor to the chair , it afforded him ( Bro . Coop ) the greatest possible pleasure to present him , on behalf of the Lodge , with a Past Master ' s jewel , as a token ofthe esteem and friendship felt by every member . Might Bro . Porter be spared many years to wear fcho jewel of the West Middlesex Lodge with pleasure to himself and

gratification to all its members . Bro . E . C . Porter Immediate Past Master responded , and thanked the brethreu for the manner in which the toast had been received . It was most gratifying to him to know thafc he had discharged the duties of the office with satisfaction to the Lodge . He took that opportunity of thanking the Officers for the

able assistance they had rendered him . He shonld always value the handsome jewel presented thafc night as a mark of the esteem of many friends , and he trusted he might be spared for many years to wear it and to be useful to the Lodge , whose interests he should always have at heart . Bros . Beasley , Kasner , Wright , Fisher ,

Acworth , aud Burr also responded in suitable terms . In proposing the Initiates the W . M . remarked that they had that evening enrolled two excellent initiates , who , he trnsted , would eventually succeed to the distinguished position of W . M . Both brethren suitably replied . The W . M . expressed their pleasure that they had with them a goodly

number of visitors , to all of whom he extended a cordial welcome . Ho coupled with this toasfc the names of Bros . Jessop , W . H . Wills , J . J . Thomas and Alex . Jones . The Treasnrer and Secretary was the next toast . In response , Bro . Acworth thanked the Lodge for trusting him with the onerous duty of taking care of their funds , and

said so long as he occupied the position assigned to him he hoped to give satisfaction , and to retain the confidence and respect of the brethren . Brother Burr also replied , and observed that so long as tho brethren appreciated his efforts he shonld take great pleasure in the discharge of tho duties devolving upon him . In complimenting

the Officers of the Lodgo , the W . M . remarked thafc without the support of good Officers ho conld not satisfactorily carry on hia dnties . Bros . Wells , Pooley , Bellerby , E . T . Brown , Cunningham , Fryers ,

ON Thursday , the 24 th ult ., the membera of thia Lodge gave a ball afc the Town Hall , Stratford , in aid of the West Ham Hospital , at which about 200 ladies and gentlemen were present . The arrangements were under fche control of a committee , of which Bro . W . G . Norman waa the Hon . Secretary , and ifc ia due fco the care and attention of the committee that the ball waa ao eminently

this Lodgo of Instruction were resumed at the Manchester Hotel , Aldersgate-street , E . C , on the 29 th ult ., Bro . Emanuel P . M . 205 waa in the chair . The firsfc and second aeotiona of the first lectnre wore worked , also the ceremony of initiation , Bro . Marks acting as candidate .

Doric Lodge of Instruction , No . 933 . —A meeting was

held on the 28 th ult ., at the White Horse , White Horse-lane , Mile End-road , E . Present—B . Da Costa Preceptor , C N . Fox W . M ., L . A . Da Costa S . W ., B . Franks J . W ., W . Musto Secretary , N . Isaacs S . D ., H . Harris J . D ., J . Abrahams I . G . ; P . M . ' s Bros . W . Richardson , W . Musto , W . Myers , H . Marks , J . Shoesmith •also a number of

other brethren . Lodge was opened in duo form and the minutes of last meeting read and confirmed . Bro . Corper offered himself aa a candidate and was asked the usual questions . Lodgo was opened in

the third degree , aud the W . M . rehearsed the ceremony of raising . Lodge was closed in the third and second degrees , and Bro . L . A . Da Costa was elected W . M . for the ensuing week . After routine business Lodge was closed and adjourned until the following Monday evening .

Nineteenth Century Art Society . —For general quality , this exhibition is above fche average . Tho landscapes aro , of course , to the foro , and the one occupying tho post of honour , "TheFirst Snow on Loch-na-Gar , " by S . J . Barnes , of Birmingham ( 131 ) , ia a powerful work , the glinting rays through tbe broken clouds and the brown heather are charmingly done . " Eton College" ( 100 ) , by

Mr . Robert , Gallon is a conscientious work , and Mr Henry Cheadlo ' s " Tho Severn , near Bewdley , " ( 212 ) is an admirable gem . " Harvest Time , near Billingshurst , Sussex , " ( 228 ) , is a clever piece of corn painting ; the sky is not so good ; and " On a Pass ' fcwixfc Lake and Wood" { 61 ) , by Hamilton Marr , A . R . C . A ., is a fin eatmospheric study .

Amongst tho sea pictures , " A Preezy Afternoon , " ( 270 ) , by Frederick Jumes Aldridge , is to be commended for its capitally painted aea and good drawing of tho vessels , and "Mussel Gathering , " ( 54 ) , by G . A . Williams , is a fine rugged bit of work . Mr . A . Leicester Burroughs , a rising yonng portrait painter , sends only a small work , of a very

picturesque "Village Smithy ( 93 ) which ia quite a little Dutch pictnre , in tho stylo of fcho old masters , for its breadth and detail from tho anvil to the smallest misty nail . Of animal pictures thero aro several very pretty and humorous ones , and the flower pictures aro good , but the best is "Unity is strength " ( 80 ) , by J . Fitz-Marshall

—a very pretty conceit and highly finished . * it consists of a bronze vase , containing roses , thistle and shamrock—standing on a union jack Our space will not permit us to note tho principal contents of tho

water colour room , which are well worth inspection , but those of Mr Edward Jennings ( 301 ) "Corner of Wych Street , Drury Lane , " ancl Mr . James Loxham Browne ( 302 ) " Glen Almond , Perthshire , " deserve special attention ,

In order to meet the convenieuco of a large number of patrons resident in tlio suburbs , ( and by special desiro ) , tho management of the Alhambra has arranged to alter the times of performance of tho two ballet ? . Accordingly , on and after Monday , tho 4 th instant , " Our Army and Navy" ballet will commence at 8 * 30 o'clock , aud " Astrcii " will bo presented at 10 * 20 .

The Wednesday matinees of " Sweet Lavender , " at Terry ' s , aro so successful that thoy will bo continued in addition to tho usual Saturday ones throughout the year . Thi-3 will mako eight performances per week .

Tho landscapes aro , of course , to the foro , and the one occupying tho post of honour , "TheFirst Snow on Loch-na-Gar , " by S . J . Barnes , of Birmingham ( 131 ) , ia a powerful work , the glinting rays through tbe broken clouds and the brown heather are charmingly done . " Eton College" ( 100 ) , by

Mr . Robert , Gallon is a conscientious work , and Mr Henry Cheadlo ' s " Tho Severn , near Bewdley , " ( 212 ) is an admirable gem . " Harvest Time , near Billingshurst , Sussex , " ( 228 ) , is a clever piece of corn painting ; the sky is not so good ; and " On a Pass ' fcwixfc Lake and Wood" { 61 ) , by Hamilton Marr , A . R . C . A ., is a fin eatmospheric study .

Amongst tho sea pictures , " A Preezy Afternoon , " ( 270 ) , by Frederick Jumes Aldridge , is to be commended for its capitally painted aea and good drawing of tho vessels , and "Mussel Gathering , " ( 54 ) , by G . A . Williams , is a fine rugged bit of work . Mr . A . Leicester Burroughs , a rising yonng portrait painter , sends only a small work , of a very

picturesque "Village Smithy ( 93 ) which ia quite a little Dutch pictnre , in tho stylo of fcho old masters , for its breadth and detail from tho anvil to the smallest misty nail . Of animal pictures thero aro several very pretty and humorous ones , and the flower pictures aro good , but the best is "Unity is strength " ( 80 ) , by J . Fitz-Marshall

In order to meet the convenieuco of a large number of patrons resident in tlio suburbs , ( and by special desiro ) , tho management of the Alhambra has arranged to alter the times of performance of tho two ballet ? . Accordingly , on and after Monday , tho 4 th instant , " Our Army and Navy" ballet will commence at 8 * 30 o'clock , aud " Astrcii " will bo presented at 10 * 20 .
