illness . Ho was then summoned to attend the nest meeting , and again failing to appear , a peremptory summons was issned , with whioh he also failed to comply or to give a sufficient reason for noncompliance . It Was therefore resolved : — " That the Brother be BUB . pended from all Masonic functions and privileges for contumacy
nnder the powers of Rule 274 of tho Book of Constitutions . " The Board beg to report that the following Lodges have failed to make returns for many years , notwithstanding repeated applications : — No .

Tho Board reported to Grand Lodge in June last that a Sub-Committee had been appointed in tbe previous year to inquire into the working of the Grand Secretary ' s office , and arising out of this Report certain recommendations of the Board were then adopted . The labours of the Sub-Committee hare now been completed , and
United Grand Lodge.
their final Report , as follows , has been made to and adopted by the Board : — " We hare considered the remuneration of the various members of tbe staff and officials , nnd are of opinion that a revision shoal'l
take place . We submit u new . scale for the consideration of tho Board . The last revision took place in the year 1874 , and at the Quarts I v Communication in June of that , year the salaries of officials of Grand Lodge were fixed at the following scale : —
To Yearly Office . Commence . Increase . Maximum . £ £ £ Chief Clerk 300 20 400 Cashier or 2 nd Clerk ... 200 15 300 3 rd Clerk 120 10 200
4 th Clerk 120 10 200 Sth Clerk 120 10 200 Grand Tyler 100 10 150 Report was also made to Grand Lodge that the number of Lodges then on the roll was 1 , 380 , whereas there are now 2 , 024 . Report waa
also made of the following facta : — Number of certificates Gross receipts of issued by Grand Lodge Grand Lodge and and Grand Chapter . Grand Chapter . £ ad
1873 8766 17 , 891 15 4 whereas at the present time they stand in the following manner : —« £ s d
1892 10242 25 , 118 8 2 Taking these facts into consideration , of the increase in the number of Lodges , of certificates issned , and of the annuil increase in the receipts dnring the last twenty years , wo are of opinion that the time has arrived for revising the salaries in the Grand Secretary ' s office .
In making such revisions , however , we consider that the recommendations for increase should apply iu each case to tbe present holder of the office only in consideration of hia length of service , aud thnt the scale settled in 1874 should still remain in force with respect toall new appointment ? . Since tbe year 1874 the work in the Grand Secretary ' s office haa
increased so much that it has been found necessary to engage the services of three additional olerks . The Grand Secretary was also authorised by resolution of the Board of the 28 th April 1893 to engage the services of a clerk to take down
letters and other mattera in shorthand , and this he has done , bat the clerk so appointed is only yet on probation . The following ia a Hat of the officials now in the Grand Secretary's office , with the dates of their appointment and present salary : — Office . Name . Date of appoint . Present ment . salary .
£ Chief Clerk - - A . Pendlebnry - 1864 . 400 Cashier or 2 nd Clerk - W . Dodd . . 1866 - 300 3 rd Clerk - - W . H . Lee - 1873 . 250 4 th Clerk - - N . Green - 1873 - 225 Sth Clerk - - A . J . Berry - 1876 - 225

But we aro of opinion that the following additions should be made to the salaries : — Name . Age . Years' service . Salary . , ?** ' Maximum .
£ £ A . Pendlebnry 53 29 400 20 500 W . Dodd - 55 27 300 20 400 W . H . Lee - 56 20 250 20 330 N . Green - 46 20 225 15 285 A . J . Berry - 68 17 225 IS 285

In addition to the office of Grand Tyler Bro . Sadler performs the duties of Sub-Librarian , for which he receives a salary of £ 20 per annum . Bro . Sadler has many qualifications for this offlco and a considerable amount of Masonio knowledge and information . It appears that in order to keep the Library in the efficient state in whioh it is , he devotes nearly the whole of his leisure time to the work . We consider tho salary of £ 20 per annum quite inadequate ,
and think that his salary as Assistant Librarian should be raised to £ 40 . There ore three Porters in the establishment earning weakly wages , and we think they should all be increased to a maximum as nnder : — Name . a - t ° t Wage . Maximum , appointment . a
