THE BENEVOLENT FESTIVAL .
A TOTAL of close upon £ 13 , 000 was announced on Wednesday as the result of the Anniversary-Festival of the Eoyal Masonic Benevolent Institution ,
held under the presidency of Col . Gerard Noel Money , C . B ., Provincial Grand Master for Surrey , and no doubt that sum will be exceeded before the returns of the
Festival are made up , so that we may express the liveliest satisfaction over the result of the first Festival of 1894 . The gathering was in every way a success , and may
be regarded as a fitting termination to a successful canvass throughout the Craft on behalf of our Old People , for we must bear in mind the fact that wherever we turn there are complaints of bad trade , and such
evidences of financial complications as would have excused a much less favourable result ; but happily the enthusiasm of the English Brotherhood on behalf of
this Fund has once more been proved to be stronger than the outside circumstances we have referred to , and as a result we are in the position to record this latest success on behalf of the Charitable Institutions of the
Craft . The Chairman on Wednesday was supported by a Board of Stewards numbering 296 , of whom 137 were accredited to London , and 159 to Provincial and outside
districts , and the satisfaction be expressed as to the result of the appeals made by those Stewards , endorsed as they were by the opinion of the Secretary of the Institution , goes far to prove that the workers of the
year did very well , and brought up a total in excess of what was anticipated . Col . Money said they had looked upon £ 12 , 000 as a probable and a satisfactory result , but that total was exceeded by upwards of £ 650 when
the figures were read out at the Festival , and there were sufficient lists outstanding , and other likely sums in view , to justify the opinion that upwards of thirteen thousand pounds would be secured , and if that sum is
realised it should satisfy all concerned in the welfare of tbe Institution , and , from a sympathetic point of view , those who have a preference for one or other of the Educational Funds of the Craft .
There were some very good lists among the London representatives , no less than ten of the Brethren bringr ing up three figure totals . It is quite right that Bro . James Terry , the long tried and much appreciated
Secretary of the Institution , should take the premier place , with a list of £ 187 10 s , he standing as representative of the Highbury Lodge , No . 2192 , which is one
of the most successful of the many Lodges he has assisted to establish , although we can well believe he would have preferred to see many Brethren in front of him , and would have cordially assisted as far as lay in

his power , any Brother who desired to put his total into the shade—but the fact remains , Bro . Terry is first this year among the London Stewards , and the Craft will willingly accord him the honours of his position . But it is not in this matter alone that he has won fresh
laurels for himself over this Festival . It is not too
much to say that a large part of this year ' s success is due to bis personal efforts , or to the exertions of those who work under his direction , for we believe it is only their persistent and frequent personal canvass that has
brought the number of Stewards up to its very respectable total , while the way in which they plead in support of the Stewards' efforts is so well known as to require but mere referring to here , in order to impress it on the
minds of those of our readers who have had an opportunity of listening to one of the stirring addresses to be heard when either of them is present at a Lodge meeting . The list of Bro . W . Hillier , as representing the
Highgate Lodge , No . 1366 , was returned at the Festival as £ 158 lis , but that has since been raised by an addition
of £ 20 to £ 178 lis , so that there is not £ 10 between it and the one that takes the first place and , moreover , this is another Lodge with which the name of Bro . Terry has long been associated , while there is the further
feature to mention that for the past 24 years this Lodge has regularly sent a Steward to the Festival of this Institution . The Lodge La Tolerance , No . 538 , takes the
third place , with a return of £ 130 4 s , which sum includes a personal donation of 100 guineas from the Steward , Bro . S . G . Edridge , whose installation was recently made the occasion of special rejoicings in this Lodge . The
Creaton Lodge , No . 1791 , contributes £ 127 10 s 6 d ; the Leopold , No . 1571 , £ 126 ; the Koyal Albert , No . 907 , £ 107 12 s 6 d ; the Eoyal Athelstan , No . 19 , £ 105 ; the Southwark , No . 879 , £ 105 ; the Clerkenwell , No . 1964 , £ 102 18 s at the hands of one of its Stewards , and £ 10 10 s from another , while Bro . W . Baddeley contributed £ 105 as an unattached Steward . We give
further details in another part of this issue as to the individual lists , so that it is not necessary to refer to them at greater length now , except to express
further gratification at the result , both individually and collectively .
The Provinces also present some notable features , prominent in this direction being the return from West Yorkshire which , with thirteen Stewards , is accredited with £ 1 , 837 10 s , that sum including a personal donation
by Bro . George Heaton , of the Amphibious Lodge , of 1 , 200 guineas . By this most generous gift West Yorkshire secures the first place among the Provinces at this
Festival , being followed by the Chairman ' s own Province of Surrey , the members of which district sent- up £ 1 , 385 7 s , the collection of thirty-six Stewards . Details
