ENTERTAINMENT NOTES .

Criterion . —In " The Physician , " a new play of modern life , Mr . Henry Arthur Jones has given us another phase—or perhaps we should say a series of phases—of the life we live at the present time . The principal characters are not altogether of the best , but Mr . Jones has evolved a wonderfully interesting play out of far from agreeable materials . Dr . Lewin Carey , a fashionable middle-aged physician , has an intrigue with Lady Valerie Camville , who , fearful of scandal and bored wifch her lover ' s devotion , decides

to leave him . In despair Dr . Carey throws up his profession , and is about to depart for India , when he is consulted by Miss Edana Hir . de , who is anxious about the health of her sweetheart , Walter Amphiel . Attracted by her pretty face the physician promises to take up the case , and soon finds out that Amphiel is a dispicable drunkard and seducer , although posing as an advocate of teetotalism . A fine study of character is evinced in the doctor's struggle between love and duty , until Edana learns the truth and , Amphiel

conveniently dying , the usual happy ending takes place . We have so long been accustomed to see Mr . Charles Wyndham as the representative of light touch and go characters , that the more serious side of his art is at first rather startling . But those who remember his David Garrick , and his more recent Sir Jasper , can readily imagine what artistic qualifications he brings to bear upon the complicated part of Dr . Carey . The alternations of grief , hope , and love are admirably depicted , and as the play proceeds one's

sympathy is aroused and we wish him joy in his wooing . The next important character , thafc of Lady Valerie , fche bored , restless woman of society , ever in search of distraction , but finding no happiness , is faithfully represented by Miss Marion Terry . Edana is a somewhat colourless character , and gives but little scope for Miss Mary Moore ' s talents , but is of course a charming and graceful picture in the play . The wretched Walter is shown up with nervous intensity by Mr . T . B . Thalberg , and some humorous sketches of country people are given by Misses B . Vining , C

Addison , M . Clayton , and Messrs . J . G . Taylor , Kenneth Douglas , and A . E . George . The most pleasing personages are the Rev . Peregrine and Dr . Brooker , the physician ' s manly straightforward friend , both of which are capitally pourtrayed by Mr . Alfred Bishop and Mr . Leslie Kenyon . The piece is prettily mounted , and the costumes of Mesdames Moore and Terry are exquisite . Matinees will be given every Saturday afc 2 . 30 , so as to enable those living out of town an opportunity of witnessing tho performance without the inconvenience of late trains .

London Pavilion . —After a very long connection with this popular place of amusement our respected Brother Edward Swanborough has resi gned his position of manager , and has been succeeded by another worthy member of the Craft in the person of Bro . Frank Glenisfcer , who is determined to maintain the old traditions of fcho house . The programme , which embraces some of fche best known names in the music-hall profession , has all the charm

of variety , and as a special attraction there is the marvellous Sandow , who combines strength with grace in his wonderful entertainment ; Miss Jennie Mills , in "La Danse Lumineuse " ; and Mdlle . Louise Beaudot , the latest importation from the Continent . In celebration of the Diamond Jubilee a grand special matinee will be given on Monday , 26 fch instant , in aid of the special Appeal Fund of £ 100 , 000 for the Charing Cross Hospital , when all the best available talent will appear .

Garrick . — "My Friend the Prince" having now settled down into a permanent success , Bro . Brickwell , the lessee , will take the opportunity of paying a long promised visit to America , during which time he will combine business with pleasure , by negotiating on tbe other side for two or three plays he has already secured and copyrighted in this country . Bro . Brickwell hones to sail the third week in April .
