THB COST OF OUB CHAEITIES .
To the Editor of the FBEEMASON ' CHKONICLE . DEAE , SIR AND BROTHER , —The sincere thanks of the Brethren are due to you for calling attention to the cost of maintaining the Masonic Charities . As "CEITIC" says in . his letter , reference to this subject is considered as little short of high treason by those at head-quarters . But this will not prevent the Brethren forming their opinion , and smothered criticism will burst forth if too much confined . Are these matters properl y dealt with in
the Masonic Press ? Attention has been called in two or three quarters lately to the high salaries paid to the clerical staff of our Institutions , as compared with other Charities . Why could not the whole be regulated by one central Committee , with one Secretary , instead of three highly paid officials ? How is it that Charitable Institutions are so generous in this direction ? Yours fraternally , LIFE SUBSCRIBES ( BOYS ) .
We have much pleasure in tendering our congratulations to Bro . E . G . Mulvey , who ,, we believe , is to receive from the Grand Master the appointment of Pursuivant ab the annual -Festival of Grand Lodge on the 28 th inst . Bro . Mulvey has for many years taken an active interest in the work of Freemasonry , and the honour thus conferred upon him will doubtless prove one of the most popular appointments of the year .
PLYMOUTH INSTRUCTION LODGE . BBOS . C . G . Withell , G . Dunsterville , and W . E . Chapeli are the permanent Officers of the Instruction Lodge which holds its meetings under the banner of Lodge St . John , No . 70 , at the Freemasons' Hall , Princess Square , Plymouth . The Lodge is opened every Thursday during
the winter months , enabling members of the Three Towns Lodges to participate in the instruction of working the degrees of the OrderT The past week concludes the 1896-7 session , says the " Western Mercury , " and on Thursday , 25 th ult ., several Brethren joined in the annual supper held at the Club .
The health of the three executive Officers named was drunk amid great enthusiasm . The success , it was stated , had been very marked during the past session , and some young members who had gained the necessary knowledge in the Lodge testified to the ability and kindness at all times displayed by Bros . Withell , G . Dunsterville and Chapeli . Songs by several of those present concluded the proceedings .
