FREEMASONRY IN THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS .
THE issue of "The Illustrated London News" of the 20 th August contains two pictures of peculiar interest to Freemasons . The first is a copy of a photograph of a quasi-Masonic apron used by the rebels at their secret
meetings , and is also used in battle . The apron , which was found on the dead body of one of the insurgents after an engagement , indicates pretty clearly that the Brotherhood to whom it belonged aspired to deeds of blood . To all appearance it resembles an ordinary Master Mason ' s apron without the rosettes ( the colour of the border is not
mentioned ) ; but on the body of the apron just under the flap is a bleeding head , held up by a left hand and arm , the face of which is pierced by a dagger held b y a right hand . Truly an emblem of fearful import , and , as 6 iir contemporary observes , nothing further is needed to prove that the "Freemasonry " of the Manila insurgents is as remote from that of the real Brotherhood as the assassination of enemies is
from honest combination against evils . In fact the rebellion was the result , according to its sympathisers , of the tyranny and oppression exercised by the religious orders of Manila , who , under the Archbishop , largely monopolised the administration of affairs in the islands . The loyal Spaniards , on the other hand , found the cause of all the trouble in the innumerable anti-Catholic secret societies . The conflict has
been called that of Friars against Freemasons , but it would be unfair to the great organisation of the Craft to say that it is in any way responsible for the deeds that have been done in the name of Freemasonry in the Philippines .
The second illustration represents a number of the private tokens used as passports , and for similar purposes , among the different bands of rebels . Several well-known Masonic emblems figure more or less consistently throughout
these signs , one of the commonest being that bearing the name of the Ka-tagalu , or Tagalu society , the Tagalus being the most numerous and powerful among the many native tribes of the Philippines .
The installation meeting of the Upton Lodge , No . 1227 , will be held on Thursday next , at the Great Eastern Hotel , Liverpool Street , E . G ., when Bro . William Athol Bray will be installed as Master , in succession to Brother Henry Hyde . Other items of business on the agenda include the reception
of the Auditors report , two initiations , two passings , and a raising , so that the early hour of 3 o ' clock for which the Lodge is called is none too soon to commence the business . The installation banquet will follow at half-past seven . The Lodge continues to occupy a most satisfactory position ,
having a balance of £ 64 . 6 s 5 d on the General account , and of £ 109 6 s 1 id on the Benevolent Fund account , despite the fact that grants amounting to close on £ 50 have been voted from this latter during the past year , ' while an
additional asset appears in the form of Arrears of subscriptions , £ 66 . We wish the Brethren of the Lodge a successful meeting on Thursday , a prosperous year under the rule of Bro . Bray , and a continuance of the good fortune that has lately attended the Lodge .
There is a particularly deserving case among the candidates for the October election of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls—No . 17 on the list , Rosina Frances Green—whose mother died in 18 93 , and whose father was drowned in the Skegness disaster the following year , leaving three childretotall forThe
young n y unprovided . case is strongly recommended by the Officers and Brethren of the Burdett Coutts Lodge , No . 1278 , and many other well known Masons , among them Bro . Basil Stewart , who will be pleased to receive proxies on the girl ' s behalf , addressed to him at Clovelly Villa , Colworth Road , Leytonstone .
Our esteemed Brother the Lord Mayor of London Colonel Davies , M . P ., brought his visit to Tenby to a close on Tuesday , when he left for London , leaving there the following day , accompanied by the Town Clerk of London Bro . Sir John B . Monckton P . G . W ., in the Peninsular and
