PROVINCIAL GRAND CHAPTER OF WILTSHIRE .

A MEETING was held on Friday , 25 th ult ., at the Masonio Hall , Trowbildge . There wr * a numerous and influential gathering . Amongst the business to 13 transacted , tho several reports wore to be submitted , the P . G . Treasurer to be elected , and tho P . G . Officers for tha

ensuing year to be appointed and invested . The Registrar s report to the Most Excellent G . S . of Wilts shows that from the six Chapters in the Province the following summary has been received : —Exaltations , 11 ; joining momtars , 2 ;

deaths , 2 ; resignations , 18 ; subscribing members , 138 ; hon . ditto , 7 ; serving companions , 6 ; total , 151 . The accounts show a general balance in bank of £ 146 8 s 8 d . Business over , the brethren adjourned to the George Hotel , to a Grand banquet , admirably served up in Miss Wade ' s well-known style *

SOUTH SAXON CHAPTER , No . 811 . THE annnal gathering took place afc the Freemasons' Hall , High Street , Lewes , on tbe 23 rd nit . Companion Smith Stone , of Newhaven , was installed as M . E . Z ., Comp . J . W . Broad ( Lowes ) as H ., and Comp . Wright ( Shortbrido * e ) as J . Tho other Officers were appointed as follow : Compa . Wilson S . E ., Rnssell S . N ., Adames Treasurer , Weston Principal Sojourner , Bull 1 st Assistant Sojourner ,

Peters 2 nd Assistant Sojourner Hall Janitor . Companion George Holman I . P . Z . waa presented with a handsome jewel in recognition of tbe excellent manner in which he had carried ont his dnties dnring year of office . In the evening the nsual banqnet took place at the Bear Hotel , the three newly-chosen Principals occupying the

choirs at the head of fche table . The visitors included Comps . Lieutenant-Colonel Randolph Grand Superintendent , Freeman Prov . Soribe E ., Turner ( Dorking ) , nnd Higham ( Yarborough Chapter ) , and the Comps . present were Lncns , Briccoe , Ellman , Tanner ,

Chapman , Holman , Stone , and Hunt ( Uckfield ) . Tho Masonio programme of toasts was carried out , and the Lewes Orpheus Glee Union contributed a selection of songs and glees which added gveatly to the enjoyable nature of the gathering .

GRAND LODGE OF SCOTLAND .

AT a meeting of tho Grand Committee of tbe Grand Lodge of Scotland , hold on the 24 th ult ., in Edinburgh—Brother Sir Charles Dalrymple in the chaira letter was read from Sir Archibald Campbell intimating hig desire not to be re-elected Grand Master Mason of

Scotland . Brother the Earl of Haddington was unanimously nominated as Grand Master . Among the other nominations were the following : —Bros . Dalrymple Duncan Senior Warden Glasgow , Colonel Campbell Junior Warden

Perth , White Chaplain Canongate Parish , Edinburgh , Colonel Stirling of Kippendavie Senior Deacon , Collin Gellatley , G . C . H . M'Naught . We understand that the

brethren intend to place a bust of Sir Archibald Campbell in the headquarters of tho Grand Lodge—an honour whicb is done to every Pasfc Grand Master .

PROPOSED MASONIC TEMPLE FOR GLASGOW . —Ifc is again rumonred that a Masonio Temple is to be erected in Glasgow . Bro . John Graham the Provincial Grand Master estimates fchafc the cost of tho scheme would amount to abont £ 20 , 000 . The present idea ia to form a Limited Liability Company , and as there are some 10 , 000 mem . hers of the Craft in the West of Scotland , the required sum wonld be realised by each member taking two £ 1 shares . In tho course of

time , when the existing leases of Lodge-rooms expired , all tho Lodges in Glasgow would be accommodated in the Masonic Tomple , while in addition fco several halls ifc is proposed that there shonld be reading and recreation rooms in the building . Although much in favour of the scheme , the Provincial Grand Master has decided thafc at least two-thirds of fche money must be subscribed before any building operations should be undertaken .

The 350 th performance of the successful comic opera , "La Cigale " Was given on Wednesday , and , judging by the reception accorded it by a crowded audience , the interest in tho piece is as great aa ever . Bncoreu were frequent , every item going without a hitch .

THE RIGHT HON . LORD METHUEN . THE announcement of the death of Bro . tho Right Hon . Lord Methuen , Past , Provincial Grand Master of Wiltshire has been anticipated . Tbo sad event occurred fit his residence , Corsbam Court , on Saturday , 26 fch wit ., : ift « r a long and protracted illness . His lordahip was appointed

Provincial Grand Master of Wiltshire in March 1853 , his senior colleague being Bro . Lord Leigh , who was appointed Provincial Grand Master of Warwickshire tho preceding year . Lord Methuen was a R . A . Mason , and occupied the chair of Z . in the Wiltshire Chapter , No . 355 ,

Swindon , in 1875 , aud also that of Past Provincial Grand H . Wiltshire . He had been perfected Rose Croix , 18 ° , in the system of the Ancient and Accepted Rito , and was a supporter of our three Charitable Institutions , a = * well as a Trustee of the Charity Organisation and Benevolent Fund of his Province .

BRO . M . S . LARLHAM . WALWORTH has just lost one of its oldest inhabitants by the sudden death of Bro . Mark Samuel Larlham , aged 69 years . The deceased had resided in tbe district for a great number of years , and was respected and loved by all with whom he had connections either in business or in

private life . He was very prominent in fcho Masonio circle , having been initiated in the Macdonald Lodgo , No . 1216 ; afterwards he passed through the ohair to the credit of himself and the admiration of the brethren . Ho was also P . M . of the United Pilgrims Lodge , and P . Z . of that

Chapter , and Preceptor to the Lodge of Instrnction for many years . He was a supporter of the Charities , having been Steward to the R . M . B . I . 1880 , and Steward Boys' 1884 He was also a Mark Master Mason , one of the original

promoters of the Surrey Masonic Hall , and the firsfc W . M . of tbe Surrey Masonic Hall Lodge , No . 1539 . He received a jewel in the year 1880 for sen-ng as Treasurer , whicb position he held until the tr-ne of bis decease . He was also P . M . ofthe Panmure Lodge aid P . Z . of Chapter .

BRO . E . CHARLES ROSSINGTON . THE remains of the late Brother E . Charles Rossington , proprietor of tbe Wing Tavern , were interred in tho Newark Cemetery , on tbe 28 th ult ., with Masonic honours-. The deceased gentlemen was in the employ of Messrs . Cbas . Seely and Co . in their offices , afc Cinderhill , np to a few

years ago His father , Mr . E . Rossington , was cashier for Messrs . Seely and Co . for many years , and retired above three years ago . The deceased gentleman leaves a wife and small family . His funeral was attended by many sorrowing friends . He was a man highly honoured and respected in the town .

THE death of Bro . Jobn Fox , of the firm of Messrs . Fox and Vergette , auctioneers of Peterborough , took place on Friday , 25 th September . He was well known throughout the Eastern Midlands , and was considered the Father of fche Freemasons in fche district .

The Duke of Connaught is announced to visit Salisbury on 31 sfc inst ., to instal the Earl of Radnor as Provincial Grand Master of Wiltshire .

Afc the last meeting of fche William Preston Lodge , No . 766 , at the Cannon Street Hotel , on tho 24 th ultimo , Bro . Henri Heck was elected W . M . for the ensuing twelve months . Bro . W . J . Miller P . M . was re-elected Treasurer , and Bro . Reinhardfc Tyler . The installation meeting w l take place on the fourth Thursday in November .
