PROV . G . LODGE OF DEVONSHIRE

fl IHE annual meeting of the membors of Grand Lodge JL for fche Province of Devon was held on the 23 rd ult ., in the Guildhall , Tavistock , under the banner of Lodge Bedford , No . 282 . Additional interest was attached to the meeting by reason of the fact thafc Lodge Bedford is

celebrating it *? Centenary this year . The Lodge is now in a most flourishing condition , both financially and in point of membership . Tho present W . M is Wor . Bro . John Squire , and the arrangements made under his direction for the reception of the P . G . Lodge at the meeting , and

the banquet which followed , were excellent , and gave general satisfaction . The Committee of Petitions met in the Lodge-room at noon . AH the representatives were present . The reports of the Hon . Secretary ( Bro . J . B . Gover )

and ^ the London representative ( Bro . the Bev . Wm , Whittley ) were read , and having been discussed , cordial votes of thanks were accorded to them for their past services . The committee ' voted £ 80 for relief to widows of distressed Masons , and 100 guineas to Masonic Charities . The P . G . Lodge assembled in tho Guildhall . The R . W .

Bro . Viscount Ebrington , M . P ., P . M . 251 , P . G . M ., sat on the throne . The P . G . Secretary reported on the returns received from the Lodges in tho Province for the year ending 31 st December last ; there were on the books of the Lodges m the Province 3 , 062 Masons , beine an increase of 132

over the previous year ; that 219 brethren had been initiated into Masonry dnring the year , a decrease of 26 . The number of brethren returned in arrears was 477 , an increase of 85 over the preceding year . He had received tbo sum of £ 10 10 s , being a moiety of the sum necessary to obtain a Life Governorshi p in the Royal Masonic Bene-

volent Institution for Aged Freemasons , together with an application for a similar grant from each of the following Lodgea : — Friendship , 202 , Devonport ; Charity , 223 , Plymouth ; Bedford , 282 , Tavistock ; Union , 444 , Starcross ; and St . Maurice , 1855 , Plympton ; also the sum of £ 10 10 s ,

buing tho moiety necessary to obtain a Life Governorship in the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , together with an application for a similar grant from St . John tha Baptist , 39 , Exeter ; Sfc . John , 70 , Plymouth ; St . Peter , 1125 , Tiverton ; Semper Fidelis , 1254 , Exeter ; Brent , 1284 ,

Topsham ; and Jordan , 1402 , Torquay ; also tho sum of £ 10 10 s from St . John the Baptist , No . 39 , Exeter , the moiety of the sum necessary to obtain a Life Governorship

in the Royal Masonio Institution for Girla . This waa the largest number of applications which had been received from Lodges . The report was received and adopted .

The P . G . Treasurer ( Brother W . Powell ) reported that the total receipts amounted to £ 632 , including a balance in hand of £ 220 , and dues from Lodges of £ 322 . There was a balance in hand of £ 249 . The report was

adopted . Brother . F . Pollard P . M . 1284 , . P . P . G . D . C , hon . seo . of the Fortescue Annuity Fund , read the annual report of tho govei'nors of that fund . There were , he said , six annuitants on the fund , viz ., a brother of 156 , elected in

1871 ; a brother of 106 , elecfced in 1878 ; a brother of 710 , elected in 1888 ; a brother of 248 , elected in 1888 ; a brother of 39 , elected in 1888 ; and a brother of 1205 , elected in 1891 . The Treasurer ' s audited report to June 21 th last shewed tbe total receipts to be £ 264 19 s 9 d ,

including £ 92 from P . G . Lodge , £ 5 5 s from P . G . Chapter , and £ 57 in donations . The payments were £ 172 to annuitants , and after investing £ 30 in the bank there was a balance in hand of £ 43 . The capital account ran : Exeter Market bonds , £ 500 ; Exeter Asylum bonds , £ 750 ; ;

Consols , £ 1 , 114 ; and Devon and Exeter Savings Bank , £ 270 . The report continued : Whenever a single vacancy arises there are always many duly qualified applicants for the annuity . An increase , therefore , in the number o £ annuitants is advisable , which is not practicable with the k

income at present available . As each Lodge has now a direct voting power pro rata with its contributions to tho fund , ifc is hoped that iu apportioning Lodge funds to charitable purposes more consideration will be given to

the requiremeots of this local Charity . Bro . Stocker expressed a hopo that extra efforts would be made to double the number of annuitants on the fund . The P . G . M ., the Acting P . G . S . W ., and Bro . Allsford concurred . The report was received .

Bro . J . B . Gover P . M . 70 P . P . G . Secretary presented

the report ofthe Committee of Petitions , whioh stated that during the year five Devon candidates had been elected to the great London Charities . There were now forty Devon candidates supported by the great Chavitios . The Committee felt they owed a debt of gratitude to Bro . the Rev .

W . Whittley for his admirable management of the votes of the Province . It could not be too often impressed upon the members and the Lodges that there should be a great effort to increase their donation * and subscriptions , and at the same time to relieve the Secretary from some

unnecessary labour , by sending their votes as early as possible after their receipt . At a meeting of the Committee in January they granted £ 5 to the widow of a deceased brother of Lodge 39 , Exeter ; £ 6 to tbe widow of a deceased brother of 112 , Exeter ; £ 5 to the widow of a deceased brother of 282 , Tavistock ; and £ 5 to the widow

of a deceased brother of 251 , Barnstaple . At their meeting that day they recommended tho P . G . Lodge to grant £ 20 to the widow of a brother of 112 , Exeter ; £ 10 to the widow of a brother of 282 , Tavistock ; £ 5 to a distressed brother of 1550 , Plymouth , and recommended a farther

sum of £ 20 ; £ 5 to the widow of a brother of 156 , with a recommend for a further grant of £ 5 ; £ 5 to the widow of a brother of £ 954 , and recommended a further grant of £ 5 . They recommended that tho Lodges 202 , 282 , 444 , 1125 , 70 , 223 , 1856 , 39 , 1284 , and 1402 , who , in

accordance with the P . G . Lodge laws , had sent £ 10 10 s each to the P . G . Secretary , have their amounts supplemented afc a cost to tbe Province of £ 105 . The Committee were pk-ased to receive from Bro . McLeod , the Secretary of the Royal

Masouic Institution for Boys , an acknowledgment of the services rendered by Bros . Trascott 1251 , John Taylor 1402 , and F . B . Westlako 70 . This report was aldo adopted . Bro . J . Stocker proposed tho election of Bro . J . B . Crabb
