special , dispensation Brethren attending will be allowed in Craft clothing . Bro . Willoughby , Mus . Bac . Oxon ., P . P . G . O . Devon , is once more in charge , and a capital show by the children , in view of former experiences , is assured . Bro . Willoughby has composed a new nautical operetta entitled

, The crew of the 4 . 7 . " This at once arouses reminiscences of the part H . M . S . Powerful played in the relief of Ladysmith . The scene of the operetta is laid on her deck , and Bro . Willoughby ' s music , always bright and tuneful on these occasions , will be enhanced by the fact that the lyrics will be written by Mr . G . V . Keast .

THE NEW G . SEC . OF SCOTLAND .

AT a recent meeting of the Grand Committee of the Grand Lodge of Scotland , certain arrangements were made with regard to the election of a successor to the present Grand Secretary Bro . D . Murray Lyon . It was agreed that the Brother appointed to the Office should devote his whole time to its duties , and receive a salary of £ 400 per annum in full

of all duties devolving upon him , including those of the Annuity Fund ; and that the Special Committee in charge of the matter should select and submit a leet of candidates to Grand Lodge , from which the Office should be filled at a " pro re nata" meeting of the Grand Lodge on Thursday ,

13 th December next . It was further resoved that the election should be by an absolute majority of the members voting on the occasion ; and that the resignation of Brother Murray Lyon should only take effect on and after the date of the election of his successor .

The annual ball of the West Ham Abbey Lodge , No . 22 9 , is fixed to take place on the 29 th inst , at the Town Flail , Stratford . The proceeds will be devoted to the funds

of the West Ham Hospital . Brother W . Ii . Ridgley , of 3 Selborne Gardens , Ilford , is again acting as the Hon . Sec . Last year £ 126 was sent to the Hospital as the result of the ball .

* » » There are divided opinions held on the subject of life membership , says our Scotch contemporary , the " Mallet , " who continues : The other night I came upon two Past Masters in discussion on the question , the one holding that

the system was hurtful to the Lodge , the other that it put the Lodge in good funds and secured its position , besides giving the Brother an unbroken connection and interest in the Lodge during his life . My own opinion is in favour of life membership . If there is any fear of loss to the Lodge ,

let the fee of perpetuity in membership be increased . In the case of a Lodge sending out circulars for each meeting , causing an actual expenditure on each member in postage of at least one shilling per annum , the life fee of 21 s is far too small ; but the remedy in this direction rests with the Lodge . The smallness of the fee should not condemn the system .

M . said that Bro . * Genese ' s zeal for Masonry had been strongly marked in no ordinary way , and

that every Brother who aspired to the high position he held and appreciated , must envy the Immediate Past Master's success as W . M . of the Lodge . In presenting him with a P . Miles added that this privilege he considered a great one , for on every side very high encomiums had been deservedly passed on the way the ceremonies in the Lodge had been' conducted .

Gervas Cooper Organist , comprised solos from Miss Florence Ogilvy ,
