CRAFT .

— : o : — COMBERMERE LODGE OP UNION , No . 295 , ( CHESHIRE . )

THIS Lodge met on Thursday night , at the Macclesfield Arms-Hotel , when there was a good attendance of the members , also of brethren from the sister Lodge ( Unity , 227 ) and Bro . Dr . Forshaw , of Bradford . Bro . W . Horsfield was passed to the second degree , Bro . J . H . Brookes conducting the ceremony , Thereafter Mr . W . Hammond was initiated by Bro . Thomas Lookitt P . M . Treasurer , who

haa been a member of tha Lodge over thirty-three years . Th ? Master's ohai was again taken by Bro . J . H . Brookes P . M ., an Mr . Joseph Westwood was initiated . The ballot was then taken for the W . M . for the ensning year ( tbe retiring W . M . being Bro . George Ibeson ) , and it was unanimous in favour of Bro . Thomas Lookitt . Ia March next tbe Lodge will celebrate

its centenary , and the brethren agreed that the oldest eligible brother shonld occupy the chair during such a memorable year , hence their unanimous choice fell on Bro . Thomas Lookett , than whom there is no more proficient or consistent Mason in the Craft . We under . stand also that dnring the centenary year all the chairs will be filled by P . M . ' s . Before closing , the Lodge voted a sum of ten guineas

from the funds of the Lodge for the new Cheshire Masonio Benevol en t Institution . We ought to add that the object of Bro . Dr . Forshaw ' s visit to the Lodge was to make himself acquainted wirh its history , he having been requested—and kindly consented—to write an epic poem for the centenary celebration . The Doctor was received with every token of fraternal feeling and gratitude expressed to him for the interest shown by him in the Lodge .

A REGULAR meeting took place on Tuesday , the 29 th nit ., in the Freemasons' Hall , Cooper Street , when the following were present—Bros . Start W . M ., Jno . Smith S . W ., Thorpe J . CALLENDAR LODGE , No . 1052 ( MANCHESTER )

Entwistle , T . T . Hardioker , Grocock , Rowortb , Todd , Reilly , Dawson , and others . There were also several Visitors . The brethreu met for tea at 6 o ' clock , after which the Lodge was opened in doe form and the minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed . The ballot was taken for Mr . Hoare and announced favourable . Mr . Hoare was subsequently initiated into Freemasonry by the W . M ., Bro . Jno . Smith S . W . delivering the charge in a moat impressive manner , and

Bro . Thorpe J . W . presenting the working tools . On tho retirement of the candidate , Bro . J . S . Dawson answered the necessary questions leading from the first to tbe second degree , received the test of merit , and retired . The Lodge was then raised to the second degree and Bro . Dawson duly passed to the degree of F . C . by the W . M . The whole of the work . was well done , and received the commendations of the Visitors later on at the social board . There being no further bnsiness , the Lodge was closed in peace and harmony .

SCARBOROUGH LODGE . No . 1214

THE usual monthly meeting of this Lodge was held in the Masonic Hall , Bank Chambers , Batley , on Wednesday evening last , the following being present : —Bros . Arthur Jubb W . M ., Rev ; J . H Evans , M . A ., S . W ., J . F . Bromley J . W ., J . K Blakey , F . G . S ., I . P . M . W . Critohley , J . P ., P . M . I . G ., J . R . Fawcitt P . M ., J . Oldroyd P . M ., ' T . Cantrill P . Tbe Lodge was opened in the first degree , and the minutes of the last regnlar meet . ing were read and confirmed . Bros . Forshaw and Davies , who were applicants as joining brethren of the Lodge , then retired , and the

ballot was taken , whicb , proving in their favour , they were re-admitted and informed by the W . M . that tbey had been unanimousl y elected members of the Lodge . The newly-elected brethren having returned thanks , votes were taken on behalf of Bro . the Rev . J . H . Evans , M . A ., the Worshipfnl Master elect . This proving in his favour , Bro .

Jubb informed him that he had been elected W . M . for the forthcoming year . Bro . E . Hemingway , J . P ., was re-elected Treasnrer , and Bro . Jansen Tyler . Bro . Gamble was proposed as a joining member . The Lodge closed in the first degree , after which the brethren ad . journed for refreshment . The nsual Loyal and Masonic toasts were drunk and a most happy evening was spent .

LODGE OP ISRAEL , No . 1502 . BRO . W . W . MELLOR was , on the 21 st ult ., at the Masonic Temple , Hope Street , Liverpool , duly installed as Worshipfnl Master for the ensuing year , the ceremony of installation being efficiently performed by" Bro . George Thierry the retiring W . M ., assisted by Bro . Andrew Fitzpatriok . The other Officers of the

successfully balloted for as a joining member . In due course a Board of Installed Masters was formed and the ceremony of installation began , the Installing Master being Brother W . Hardoastle , who was highly commended at the close of the ceremony . Tho W . M . elect Bro . Thomas Threlfall was presented by Bro . J . L . Smith , and was duly obligated , installed , and invested . The working tools in

the several degrees were presented by Bro . 0 . Oldham , the address in the N . E . was given by Bro . J . Harrop , that in the W . by Brother Thomas Kay , and tbat in the S . by Bro . S . Statham . The following Officera were appointed , and all present were invested by Bro . Rd . Duxbury : —Bros . Jno . L . Smith I . P . M ., S . Stathim P . M . Chaplain , T . T . Sefton S . The remaining bnsiness was then disposed of ; this comprised the presenting of the Treasurer ' s report , passing the account ? , and election of a Charity Representative . Brother R . H .

Berry presented to the Lodge a very handsome devotional chair ; hearty good wishes were expressed by visiting brethren , and tho Lodge clo « ed in peace and harmony . The usual bauquet followed , after which several Loyal and Masonic toasts were honoured , the proceedings being enlivened by songs and sketches by the following artistes , viz . : —Bros . P . Jones , R . H . Merritt , Thomas Bradbury ,

Charles Turner P . M ., E . Roberts P . M ., Mark Jamea Robinson S . W ., and others . Bro . J . L . Smith I . P . M . proposed the toast of the Worshipfnl Master ; he said—" Provincial Officers and Brethren , during my Mastership , amongst the several duties I had to perform , none have been more pleasing or gratifying to myself , than the one I have the honour and privilege of performing at its close . Since my

advent amongst you , there has sprang np a strong , and I believe a lasting friendship between tbe W . M . and myself , and it affords me unspeakable pleasure to see him numbered amongst the rulers of the Craft . Our Friendship dates from the Lodge pic-nic fco Chester , sines which time I have been the recipient of very many disinterested acts of kindness at his hands . During tbe year that has just expired ,

I have felt somewhat like an interloper in the chair—onr worthy brother whom we have juat installed being my senior—but this feeling is now removed , and wo meet on one common level as Instilled Masters . We all know how well our W . M . has attended to bis Masonic duties in the past , and should the Great Architect of the Universe grant him health and strength , things point unmistakably

to a prosperous and harmonious year . I would say muoh more in praise of Bro . Threlfall bad I the eloquence of a Salisbury or a Gladstone , but lacking tbat gift I shall conclude by calling upon yon to drink right heartily the health of our Worshipful Master . Brother Threlfall | said—In responding to the | toasb of my health so kindly proposed by oar I . P . M ,, I must accord my thanks , not only to him

for his good wishes and brotherly feeling , but also to tho brethren present for tho hearty manner of its acceptance . I can assure all , especially the brethren of the Albert Victor Lodge , that I feel very proud of the position in which I have been placed , and no donbt you will agree with me , that it is a very laudable feeling , as I am convinced that unless the brethren of the Lodge had considered me

worthy of occupying the chair of K . S ., the ceremony so far as I am concerned would not have taken place . Having , however , been relegated to this chair , 1 promise to do all in my power to maintain its reputation , and when my time of office expires , leave it as unsullied as I found it . VVe have amongst our number most worthy rae' -, who have occupied this position beforo me , and who

bave , as Past Masters , evince 1 au erer-increasing interest in the welfare of this Lodge . Brethren , I characterise them as excellent examples to follow . I am glad to see around this festive board many old friends , obviously hero to show th . > ir brotherly feeling , and I can assure them that I appreciate their attendance . Berry presented to the Lodge a very handsome devotional chair ; hearty good wishes were expressed by visiting brethren , and tho Lodge clo « ed in peace and harmony . The usual bauquet followed , after which several Loyal and Masonic toasts were honoured , the proceedings being enlivened by songs and sketches by the following artistes , viz . : —Bros . P . M . proposed the toast of the Worshipfnl Master ; he said—" Provincial Officers and Brethren , during my Mastership , amongst the several duties I had to perform , none have been more pleasing or gratifying to myself , than the one I have the honour and privilege of performing at its close . Since my

advent amongst you , there has sprang np a strong , and I believe a lasting friendship between tbe W . M . and myself , and it affords me unspeakable pleasure to see him numbered amongst the rulers of the Craft . Our Friendship dates from the Lodge pic-nic fco Chester , sines which time I have been the recipient of very many disinterested acts of kindness at his hands . During tbe year that has just expired ,

I have felt somewhat like an interloper in the chair—onr worthy brother whom we have juat installed being my senior—but this feeling is now removed , and wo meet on one common level as Instilled Masters . We all know how well our W . M . has attended to bis Masonic duties in the past , and should the Great Architect of the Universe grant him health and strength , things point unmistakably

to a prosperous and harmonious year . I would say muoh more in praise of Bro . Threlfall bad I the eloquence of a Salisbury or a Gladstone , but lacking tbat gift I shall conclude by calling upon yon to drink right heartily the health of our Worshipful Master . Brother Threlfall | said—In responding to the | toasb of my health so kindly proposed by oar I . P . M ,, I must accord my thanks , not only to him

for his good wishes and brotherly feeling , but also to tho brethren present for tho hearty manner of its acceptance . I can assure all , especially the brethren of the Albert Victor Lodge , that I feel very proud of the position in which I have been placed , and no donbt you will agree with me , that it is a very laudable feeling , as I am convinced that unless the brethren of the Lodge had considered me

worthy of occupying the chair of K . S ., the ceremony so far as I am concerned would not have taken place . Having , however , been relegated to this chair , 1 promise to do all in my power to maintain its reputation , and when my time of office expires , leave it as unsullied as I found it . VVe have amongst our number most worthy rae' -, who have occupied this position beforo me , and who

bave , as Past Masters , evince 1 au erer-increasing interest in the welfare of this Lodge . Brethren , I characterise them as excellent examples to follow . I am glad to see around this festive board many old friends , obviously hero to show th . > ir brotherly feeling , and I can assure them that I appreciate their attendance .
