Faith Lodge of Instruction , No . 581 . —A meeting of this Lodge was held at the Old Boar ' s Head , Manchester , on Tuesday , the 29 th alt . There were present Bros . H . H . Warbnrton P . M . P . duties of S . D ., J . D ., and I . G . respectively . After the minutes of the former meeting bad been read and confirmed , the ceremony of raising was rehearsed , Bro . Hepworth enacting the part of candidate . It is very gratifying to acknowledge that this Lodge is rapidly increasing in popularity , and is accepted as a capital medium for the successful

practice of brethren who are passing throngh the various offices of their Lodge . Tbe name * of Bros . Shorrocks , Deane , Crone , aud Beever were submitted as new members , and they will accordingly be subject to a ballot upon a fntare occasion . The next meeting of the Instruotion Lodge will be held on Thursday , 8 th December , when will be rehearsed two ceremonies , those of initiation and passing .

The fifth annual sapper in connection with this numerous and popular Lodge of Instrnction was held on Monday , the 28 th ult ., at the Great Eastern Hotel , Liverpool Street , E . G ., the occasion being marked by the presence of the V . W . Bro . Philbrick , Q . C , Grand Registrar and Deputy Prov . Grand Master for Essex , who presided , and who was supported by tbe following brethren : —William Shurmur , Archdeacon

Fortescne Treasurer , occupied the Vice-chair ; the Stewa-ds were Bros . J . King , W . Gower , C Horst , J . Clark , T . W . Stacey , and M . Blieck ,

and Bros . J . 0 . Carter and C . H . Bestow were the Hon . Sees . After an excellent repast , capitally served by Bro . J . A . Grew , the Chairman commenced the toasts by proposing in a few well chosen words the Health of the Queen and Royal Family , including the Most Worshipful Grand Master , and Prosperity to the Craft . It is needless to say the toast was drank with enthusiasm . Bro . Philbrick , in giving the toast of

the evening , Prosperity to the Walthamstow Lodge of Instruction , said that much of the excellent work carried on in tbe various Lodges was undoubtedly due to tbe preparation received in Lodges of Instruotion , which filled one of tbe most useful , he might almost say the most indispensable places iu Freemasonry . When a man is first admitted to the light of Masonry , he finds everything new and strange

to him , but if he has at all in him the making of a good Mason , he reflects as to how he can attain that perfection in the ritual which is so necessary in an Officer , to fulfil generally his great duty to the Craft . He comes to the Lodge of Instruction quite inexperienced , but soon finds that advice and counsel are readily and freely given to him and his task made easy and pleasant . The Constitution

therefore lends its friendly aid by extending its shield over these Lodges of Instruction . He had asked Bro . Shurmur , to whom the prosperity of the Lodge was chiefly due , how long it had been established , and he had diplomatically replied that this was the fifth annual supper . Well ; he congratulated the brethren upon the way in which the Lodge was attended , and the present numerous gathering testified to

their great interest in the Craft . After giving some highly interesting details- as to the amalgamation of the two Grand Lodges in 1813 , Bro . Philbrick went on to say that the ceremonies as now worked by the Lodge of Emulation were the outcome of an agreement arrived at by the Board of Conciliation , and were not blown together , nor did they depend npon the arbitary dictation of any individual . He

congratulated the members upon having suoh a flourishing Lodge of Instruotion and so excellent a Preceptor as Bro . Shurmur , as he was sure that the splendid work carried on in the Province of Essex was due to the careful study aud diligent work shown in their Masonio preparation . Brother Shurmur , in response , said tbat under the fostering care of their President , tbe Lodge bad progres « ed

by leaps and bounds , and was the best attended in tbe metropolis . He was also pleased to say that the work was on a par with the attendances . During the last ten years the population of Walthamstow had increased from 20 , 000 to 50 , 000 , but there had been no increase in the number of Lodge ? , and it had been thought by many distinguished brethren that it would be advantageous to

the Order for an addition to be made by the establishment of a Walthamstow Lodge . This would enable the younger members t > obtain rank in the Craft which they could hardly expect under existing circumstances , and he trusted that their Deputy Grand Master would give the proposition his support at the proper time . He thanked them all for their good wishes , it was a labour of love with

him to act as Preceptor , and be would always do his best to promote tbe interests of Freemasonry . Althongh not strictly Masonic , advantage was taken of the occasion to present an illuminat d testimonial to Bro . Archdeacon Dunbar , as a token of sincere appreciation of his spiritual labours and goodness while ministering at Walthamstow . The testimonial is written on vellum , and i « handsomely framed . referred to tbe disinclination of the Roman Catholic inhabitants o ' this country to become Masons on accoont of giving disp easure tn therr spiritual advisers ; bnt he thought that if tbe powers at the Vatican would consider that the Order was founded upon the purest principles of morality , and that the presence in their ranks of those who exercised the most sacred calling , they would decide that Freemasonry contains nothing but what is desirable . in the names of the subscribers aa a mark of the high esteem in which he was held . Dr . Dunbar , in returning thanks for their good wiahof , felt that W . ihh imstosv and Freemasonry were so closely con . neoted that any onrj taking an interest in well-doing most be a Masor . The Order in England was making rapid advances , and when the Catholics found that all tbat is good in England was united

in Freemasonry they must r-gard it more favourably . Iu fact , he might say , that the Catholic Church looked with a totally different eye upon ^ Freemasonry in England to what it did towards the members in Frnnoe , Germany , and other parts of Europe . His term of residence ot Walthamstow had been the happiest of his life , and it was a gr at plea * urp for him to know that he had performed his

dnty to the satisfaction of the people . Bro . Shormur , in highly complimentary terms , proposed the health of the President , whioh was suitably acknowledged by Bro . Philbrick , who took occasion to thank the brethren for tbeir kindness and sympathy during hia recent deep affliction . Bros . Smethnrst , Wall and Thompson responded for

the Visitors , and a few remarks from the Vice . Chairmen brought the interesting proceedings to a close at a somewhat late hour . The musical arrangements were under the direction of Bro . A . Churoh , who was ably assisted by Broa . J . Lewis Young , Sam Smither , H . G . Holland , and G . W . Knight .

THE usual monthly meeting of this Lodge was held on Wednesday , tbe 16 th ult ., by permission , at tbe Great Eastern Hotel , Liverpool Street , instead of the obsolete Town Hall , Shoreditoh . James' Lodge , No . 1579 , whioh was done in a most impressive and earnest manner by Bro . Christian the W . M . The routine bnsiness being ended , the Lodge adjourned to a most excellent

banquet , served and suparintended by the hotel manager , whioh gave great satisfaction . The usual loyal and other toasts were given and received by the brethren and responded to in a true Masonio spirit , and the evening brought to a close by admirable speeches aud tongs , all of the brethren expressing their great gratification at their new home , trusting it would be lasting .
