ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR BOYS .

THE regular Monthly Council was held on Friday , 27 th December , at Freemasons' Hall , Bro . Eichard Eve in the chair , and there were also present Brothers Keyser Treasurer , Lefeuvre , Fitzgerald , Glass , Fairchild , Strachan , McQueen , Pulroan , Cumminss , Stephens , and Mickley .

After the usual routine business , the report of the Petitions Committee was considered . Eleven Petitions were accepted and two deferred . Two cases were rejected , one on the ground that as the boy was born twenty-one years after the Father had ceased to be a subscribing Mason it could ' not be considered as

coming within the objects of the Institution . It was incidentally mentioned that a Petition on behalf of the sister of the Candidate was similarly rejected by the General Committee of the Girls School on the previous day . The List for the April election was then closed with fifty-one Candidates , and the Quarterly Court was recommended to elect twenty-eight Boys therefrom .

A grant of £ 10 was made for an ex-pupil s advancement . In the report of the proceedings of the Board of Management it was named that a satisfactory report of the Examination of the whole School by the Syndicate of the Cambridge University had been received . This reporfc we shall reproduce next week , it being crowded out from our current issue .

BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION .

WE are particularly p leased to be able to make the very gratifying announcement , thus early in the new year , that the Duke of Connaught and Strathearn Past Grand Master Provincial Grand Master of Sussex and District Grand Master of

Bombay , has consented to preside at the festival to celebrate the fifty-fifth anniversary of this Institution , to be held in February of next year . We tender our hearty congratulations to the Secretary and others interested in the work , on the good fortune that appears to be in store for the Fund .

The installation meeting of the Domatic Lodge , No . 177 , will be held on Friday next , at Anderton ' s Hotel , Fleet Street , Bro . Thomas Henry Hobbs being the W . M .-elect . In addition to the installation there is a full agenda of business , one Brother

coming forward for the second degree , three gentlemen being candidates for initiation , and one Brother desiring to be admitted as a joining member . We hope to give an account of the meeting in due course .

The old Prince ' s Street Hall , thirty years ago one of two rooms which alone could hold concert parties in Penzance , since used as a billiard-room , is now very much changed and improved . The ground floor has light admitted , and will be made available for Masonic banquets . The stairs to the first floor have been

widened and improved . These now lead fco a Lodge Eoom for the Mount Sinai Freemasons . It is forty feet long , twenty-six feet wide , and twenty-five feet high , and will make a fine Lodge . The second floor has a hall of less size , with ante-rooms , & c , and will be devoted to Arch Masonry . — " Western Mercury . "

There are a variety of opinions on the law of degrees adopted by Grand Lodge of Scotland at the meeting in November , says " The Mallet , " in " Glasgow Evening News , " the two principal of which are that the law comes into force at once , and the other that it does not become law until the minutes are confirmed at

the next meeting of Grand Lodge . The result is . that one finds one Lodge acting on the rule , and another trusting to the more convenient opinion , and , therefore , conducting their work on the old lines . We have only to go back to the time when the fees were increased in proof of the contention that laws come into

force from the moment they are passed . So far as the claim that the laws do not come into operation until the minutes of the meeting of Grand Lodge at which they were adopted are confirmed is concerned , a glance at Grand Lodge rule 42 at once disposes

of that . " Confirmation of minutes of Grand Lodge implies that the res gesta of a previous meeting has been correctly recorded , and not that the questions discussed and disposed of at such former meeting can be opened up at the succeeding one when the minutes are read . "

AT the funeral of Dr . W . L . Pope , afc Highweek , the Freemasons were represented by members of Devon Lodge , of which Dr . Pope was Chaplain , and by Bro . Snelling . THE death occurred on the 30 th ult . of Bro . Edward Bath , Town Clerk of Glastonbury , whose loss to the public life

of Glastonbury will be almost irreparable , and will be keenly felt in many ways for a long time . The Mayor of Wells , at a meeting of the Council , sympathetically alluded to the loss Glastonbury had suffered .

rgHHE remains of Bro . Henry Thomas Hardy , of Southampton , JL who occupied a distinguished position in the Albert Edward Chapter , and died on 2 lst ult ., at the comparatively early age of forty-one years , were interred on the 24 th , in the Southampton Cemetery , his remains being followed to the grave by a number of Brethren .
