THE March Quarterly Communication of Grand Lodge was held on Wednesday , at Freemasons' Hall , London , under the presidency of the Eight Hon . the Earl of Carnarvon Pro Grand Master . Grand Lodge having been opened , the Grand Secretary read the minutes of last Grand Lodge . Bro . Philbrick said : Most Worshipfnl Grand Master , before tho minutes are confirmed may I ask Grand Secretary ,-with regard to the

grant to the Benevolent Institution , what are the f ands at the command of this Grand Lodge ? The Grand Secretary replied that the sum referred to amounted to about -615 , 000 . Bro . Philbrick : Then I rise to move that so much of the minntes as relate to the grant for the Benevolent Institntion be not confirmed .

I cannot bnt think that before this Grand Lodge makes an additional grant of £ 800 a year to tbe Benevolent Institntion , brethren ought to be in a position to know what is the income of Grand Lodge , what are its funds , how those funds aro invested , what is tbe permanent source of revenue ; whether or not , in the position of the Craft , ib is a matter of prudence and propriety to make such a large grant at the

present time . Lately the funds of Grand Lodge have been directed to be placed in Government Stock , and if the amount is £ 15 , 000 oi £ 16 , 000 that -would make an income of something like £ 500 a year . Grand Lodge has already subscribed £ 300 to the Boys' School—( No , no ) — £ 150 to the Boys' School , and a like sum to the Girls' School , and a sum of £ 300 to the Benevolent Institution . The purport of

the original motion was that , tho Funds of Grand Lodge and the Fund of Benevolence should pay an additional £ 800 a year , and I venture to say that no one was moro surprised than the proposer that tliis motion was carried . I feel quite persuaded that many of the brethren who voted for the motion believed that the funds wore very different from tho statement of the Grand Secretary to-uight .

It is quite true that no ono would desire more than this Grand Lodgo that the Institution should bo well supported , and that it should not bo deprived of a single penny , that we could with propriety and prudence grant , but how can we , a body of Masons who charge every initiate entering onr body to let prudence direct his steps , not only give away moro than the actual income of the

property or the fund , but also pledge and mortgage future income , which is , as it were , to draw a bill upon the future ? Is it not right arid fait * before we do so , before we aommit this Grand Lodge to an annual expenditure—to such an expenditure as £ 800 , besides the £ 800 already granted—that wo should havo a statement laid before us .
