Lucie * Claraz , mixing with tho faithful in the church of a little community in tho Gruyere ( Canton of Fribourg ) had approached the Holy Table at Communion time . When fche priest came to her ho stopped short and publicly affronted her by refusing her tho Divine Eucharist . Hence arose a great scandal in this country . This took place in July 1893 .

But the priest had grave reasons for acting thus , and he did nofc hesitate to say so . This person was none other than Grand-11 istress of the Fribourg Lodge " La R . L . la Regeneree , " and people-know of what the sacrilegious practices of a good number of this branch consisted . The " Regeneree " after a long sleep had been awakened by a Fribourg lawyer , father of Mdlle . Lucie Claraz . This was the

" Venerable , " and her mother was instituted Grand Mistress , for the branch was nofc slow in annexing a Lodge of Mason sisters . Base rumours were afloat concerning the society . Near the meeting place was found a notorious inn in a place called " The Great Fountain . " This suspicious house was contiguous to a portion of the long garden attached to the house in which was situated the Mason temple .

Then one fine day fche Lodge got into confusion . The property had been incompletely paid for , tho creditors were unwilling to be longer out of their money . In short , there wero processes , a seizure , and then some fine disclosures were made . The place of meeting comprised two temples perfectly distinct . The first set up in the house looking towards the street was , conformably with general

usage , a pretty large hall devoted to the ordinary meetings of the apprentices , companions , and masters ; the Lodge practised the rite called the " Scotch Rito , " long ago established . But at fche end of tho long and narrow garden there was a second temple , and this was carved in the rock , and decorated in quite a different manner ; ifc was a complete fac-simile of a Catholic chapel , with a nave , high

altar , tribune , organ , stalls , an imitation of the holy table , etc . The symbolicism of the decoration was satanic . The Freemasons had had timo fco take away the greatest part of the accessories necessary to their infernal liturgy ; bufc that which had been forgotten sufficiently betrayed the diabolical worship honoured in this subterranean temple .

Thus there was in the middle of the nave and at some distance from the high altar ( tho idol in which , probably a Baphomot , had been taken away ) a little triangular altar in massive wood , strangely sculptured , scarcely 80 centimetres high , and the base of which was literally riddled with blows like those which would bo made with tho point of a knife or a dagger . Finally—it would take too long to relate the various stages—the purified diabolical chapel , all traces of thc infernal symbolicism having disappeared , has become tho chapel of a convent of Franciscan Friars , who have acquired and transformed the neighbouring houses .

On the other hand , after its misadventures the " La Regeneree " Lodge was reconstituted elsewhere ; it figured two months ago in thc list of Swiss Lodges which has been published by a Berne journal . But in the meantime confessions had been made , and ifc was thus known in what consisted the practices of the Androgyne branch , annexed to the ordinary Lodge . The result of an enquiry on this

subject has been published by M . De la Rire , in his remarkable volume , " The Woman and the Child in Universal Freemasonry , " and M . Huysmans , whose skill in occulfcness is well-known , has entirely confii-med in an interview published by the Matin all that which the eminent Catholic author had revealed . M . This Lodge practised a diabolical rite imported from America , the rite of the Patriarchal Old Fellows , called the second class or the perfect initiation . In this rite a sacrilegious office is celebrated , called " Adonaicide Mass , " and conceived by the Grand Master Holbrook , of Charleston , one of the predecessors of the famous Albert Pike , who was instituted Sovereign Pontiff of Universal

Freemasonry . This dark Mass is characterised , not only by the profanation of the consecrated Catholic Host , pierced with dagger blows upon the little triangular altar , but also by the communion of black hosts , which the officiating Grand Patriarch consecrates to Lucifer . MM . de la Rire and Huysmans have also made known this significant detail : It is thafc the garb of the Mason sisters present at this sacrilegious ceremony is " the costume of Eve before the fall . "

Mile . Lucie Claraz , being well known at Fribourg saw , it can be easily understood , how she was avoided as soon as it was known that she was the Grand Mistress of the La Regeneree Lodge Nevertheless , she excelled in audacity , and scandalised the city more than ever in daring , on Sunday , to enter the church and communicate there . The faithful were at once indignant and consternated , for according to regulations the priest who is on

The formal refusal of the Host put the Grand Mistress of Fribourg in a fury ; sho lodged a complaint against the priest , and claimed from him ten thousand francs damages to repair , as she said , tho injury that the public affront and the explanations of tho venerable priest had caused to her reputation . In reality what she wished was to get legalised by legal decision the right of sacrilegious Communion ; she pursued with unheard-jf-fiereeness her execrable project .

The first court , the District Tribune , sitting at Bulle , decided Mile . Lucie Claraz to be in the wrong . The Grand Mistress of Fribourg immediately appealed from ifc to the Cantonal Tribunal , which hastened to confirm the decree of the judge in the first instance . Not considering herself to be beaten , Lucie Claraz immediately remitted the decree of the Fribourg magistrates to the Federal Tribunal , which is tho supremo judiciary authority in Switzerland .

The case was tried on the 27 fch April last , and lasted more than six hours . Although Protestants for most part , the judges unanimously declared the conduct of tho priest to be lawful . Consequently the Grand Mistress Lucie Claraz is definitely done with her complaint and her demand for damages ; besides , she has been ordered to pay all fche costs of the case .
