worked hard fpr the sacred causa of Charity , and it was unanimously hoped that he might long bo spared to wear this handsome memento of a most remarkable year . The accessions to Masonry during his year of office had exceeded those of his predecessors in any of the past twenty years , and the Past Master ' s jewel was voted to him out of the Lodge funds as a mark of esteem and respect , and in appreciation of his services as W . M . during the past year , he being the twenty-seventh Master of the King Harold Lodge since its consecration by Bro . Terry , on 27 th September 1870 .

Bro . Metcalfe is a man of deeds rather than words , but he found sufficient ; eloquent language to express his hearfelt thanks to the Brethren for the unvaried kindness and support they had given him during his year o £ office . . . It was resolved that a testimonial be presented to Bro . Thomas Beilly

P . M ., in consideration of his long services to the Lodge as Secretary , and that ten guineas be taken from the Lodge funds , and supplemented by voluntary contributions , in furtherance of that object , Bro . Beilly being shortly about to lay down the Secretary's pen , and seek that rest which his advanced age amply justifies .

Bro . John Mark P . M ., and Bro . Charles Lacey P . M . P . P . G . D . spoke in support of the motion , stating that they had known Bro . Beilly as Secretary for many years . The motion was put and carried unanimously , and a Committee consisting of the W . M ., I . P . M ., Treasurer and other Past Masters was asked if they would kindly carry out the intention of the resolution . The Lodge was then closed , and the Brethren retired to a banquet , served up in Bro . 3- W . , Nash ' s well known enjoyable style .

The usual Loyal and Masonic toasts were given and responded to , and the evening was enlivened by vocal and instrumental music .

LONGSIGHT LODGE , No . 2464 . UPON the first regular meeting after the three months recess the proceedings in connection with this Lodge were honoured by the presence of Bro . Capt . Clement B . N . Beswicke-Boyds Deputy Provincial Grand Master who , in spite of the miserable weather , put iu an early appearance and witnessed an initiation . Other distinguished visitors were also present .

The name of Bro . Joseph Bichardsori , Longsight , a former member of the Ashbury Lodge , No . 1459 , was submitted to the ballot , and being successful , he was admitted as a joining member . An election of Officers afterwards took place , with the result that Bro . Hy . Sheard S . W . was unanimously chosen as W . M .-elect .

An adjournment was made to rooms in the immediate neighbourhood , where the Brethren were joined by their lady friends , a very pleasant evening being spent .

to time , and the minutes of the last meeting ( which contained reference to an outlay for a wreath as a tribute of respect for a deceased member , Bro . Chas . The LoJge was opened in tho second and third degrees , and the ceremony of raising was most effectively rehearsed , including the traditional history and full explanation of the tracing bmrd . After resuming in the first degree the ceremony of initiation was also well rendered , Bro . Harry Wright being the candidate .

Bro . Amaio was unanimously elected W . M . for the ensuing week . The usefulness of this Lodge , which is almost unique as being an afternoon , instead of an evening one , is manifested , says the " South London Observer , " by the numerous attendance of its members , and this at a timo of the year when many Lodges close down for the summer season . It is so weil Officered that such a result cannot be wondered at , and our contemporary anticipates for it a very useful future .

MARE ! MASONRY

GRANVILLE LODGE , No . 390 . A MEETING was held at the Masonic Bjoms , Park S ; reet , Deal , on Tuesday , 17 th ult ., when Bro . H . G . Frost W . M . presided . Bro . J . W . Court P . M . subsequently assumed the chair , and performed the ceremony of advancement in a very able manner .

The Harmony Lodge , No . 156 , Plymouth , has commemorated the Queen ' s long and glorious reign by sending to the Hon . Treasurer ( Mr . W . H . Alger ) of the South Devon ancl Bast Cornwall Hospital , through their Charity Steward , Bro . Charles

Stuart Stebbing , a cheque for twenty-live guineas , to secure a life governorship of the hospital , and the name of Mrs . Charles Stuart Stebbing , wife of the present W . M . and Charity Steward , has been placed on the list of life governors , as desired by the Lodge .

One of the distinguishing characteristics of Freemasonry , says the " Keystone , " in all times past , has been its absolute independence , its sturdy purpose never to seek to proselyte or make friends of the profane . This is a part of the unwritten law of the Craft—a branch of the Masonic law which we should

most carefully conserve . Notwithstanding , therefore , you may not be able to find it asserted in any printed Constitutions of Freemasonry that a Brother may not ask a profane to be made a Mason , this is as much the law of Masonry as if it were formally

enacted . It is a , part of the unwritten law , which it is not permissible to transgress . And yet this law is shamefully violated every day , and simply that dollars may be added to the coffers of the Lodge . This transgression of law will bririg'its own punishment in the destruction of the beautiful edifice .
