Jill Books intended for Beview should be addressed to the Editor of The Freemason ' s Chronicle , Belvidere "Works , Hermes Hill . Pentonville , London , N . : 0 : Morality . An Essay on Some Points thereof ( addressed to Young Men ) . By Maurice Charles Hime , M . A ., LL . D . ( Barrister-at-Law ) , Head Master of Foyle College , Londonderry . Ninth edition , revised and enlarged . London : Messrs . J . and A . Churchill , 11 New Bnrlington-street , W ., and all Booksellers . 1881 .

MANT , no doubt , will consider Bro . Dr . Hime a very bold man to have grappled thus publioly with the greatest of all the questions whioh affect pnblio morals , namely , the natnralness or non-naturalness of fornication . It is a question which every person would avoid discussing , if possible , and it is also one which , in the very nature of things , it is impossible to ignore . No one can reach a nubile age

without disoovoring that he or she possesses what Dr . nime calls certain " propensions , " that is , lusts of the flesh , and it is clearly of vital importance that it shonld be impressed on his or her mind , as solemnly and as soon as possible , that it is in accordance with tho laws of Natnre and of Reason that these propensions should bo held in oontrol . If pains were taken to make this clear to our yonth of

both sexes , it is tolerably certain the standard of morality would be higher than it is , but the instances are rare in which anything of the kind is attempted . There are so many people who delude themselves into the belief that it is better young people shonld be kept in ignorance of the existence of certain evils , of which sooner or later they are snre to obtain some knowledge , than that the evils

themselves , being in their very nature offensive to ears polite , and the best means of avoiding them , should be explained . Dr . Hime is not one of these , and having taken counsel with people whose avocations qualify them to offer an opinion on the expediency or otherwise of the course he proposed to follow , he has had the gratification of learning from them , or sundry of them , that they were strongly in favour of its

being adopted . Having thus fore-armed himself against the expostulations of those weak-minded people who think the discussion of immoral questions must be conducted only in the midst of immoral surroundings , the author at once plunges into his subject and grapples successfully with the various false arguments adduced in defence of immorality , such as " that it is natural , " that " it is a

matter of no great consequence whether one exceeds a little in his youth or not , & o . " and " what of marriage ? Is not marriage Conducive to one ' s health—continence injurious to it ? " and that " so far as the woman is concerned , there is , at all events , no need of discussion : to her it can make no difference , what worse could she be ? " These are considered in the first three ohapters and in the

fourth are submitted " four safeguards against immorality , " namely " Prayer , " " avoidance of temptation , " " moderation in the use of Intoxicating Drinks , " and " Occupation . " The tone which prevails throughout is admirable and the arguments , fortified as they are , hy almost innumerable quotations and illustrations from the most famous ethical authorities , are irrefutable . Our zealous and able

brother has done well to publish his book—the public think so at all events , for eight previous editions have already been exhausted and rendered the issue of a ninth imperative—and we earnestly advise our readers to obtain a copy and study it most carefully . It cannot fail to exercise a wholesome influence on them , and those with whom

they may he brought into more or less frequent contact . It is a work , the fame of which deserves to bo made known in all directions , and we do not hesitate to say we shall rejoice unaffectedly if ever it is our good fortune to learn that what is now the ninth has become the ninetieth edition .

he Monde Maconnique for August-September contains an account of the General Assembly of the Grand Orient of France , which opened on Monday , the 8 fch September , and continued its sittings till the end of the week , the proceedings concluding with the customary banquet . The moat important of the Assembly ' s labours appears to have been the revision of the Constitutions , which was accomplished in the

course of three sittings . From the report of the Council of the Grand Orient it appears ^ hat the bodies which render it obedience number 345 as against 329 at the corresponding period last year . Among the other contents is a long and interesting memorandum by the Supreme Council of the A . and A . Rite . From the foreign news we

learn that Bro . Professor Damaskenos has been elected Grand Master of the Grand Orient of Greece for the triennial period 1884-7 , and Bros . Galvani ,. Professor , and Karais-Kakis , ex-Minister of War , Deptuy Grand Masters . We learn from the same sonrce that Bro . Moroiu , Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Roumania , is dead .

The Burdett-Contts Lodge of Instruction has been removed from the Dnke ' s Head , Whitechapel , to the SwaD Tavern , New Bethnal Green-road , where meetings will be held on every Thursday evening , at 8 p . m . A cordial welcome will be extended to any brother who may honour the Lodge with his attendance .

HotLOWAl's Puts . —Any dyspeptic sufferer aware , of tho purifying regulating , and gently aperient powers of these Pills , should permit no one tn cloud his judgment or to warp his course . With a box of Holloway ' s Pills and attention to its accompanying " Directions , " he may feel thoroughly satisfied that he can safely and offectually release himself from his miseries without impairing his appelito or weakening his digestion . This most excellent medicine " acts as a nervine and bodily tonic hy aiding nutrition , and banishes a thousand annoying forms of nervous complaints . An occasional resort to Holloway ' s remedy will prove highly salutary to all persons , whether well or ill , whoso digestion is slow or imperfect , a condition usually evidenced by weariness , languor , iisfclessness and dsspondenoy .
