The following letter appears in the Glasgow Herald of the 26 th inst * -

47 George Street , Edinburgh , 25 th September 1890 . Sir , —My attention has been called to a paragraph in the Herald of the 23 rd inst . reporting a meeting of a body calling itself " The Grand Encampment of fche Temple in Scotland , " in which it is stated that a committee of its members was appointed " to meat and confer

with a committee appointed by the Supreme Royal Arch Chapter of Scotland as to the union of the two bodies npon the Royal Arch degree . " This would seem to imply that the Supreme Chapter had appointed a committee for that purpose . The facts of the case are these : —A oommnnication was made to the Supreme Chapter proposing to join ifc . This came before the committee of the Supreme Chapter , of which I am President . As I had never even heard of

the existence of snch a body as the " Early Grand Chapter " or of " The Grand Encampment of the Temple in Scotland , " I got a subcommittee appointed for the purpose of inquiring into the character of the body in the first place , and the conference was to follow if all was satisfactory . Sovereign Masonic bodies in Scotland only confer with those recognised as lawful , not with unrecognised organisations , hence the precautions taken to keep the Supreme Chapter right . 1 am , & o . Following np their successful plan of presenting complete copies of well-known works of fiction to the readers of Cassell's Saturday Jmirnal , the publishers decided to give away with Nos . 365 and 366 , ready on 24 th September and lst October respectively , the wellknown story of adventure by Q ., called " Dead Man ' s Rock . " No . 365

Mr . William Black , " illustrated ; " How the Pope is Elected ;" " Odd Doings of Lunatics ; " " Not to be Killed" ( a true story of adventure ) ; Humorous Illustrations b y Frederick Barnard and J . F . Sullivan , & c .

A propos of Mr . Gladstone ' s letter to Sir Robert Ball respecting his popular works on astronomy— " Star Land , " and "The Story of the Heavens "—we learn that a third edition of the former work has alread y been called for since its publication last autumn , whilst a popular edition of the latter will be issued by Messrs . Cassell and Company at the end of the present mouth .

Messrs . Cassell and Company have recently published a work , entitled "Loudon Street Arabs , " by Mrs . Henry M . Stanley ( Doroth y Tennant ) , containing a collection of her characteristic sketches of London street life . By way of introduction , Mrs . Stanley relates some experiences of "Arab" life , furnishes information as fco the mode adopted in making her sketches , aud narrates various anec dotes respecting her ragamuffin models .

A propos of Mr .
