Grand Lodge Scotland.

GRAND LODGE SCOTLAND .

THE Hon . James Hosier , M . P ., has been nominated as the Grand Master Mason of Scotland , in succession to Lord Saltoun , who retires after having been three years in office .

Bro . W . Wellsman P . M ., C . C ., ha ? been elected chairman of the Brondesbury Conservative Association . o o O Earl Amherst Pro G . M . will preside at the half-yearly general meeting of the British Home for Incurables , at the Cannon Street Hotel , on Tuesday , the 14 th inst .

The Sympathy Lodge of Instruction , No . 4 83 , has practically demonstrated its name by a grant of five guineas towards the fund now being raised for the Widows and Children of the brave men who are fighting for their country in South Africa .

We are informed that M . Paderewski has announced his intention of giving a concert in London at the end of this month , the entire proceeds of which will be devoted to the

Patriotic Fund . All the Artistes will give their services , and several ladies of high rank have promised to sell the programmes on the occasion .

Few members of the Mark degree have a longer record of service than Bro . Magnus Ohren , who was invested as Treasurer , at the recent meeting of the Bon Accord Lodge ,

for the twenty-fourth successive year . We hope our esteemed Brother maybe spared for many more years to give the Craft and other degrees the benefit of his knowledge and experience .

The Brethren of Devonshire are taking a leading part in the congratulations showered upon Sir Stafford Northcote , Bart ., M . P ., Prov . G . M . Devonshire , on his appointment as

Governor of Bombay , and we believe their congratulations are endorsed by Brethren in all parts of the country , who delight to see any of the leaders of the Craft thus promoted in the service of the Empire .

We commend the circular letter addressed by Sir Stafford Northcote Prov . G . M . Devonshire to his Brethren , as to the Red Cross Fund , and which we reproduce

elsewhere in this issue , to other districts and Brethren generally throughout the country . As Sir Stafford says , a large number of our Masonic Brethren are among those who will

Grand Lodge Scotland.

participate in the good offices of the Red Cross Society , and the same may be said with equal truth of the wounded among the enemy who may fall into our hands . 000 At a recent meeting of the J ustice Lodge , No . 147—now

over a century old—held at the Ship , Greenwicn , the W . M . Bro . David Drynan presented the Secretary Bro . Walter E . Dilley , in the name of the Brethren , with a handsome pianoforte ( by Brinsmead ) and an illuminated address as a token

of the very high esteem in which he is held by them , and in acknowledgment of the services he has rendered to the Lodge and the Craft during the last nine years . Bro . Dilley , in

returning thanks , alluded to the fact that his father was initiated in the Lodge of Justice forty years ago , and occupied its chair .

The closing year of the century should be a red letter one to Bro . John Nathaniel Willis , since it marks some of the most interesting events in his life . After being a Freemason for several years he was elected , and recently installed ,

Worshipful Master of his Lodge , Sympathy , No . 483 ; he was one of the first exaltees in the Chapter in connection with the Lodge ; and now his colleagues on the Town Council of the ancient Borough of Gravesend have

unanimously elected him to preside over them during the ensuing year . We greet him with hearty good wishes upon his appointment , and cordially hope he may have a successful year of office in both capacities .

The numerous body of Freemasons who freqiient the Temple in Hope Street , Liverpool , have reason to feel proud of the success of their club library , says the "Liverpool Mercury . " Two years ago the nucleus consisted of a few

small books , and now there are over 200 volumes , whose literary quality is evident . Literature of the Craft ,, quaintly ancient and strictly modern , is well represented , but , as might be expected from the rulers of the club and- the

honorary librarian ( Bro . Captain Macnab ) , there is also a goodly assortment of useful works of reference , and treatises upon various arts and sciences . The aim has been not only

to furnish good readable matter , but to place at the command of members technical books of information in various businesses , Bro . R . Ripley being a most generous contributor to what is becoming an invaluable collection .

A presentation was made to Bro . James Kaye P . P . G . D . C , at the Masonic Hall , Huddersfleld , last month , in recognition of his thirty years association with the Lodge of Harmony , No . 275 , and his services to the Lodge and on

behalf of Masonry in Huddersfleld generally . The presentation consisted of a life-sized portrait , in oils , of the recipient , and it was made on behalf of the members by the W . M . The portrait was accompanied by an interesting souvenir of

the occasion in book form , . containing on one side a photographic reproduction of the picture , and on the other a few words of congratulation to Bro . Kaye , signed on behalf

of the Lodge by the Worshipful Master and the Secretary . Bro . Kaye acknowledged the presentation , and returned the portrait to the Worshipful Master , expressing the hope that it might long hang upon the walls of the Masonic Hall , in which he had spent some of the happiest hours of his life .

Lyric . —It is always pleasant to receive the exponents o £ the dramatic art from all countries , especially in a form of entertainment in which we consider ourselves proficient , and therefore the visit of Mr . De Wolf Hopper and his company from New York is exceedingly interesting . He brings with him a comic opera in three acts , entitled , " El Capitan , " the music of which is by Mr . 3 . P . Sousa , and the words by Mr . Charles Klein . The plot is laid in Peru during the time of the Spanish possession , and narrates the adventures

of the bombastic Don Brrico Modigna , the very unpopular Viceroy , who to save himself from the unpleasant results of a revolution , disguises himself as the heroic Captain , and joins the insurgents . The complications that ensue are exceedingly amusing , especially where he , being a married man , finds himself betrothed to the rebel leader's daughter , while his wife and daughter come to the prison where he is supposed to be incarcerated , and he has to explain as best he may the peculiar position . Of course all comes right in the end , but the story gets a trifle thin towards the last act . The burden of

the piece rests upon Mr . Hopper himself , who does full justice to the character , while he is very ably supported by Mesdames Alice Hosmer and Nella Bergen , as the wife and daughter ; Mr . Henry Norman , as the ex-Viceroy , leading the revolution ; Mr . Harold Blake , as Count Hernando , who pairs off with Isabel , the daughter ; together with Mr . Melville Stewart and Miss Jessie Mackaye , who represent the other pair of lovers . The music is bright and lively—the choruses being especially good and sung by a well trained choir—while the scenery and costumes leave nothing to be desired , The play has been removed to the Comedy Theatre .
