UNITED GRAND LODGE .
THE regular Quarterly Communication of Grand Lodge was held at Freemasons' Hall , London , on Wednesday , under the presidency of Bro . W . W . B . Beach , M . P ., Provincial Grand Master Hampshire and the Isle of Wight , who was supported by Bro . T . F . Halsey , M . P ., Prov . G . M . Herts as Pro G . M ., W . A . Francis Powell as Deputy G . M .,
the Earl of Portarlington and Sir J . B . Monckton Wardens . Grand Lodge was opened in due form , prayer being offered b y the Rev . C . J . Martyn P . G . C . After the reading of the minutes the Acting G . M . rose and proposed—at the request of H . R . H . the Prince of Wales Grand Master—a
vote of sympathy with Lord Lathom in the great calamity which had befallen him in-the death of his Countess . Bro . Beach knew that words were powerless to alleviate affliction , but sympathy was dear to the afflicted , and no sympathy could be more earnest than that of the Freemasons towards their beloved Pro Grand Master . The manner in which
Lord Lathom ruled the Craft could never be forgotten—he won the esteem of all with whom he came in contact . Many of those present had been associated with the Earl of Lathom in past years , but he hoped one and all would assent to the resolution he submitted , that Grand Lodge desires to express its sympathy with the Pro Grand Master in his great affliction .
The motion was seconded b y Bro . Halsey , supported by the Rev . C . J . Martyn , and carried with every appearance of the greatest sincerity . Bro . Surgeon Lieut .-Colonel Kiallmark , Royal Bucks
Hussars , P . M . 16082033 , & c . nominated His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales for re-election as Grand Master for the ensuing twelve months , the hearty reception of the nomination giving evidence of the continued loyalty and devotion of the Craft to the Prince of Wales .
Bro . William Woodward P . M . Eurydice Lodge , No . 1920 P . P . G . Superintendent of Works Surrey nominated Lieut .-Colonel Probyn for the office of Grand Treasurer for the coming year , and , in doing so , reminded the Brethren that Bro . Probyn withdrew from his candidature on the last
occasion , so as to avoid a competition for the appointment . Bro . Probyn had displayed great interest in the work of Freemasonry , having taken an active part in the establishment of some recently consecrated Lodges , while he was a working
member of several others , Patron of all three Institutions , and well qualified for the position . In conclusion , Bro . Woodward cordially recommended Colonel Probyn for the suffrages of the Brethren .
United Grand Lodge.
Items four , five , six , and seven on the Agenda ( given in our last issue ) were disposed of in regular sequence and then the Report of the Board of General Purposes came on for consideration , the Report being taken . as read , adopted and entered on the minutes .
The President of the Board Bro . Loveland-Loveland formally moved the resolution recommended by the Board in regard to the salary of the esteemed Grand Secretary Bro . Letchworth . In doing so he stated that prior to his appointment as the official of Grand Lodge Bro . Letchworth
was a solicitor in large practice , and held several appointments of great value , all of which he relinquished , in order that he could devote the whole of his time to the work of his office in the Craft . Bro . Letchworth had held his appointment for six years , and the time had now arrived for the Brethren
to re-consider his position . The work of the Grand Secretary ' s office had greatly increased—the letters by some 60 per cent ., the postage from £ 190 to £ 270—while the large number of new Lodges and Chapters , in London , the Provinces and in outside Districts , had added greatly to the
work ; while , in addition , Bro . Letchworth was frequently called upon to advise on Masonic matters in all parts of the world . Bro . Loveland-Loveland concluded by reading a letter from the Grand Registrar Bro . Philbrick , recommending the proposed increase , and the motion was regularly seconded .
Bro . Richard Eve P . G . Treas . asked the Brethren not to vote on the subject that night , such short notice having been g iven to the Craft of the proposal , which was a very large increase , and ought not to be granted without a perfect knowledge of all the facts of the case . The late Bro .
Shadwell Gierke had only received . £ " 1 , 000 a year , after eleven years service . In 1873 , when a proposition was made that the salaries should be raised , it was suggested that the Provinces should be consulted . Bro . Eve went on to refer
to the state of the income of Grand Lodge at the present time , and the amount paid for clerical assistance ; and also reviewed the number of Lodges now in existence , pointing out that , after all , there was no such great increase as to justify the proposed addition .
Bro . Baskett endorsed the views of his patron , and seconded the motion " as a matter of form . " Bro . Sir John B . Monckton then rose . He did not wish to go through Brother Eve ' s arguments as to Brother Shadwell Gierke ' s appointment , but he might mention that
the late Secretary was in the enjoyment of a pension of £ 500 per annum , as a half pay Officer from the army . There was a numerous assemblage of Brethren present that night , and he doubted whether they could have a more representative or more intelligent assembly if they waited until the spring .
The vote of Grand Lodge was then taken , and the original proposition of the Board of General Purposes carried with acclamation ' , and on the return of Brother Letchworth . into Grand Lodge he was received with such hearty applause as proved his great popularity in the Craft .
Bro . Lamonby brought forward the proposition that he has so long had before the Craft , in reference to the prohibition of canvassing by or on behalf of candidates for office in Grand Lodge , and his motion was seconded by Bro . Rev . R . J . Simpson P . G . C , and opposed by Dr . Egan
( South Africa ) and James Stephens . Bro . Wm . Russell moved an amendment limiting the prohibition to personal canvass by candidates , and this view of the question was endorsed by Bro . Devine , but eventually the proposition met the fate it so richly deserved , being lost by a large majority , and we hope we have heard the last of" Bro . Lamonby ' s
Quixotic scheme , although , as we have frequently pointed out , there is ample room for someone to approach the subject and submit a proposal with some semblance of a possibility of its working . The appeal of Bro . Horley 1341 was dismissed .
Before the proceedings were concluded Bro . Sir Joseph Dimsdale P . G . Treas . handed to the Grand Secretary a cheque for £ 242 10 s , consisting of guinea subscriptions from Lodges to the Guy ' s Hospital Fund . Grand Lodge was subsequently closed . .
The Archdeacon of Essex , who held the office of Grand Chaplain in 1896-7 , has arranged to act as Chaplain to a special party of Freemasons who will visit Palestine and Egypt in Mr . Woolrycb Perowue ' s yacht , the ss . Midnight Sun , at the end of January . The Archdeacon hopes that permission may be obtained from Grand Lodge for a Lodge to be held in Solomon ' s Quarries , outside of the Damascus Gate of Jerusalem .
