— : o : — INCREASE OF PROVINCIAL HONOURS . To the Editor of the FREEMASON ' S CHRONICLE . SIR , —I hope you wei-e not seriously disconcerted by the disingenuous " astonishment" of " Harmony" that you should lend the aid of your columns to a discussion on ' the above subject . So long , Sir , ns you conduct your journal with tne marked ability which has ever been its conspicuous feature it will remain , facile princeps , our best Masonic medium , even though you do spare a little space for my humble communications .

As " Harmony " suspects my identity , and I feel pretty certain of his , I do not see the necessity for breaking through our anonymity . If this subject of Prov . honours is worthy of our attention , let us , as Masons , consider it . on its merits , uninfluenced by any personal considerations ; though it is only fair to your readers and yourself . Sir . to add that I am neither an officeseeker myself , nor ( as " Harmony " with such taste and delicacy has judged me to be ) am I the advocate , interested or otherwise , of the claims of another .

For the concrete consideration of the subject I confine myself to the Province of West Lancashire . It is idle to maintain that , in this large Province , merit is now adequately rewarded . The M . W . P . G . M admits that such is not the case . How , then , can improvement best be effected 1 I find amongst us advocates for the division of this unwieldy Province into two , or the division of the two Lancashire Provinces into three . This , if it could be effected , would undoubtedly relieve matters considerably . Others , again , advocate a radical alteration in the method of selecting the names to be

submited to the M . W . P . G . M . for P . G . honours ; and would prefer to see tho selections mado by vote in the Craft Lodges of the Province .- If , Sir , by your permission I may be allowed to ask that abler pens than mine should come forward and lay before your readers some welj-considered suggestions or schemes , calculated to achieve the end wo have in view , I shall be amply rewarded ; and will no longer obtrude myself before your , readers on a subject ¦ on which there are so many better able to speak than Yours , & c , WEST LANCS .
