Through the kindness of the Worshipful Master and Brethren of the St . Germain Lodge , No . 566 , Selby , a social gathering was held in the Public Booms , on Friday evening , 28 th ulfc ., fco which the wives , sisters , and especially the children of the Brethren ,

were invited . The programme included tea , Christmas tree and games for the children , magic lantern , music and Cinderella dance , all of which were gone through in a very creditable manner . The gathering was of an interesting and pleasing character , says

the " Goole Times , " and the small band of local musicans kept excellent time . The evening proved most enjoyable—the Cinderella dance being a feature—and many wishes were expressed that the event would become an annual one .

The late Emperor William and the Emperor Frederick III . were Freemasons ; and , as is generelly known , the various Lodges are in touch wifch one another all over fche world . A first duty of Freemasons is the maintenance of peace , the avoiding of strife by

another , and fche French Lodges more especially endeavoured to bring the campaign to an end by writing to the Emperor William on the subject , to remind him that the shedding of blood was contrary to the humane principles of Masonry . But the war was fought out to the bitter end , and the result has been that French

and German Lodges are on cool terms . This does not mean that a French Mason would not visit a German Lodge , and vice versa ; but the cordiality that formerly existed has been destroyed for the time being . This shows how even persons with the best intentions are powerless when circumstances , such as those of the war of 1870 , are against them . — " Vanity Fair . "

o o 0 The members of the St . Kew Lodge , Weston-super-Mare , displayed their usual kindness this year to the aged poor of the

town , upwards of 330 of whom were entertained at a " high tea " on the eve of the new year . Subsequently a miscellaneous entertainment was given , and very much appreciated by those who were present .

o o o The Prince of Wales , as Grand Master of English Freemasons , has constituted the Transvaal a separate Masonio district , and has appointed Brother George Bichards , of Johannesburg , who for thirty years has held a leading position in that quarter , its first Master .

REVIEWS .

Books intended for "Review should be addressed to the Editor . "Freemason ' s Chronicle , " New Barnet . — : o : — Freemasons' Calendar and Pocket Book , for the year 1895 . ( London : George Kenning , price 2 s ) . AN innovation , small in itself , yet a marked improvement , especially to

those who , like ourselves , are continually referring to the Grand Lodge Calendar , has been introduced into this year ' s edition , in the form of head lines to the different pages , so that one may see at a glance which section of the book is open . In other respects the well known work remains in the same form as it has appeared for years past , and doubtless experience will in due courso prove the usual correctness of the information it contains .
