Fisher , who , in the course of his remarks , said that the Zion Lodge was the only one which the D . P . G . M . had consecrated , and probably on that account he had always had a leaning towards it . Speaking of the new Master , he said that
nothing could have given him greater satisfaction than a knowledge that a successor had been found to take his position , and that it was such an one as Bro . Fowden . He further spoke of Bro . Fowden in the highest terms , wished him a successful year ; hoping his Officers would support him and lead him to the success which he deserved .
Bro . Fowden said , in response , that he little thought of attaining the honoured position of Worshipful Master , but he had taken the advice of a prominent Past Master , who , in his early days of Masonry had told him to be faithful to his duties and the reward would follow . It had reached him that day , and he felt proud of the faot . He concluded by heartily thanking tho Brethren for their kindness and consideration to him during his upward progress .
Bro . Board proposed the health of the Installing Master , and took the opportunity of presenting to him on behalf of the Brethren a handsome Past Master ' s jewel , which hore the following inscription : —
Presented to BBO . JOHN FISHER P . M . P . G . S . D ., 12 th December 1894 , In commemoration of valued services rendered to the Zion Lodge , No . 1798 , as well as to the Province of East Lancashire .
Bro . Fisher replied , saying that he felt himself in a very enviable position , but could find no adequate words by which to express his sentiments ' with regard to the unparalleled honour which had been conferred upon him , and which on his part was thoroughly unexpected . The manner and spirit in which the toast had been given and received proved to him that it was not the offspring of a moment . He had no knowledge of having performed
any very extraordinary work , and deprecated generally his own powers as contrasted with those of other Brethren . Tho unexpected tribute which he had received would be treasured by him—it would do much to lengthen his days and increase his enjoyment of Freemasonry—for he knew the wealth and generosity of heart which had prompted the gift . Other toasts followed .
