"V & TE are sorry to record the death of Brother Councillor V V Samuel Irvin Mills P . M . 1077 and 258 4 Provincial Grand Superintendent of Works East Lancashire , which took place on Friday , 21 st ult ., at the age of forty-eight years . Our Brother , of whom it may be said that he literally died
in harness , was on the morning of his seizure in attendance at the Manchester Town Hall , where , in his capacity as representative of Blackley and Moston Ward , he had transacted municipal work in connection with the Parks and Cemeteries Committee , of which he was a member . He was also associated with the Tramways , Improvement , Paving , and Highways Committees .
Immediately preceding lunch he felt somewhat unwell , and retired for the purpose of bathing his throbbing head in cold water . While passing along one of the corridors , he was seen to stagger , and two of the hall attendants immediately ran to his assistance , placing him in a chair .
He lapsed into a state of unconsciousness , from which he did not recover , and by direction of Dr . Niven , medical officer of health , whose rooms are in the building , he was conveyed to his home , Green Mount , Queen ' s Park , in a dying condition , the final dissolution occurring shortly after nine the same
evening . His end was sudden and unexpected , a visitation of sorrow in the midst of placid serenity ; there was no premonition of coming danger , no indication of the intangible presence of Azrael , for on his way to the Town Hall upon
the fateful morning he had told a Brother Freemason that he never felt better in his life . As illustrating the excellent state of health which he was then enjoying it may be stated that on the previous Monday he , together with Bro . Thomas Hamnett ( a member of the Manchester Board of Guardians ) ,
was present at the annual meeting of the Duchess of York Lodge , No . 2482 , when Bro . Councillor Philip Whyman was installed Worshipful Master . In responding as a . visitor , Bro . Mills jocularly said he hoped to be present in the same
room on the following Monday at a similar ceremony , when another of their visiting Brethren of that evening ( Bro . Hamnett ) would be installed into the principal chair of the Minnehaha Minstrel Lodge .
The remains were interred at the Southern Cemetery , Withington , on Wednesday , 26 th October , the cortege leaving our deceased Brother ' s residence at 12 ' 30 for Albert Square , where the mourners were joined by a large contingent of municipal representatives and officials of the
Corporation . We may mention that along the line of route the streets were occasionally thronged with spectators , the number of carriages in the procession amounting to over thirty , two of these being filled with floral tokens of respect , the latter on arrival at the cemetery being taken inside the chapel , which , for a short period they adorned .
Among the principal mourners were : —First carriage , the Rev . Charles Fenwick Ward , Rector of Albert Memorial Church , Queen ' s Road , where Bro . Mills had officiated as sidesman ; the Rev . W . Coghlan , Rector of Blackley , where , previous to his removal to Queen ' s Park , our deceased
Brother was m regular attendance . These clergymen conducted the funeral service . Second carriage , Mr . Daniel Mills , Bro . Thos . Hamnett W . M . 2363 brother-in-law , Messrs . Walter Mills and William Mills nephews , G . F . Hamnett and Bro . E . A . W . Wragge . Third carriage , Mr .
Councillor Biggs , Messrs . T . Wilson , J . Faulkner , and S . Wainwright . Fourth carriage , Bros . William Richardson , Thos . Nesbitt , W . Moulton , andWm . B . Midgley . Fifth carriage , Messrs . Councillor George Needham , Bro . J . Howarth , G . Littlewood , and J . H . Axon . Sixth carriage ,
Messrs . Sykes , Holmes , Hibbert , Ellor , and Sherwin . Seventh carriage , Messrs . Foster , Higginbotham , and Wigley . The private carriages of T . Ellis , Esq ., and Dr . Paton followed . The Manchester Corporation was represented by the following Aldermen and Councillors , viz ., Messrs .
Ashcroft , Ashton , Bowes , Briggs , Chadwick , Bro * . Dr . W . F . Dearden J . D . 236 3 , Dixon , H . Grimshaw , Bro . Hampson , Bro . Thos . Hassall 1083 , W . Holland , Jones , Maben , Milnes , Bro . J . Phythian P . M . 2464 , Sutton , Taylor , Bro . Stephen

On reaching the gates of the cemetery a procession was formed , this being augmented by a number of Masonic friends representing Lodges , and by others who attended in a private capacity , the whole numbering something like 500 persons . Among the members ofthe Wilton Lodge , where Bro . Mills
