Devonshire Benevolence.

DEVONSHIRE BENEVOLENCE .

A MEETING of the General Purposes Committee of the Devon Masonic Educational . Fund was held on Wednesday , 3 rd inst ., at the Freemasons' Hall , Plymouth , for the purpose of deciding on the number of candidates , if any , to be placed on the fund at the . election in April . Bro . C . Stuart Stebbing W . M . 156 presided .

The Hon . Treasurer Bro . Lord reported that there were nineteen children on the fund , afc a cost of £ 285 per annum , thafc the net profit on the recent concert in . Plymouth Guildhall , including sums voted by several Lodges , was £ 104 , and thafc the Fund was now worth £ 1 , 716 . *

There was a difference of opinion as to whether two or three children should be elected in April , but in view of the fact stated by the Hon . Secretary that there would be at least six ,

and probably seven candidates , seeking election , it was decided , on the motion of Bro . C . Mutten , seconded by Bro . C . Piper , to elect three . The annual meeting and election will be held on the first Wednesday in April .

THE Aged Widows' Annuity Fund was started in August last by the Freemasons of Devon , with a view to aid deserving cases which for various reasons were unlikely to be successful in obtaining help from the central charities of the Order in London .

On Wednesday , 24 th ulfc ., fche donors and subscribers met in the Freemasons' Hall , Plymouth , to appoint the Officers for the ensuing year , and to elect two aged widows , who will receive an

annuity of £ 20 for life . Brother Major Geo . S . Strode-Lowe , J . P ., presided , and congratulated the meeting on the unexpected success which had attended the establishment of the Fund .

The Treasurer ' s report showed that £ 1 , 200 had been guaranteed , and that £ 600 had been deposited as a reserve in the bank in the names of three trustees . With such a gratifying result it was felt that it would be unwise to make any change in the staff of Officers or of the Executive Committee , and the

whole were therefore re-appointed for fcheensuing twelve months , with the addition of Bros . J . E . Wilson and C . S . Stebbing W . M . 156 as Auditors . There were four candidates for annuities , whose claims were supported by Lodges 105 , 156 , 159 and 666 . The voting resulted in the election of the candidates from Lodges

156 and 159 , who polled 247 votes each . The unsuccessful applicants from Lodges 105 and 666 secured 110 and 29 votes respectively , and those votes are carried forward to the credit

of the candidates at the next election . One of the winning candidates has for twelve years been an unsuccessful applicant for the Eoyal Masonic Benevolent Institution , London . — " Western Morning News . "
