LODGE OF JOPPA , No . 188 . AMON G the first of the Lodges to hold their installation meeting in the new year is the Lodge of Joppa , now in its 110 th year , having been constituted in 1789 . The members pride themselves upon the manner in which the ritual is carried out and the ceremonies worked by their Masters , and it is therefore not to be wondered at that a large number of members " pursued their researches in the direction of Joppa " last Monday , when the annual Festival was held at the Freemasons' Tavern , Great Queen Street

W . C . Bro . Harry Lazarus , for the second time W . M . of the Lodge , presided , and was supported by his Officers and the following Brethren : Henry Sadler G . Tyler , L . J . Aylward 2467 , P . Simon 205 , J . Genese 1540 , Morris Hart 73 , George Liohterfeld 205 , Horatio Saqui 2264 , J . D . Hood 1668 , S . Dancvger 205 , C . J . Greaves 2698 , Henry Massey 1928 , Harry Townend 2265 , P . Phillips 704 , Orlton Cooper 211 , F . A . Phillips 704 , N . S . Lyon 188 , J . F . Saunders 1507 , C . J . Edney 1687 , Ande 6 Hayes 1687 , J . Magnus 1489 , T . S .

Henson 1996 , J . C . Anderson 2411 , Wolfe S . Lyon 185 , W . Young 1601 . There were also present Past Masters A . G . Dodson , J . Garrard , Ernest Davy , Rev . S . J . Roco , and W . J . Gardner ; together with Bros . I . Hand , J . H . Craig , Isaac Silver , James Edwards , J . G . Cross , E . G . Galloway , J .-Mott , M . Jacobs , J . VanBolen , Henry Whitmarsh , W . Jacobs , W . C . Thorpe , H . S . Onken , H . Emanuel , A . Wormald , J . Welzl , A . Levay , W . H . Penfold , E . M . Lazarus , Samuel Silver .

There was quite a long agenda paper for an installation meeting , and the Brethren therefore assembled at the early hour of three o ' clock , soon after which the Lodge was opened and the minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed . The Reports of the Auditors , with regard to the Lodge finances and the Lodge Benevolent Fund , were received and adopted .

The Ballot was taken and proved in favour of Mr . Julius Lemel , aged fifty-nine , showing that the Craft welcomes all ages and classes when of good report . The Lodge was advanced to the second degree , when Bro . M . Jacobs answered tbe Craftsman ' s catechism , and was subsequently raised to the sublime degree as a Master Mason .

Bro . Emanuel W . M .-elect was presented by Bro . L . Lazarus , and signified his assent to the ancient charges and regulations . The Brethren then retired , and a Board of Installed Masters was constituted , when Bro . Emanuel was regularly installed in the chair by his predecessor in office . Both the ceremonies were ably rendered by Bro . H . Lazarus .

The new Master having been duly saluted and proclaimed then proceeded to invest his Officers , as follow : Isaac Cohen S . W ., J . Hamilton Craig J . W ., Joshua Hand Treasurer , Lewis Lazarus P . M . A . G . P . Secretary , Rev . S . J . Roco P . M . Chaplain , A . Cohen P . M . D . C , J . Brewer S . D ., M . D . Armstrong J . D ., W . L . Rosenthal I . G ., Ernest Reineman A . D . C , A . W . Savill Steward , W . C . Thorpe Asst . Steward , John Ives P . M . Tyler .

At the conclusion of the address Bro . L . Lazarus proposed , and Rev . S . J . Roco seconded , that the thanks of the Lodge be accorded to Bro . Harry Lazarus for his services as Installing Master , which was carried . Bro . L . Lazarus then presented , on behalf of the Officers , a Past Master ' s collar , jewel and badge , with solid silver ornaments . He said they considered

it an unique event that although their late Master had only been initiated twelve years he had twice occupied the Chair of the Lodge , a circumstance that had not occurred previously for fifty-three years . He had worked well and arduously for the Craft in general , and the Joppa Lodge in particular ; for six times he had acted as a Steward for the Charities . Per » onally , he was proud of him , and he considered he was a worthy type of a" Freemason .

The Master then presented Bro . Lazarus with an exceedingly handsome jewel , on behalf of the Lodge . Still the list of honours was not finished , for Bro . Van Bolon proposed , and Bro . Hand seconded , that in recognition of his services Bro . Lazarus should be made an Honorary Member of the Lod ge , and be exempted from all fees in the future . This was also carried . The fortunate recipient of all these favours returned thanks for these substantial presents , and trusted he might live many years to prove his gratitude for them .

After this interesting episode , the above mentioned Mr . Julius Lemel vvas admitted , and regularly initiated as a member of the Order by Brother Emanuel , who thus quickly proved his proficiency for the post of Master . Letters of regret for absence were read from several distinguished Brethren . The death of a member of the Lodge was announced , and a letter of sympathy and condolence was ordered to be sent to his widow and family . Bro . Emanuel having received the hearty good wishes of the Brethren , the Lodge was closed in perfect harmony .

The company then adjourned to the handsome Crown Room , where the banquet was served , at the termination of which a flash-light photograph was taken by Messrs . Fradellc and Young , of Regent Street , W . Bro . Emanuel , upon rising to propose the Queen and the Craft , was received with loud applause , and the toast was drunk with enthusiasm .

Bro . Lewis Lazarus A . G . P . responded for the Grand Lodge Officers , and bore testimony to tbe usefulness and high character of the late Lord Lathom , saying that no Mason ever left behind him a better name . The affairs of the Craft were under the able control of Grand Lodge , and while Masonic matters were under such government they had nothing to fear .

Bro . Henry Sadler expressed the pleasure he always felt in coming among his Jewish Brethren , and congratulated the Lodge upon having such an efficient Master as bad been installed that evening . He was now in his thirty-sixth Masonic year , but he had never before witnessed an initiation in a Jewish Lodge .

Bro . Henry Lazarus submitted tbe toast of the Worshipful Master , whom they were proud to see in the chair of King Solomon . He had served all the Offices most" creditably , and the manner in which he had performed the ceremony of initiation sufficiently proved that he was equal to his work . He hoped that he would have several candidates during his year of office , in order that the Brethren might see his work to perfection . Bro . Emanuel , in responding to the compliment , said the Lodge might be quite sure that he would render the ritual to the best of his ability . He

announced that he had arranged for a ladies night to take place on the 6 th March , when he hoped to have the pleasure of meeting the wives , daughters , and sisters of the Brethren . In responding for the Installing Master , Bro . Henry Lazarus said he thanked them all most sincerely for the very kind compliments that had been showered upon him that evening . His services would always be at the disposal of the Lodge , and he hoped to be with them for many years yet to

come . Bro . Julius Lemel , the Initiate , returned thanks for his admittance into the Lodge , in a modest little speech that was well received . It was noticed that the youngest Brother was nearly the oldest man present . Bro . W . J . Gardner P . M ., speaking on behalf of the Benevolent Fund of the Lodge of Joppa , said it was one of the great features of the Lodge , and

he believed it to be the parent of the similar funds in other Lodges . It started with small amounts , and had now amassed what might be called a considerable fortune . It was instituted to privately assist the members of the Lodge in time of need , when it proved very acceptable , and did not necessitate their misfortune being made public . It was hoped that no Brother would ever require to come to them , but if he did he would not be sent empty away . They had now £ 700 invested , and a sum in the Treasurer ' s

hands for emergencies . Last year they had given a hundred guineas to the Masonic Charities , and they always voted a sum to head the list of any member who was working as a Charity Steward . The Fund was especially useful in assisting any member of the Lodge to become either a Life Governor or a Life Subscriber to any or all of the Masonic Charities , and he was glad to state that most of them had embraced the opportunity . He thought the Lodge might well be proud of the Fund .

. Most of the representatives of the various Lodges present responded for the Visitors , and the Officers having been accorded their usual compliment , Bro . Ives brought the proceedings to a close with the Tyler ' s toast . During the evening some songs , mostly of a humorous nature , were given by Miss Blanche Hopkins , and Messrs . James George Tremlett , H . Baring , and others .

LANGTHORNE LODGE , No . 1421 . A MEETING was held at the Angel Hotel , Ilford , on Thursday evening , 29 th ult ., Bro . Alfred Taylor W . M . presiding . The first business was to raise Bro . W . Howell , and to pass Bro . James Deveson . The joining members were Bros . E . J . Ward and H . L . Pridmore . Those initiated were Messrs . R . Duncan , H . P . Vowler , F . Joy , H . Digby , and J . W . Stewart . An excellent dinner was afterwards served by Mr . and Mrs . Chown , the host and hostess .
