ST . JOHN THE BAPTIST LODGE , No . 39 . THE annual installation of this old Lodge was held at Exeter on St . John ' s day , nearly one hundred Brethren being present . No fewer than fortyfive Past Masters were in attendance , thus establishing a record for the Exeter district .
Bro . Jos . Gould was installed W . M ., the ceremony being conducted by Bro . Jno . Stocker Prov . G . Sec . for Devon . Reference was made to the death of Bro . Allen , and a vote of condolence was passed ! The annual banquet took place at the Rougemont Hotel .

MENTURIA LODGE , No . 418 . ON Tuesday , 20 th ult ., at the Masonic Hall , Hanley , Bro , E . V . Greatbatoh P . P . G . S . W . was installed as W . M . Bro . Greatbatoh was Master of the Lodge in 1887 , and , being an earnest supporter of Freemasonry , he accepted the principal office of his Mother Lodge a second time , to which he was elected owing to the death of the Senior Warden Bro . T . 0 . Slaney . Bro .
Greatbatoh served the office of W . M . of tbe St . Michael ' s Lodge , No . 2487 , to which he was elected after the death of the Senior Warden of that Lodge in 1896 . The ceremony of installation was performed by Bro . S . Salt , the retiring W . M . There were over a hundred Brethren in Lodge during the ceremony , including over forty visitors , and the Board of Installed Masters beat the record at Hanley , and probably in Staffordshire , at an installation , numbering over fifty .
After the Lodge had been closed the Brethren adjourned to the Town Hall , where a most excellent dinner was provided by Bro . J . Munro . The W . M . presided , and after the banquet proposed the Queen and the Prince of Wales Grand Master of England . Bro . Windle then proposed the toast of the Masonic Charities . Having made a few congratulatory remarks respecting the unusally large attendance ,
he said he was Charity Steward for Menturia for eleven years , but he gave up that position a year ago , owing to the state of his health at the time . While he was Steward Menturia got boys and girls into the Masonio schools and aid from tho Benevolent Fund and the local Charitable Association . He appealed to them to continue to support the Oharites , observing that he had been told that Bro . Howson , who had succeeded him as Steward , had obtained more money than ever he did in a year .
Bro . J . T . Howson responded to the toast . He referred to the extraordinary large sum raised for tbe Boys School at the last Festival , and mentioned that there had been exceptional demands upon the Charity Funds in that Lodge , whioh rendered the work he had undertaken rather difficult .
Speaking of the importance of supporting liberally the Staffordshire Masonio Charitable Association , he said he hoped when the list for Menturia waa completed it would show that that Lodge occupied the first position in the Province with regard to the A and B funds . The W . M . next proposed the Officers of Grand Lodge .
Bro . G .. C Kent , who responded , remarked that that was the third time that he had been present at the installation of Bro . Greatbatch as a Worshipful Master . He spoke of Bro . Greatbatoh as a most able man and Mason , and referred in complimentary terms to the way the ceremony had been conducted , making a special mention of the efficiency of the D . C . Bro . David Jones .
The health of the W . M ., proposed by Bro . Salt , was drunk with Masonic honours , and Bro . Hinchcliffe sang a song with a chorus , composed for the occasion , which was joined in by the whole of the Brethren present . Bro . Greatbatch , in responding , said this was the third time he had occupied the position to which he had been called that day , and on the last two occasions he had been chosen as W . M . owing to the lamented death of
Senior Wardens . They all regretted the death of Bro . Slaney , not only on account of his personal merits , but also because the Lodge had thereby sustained a severe loss . His earnest endeavour should be to discharge the duties of his- office to the satisfaction of the Brethren , and to secure the prosperity of the Lodge during the ensuing twelve months . The W . M . then proceeded to offer some words of advice to the , Brethren on the subject of Masonio ritual .

W . was installed into the chair of K . S . by Bro . Arthur E . Spencer W . M . At the close of the ceremony Bro . J . T . Simpson P . M . P . P . G . D . ( the Mayor ) presented to the retiring W . M . a Past Master ' s jewel , as a token of respect for the excellent manner in which he had conducted the business of the Lodge during the past twelve months .

Bro . F . Harvey P . M . presented the Treasurer s report , whioh showed that the past year had been a successful one , and that the Lodge was in a good financial position . Bro . Osborn presented the Librarian ' s report , whioh showed the library to consist of 270 volumes , many of them being rare and valuable . A catalogue was being prepared , and would be issued shortly .
