mHE ceremony of Installing Bro . J . Harris P . M . P . P . G . S . W . as J . W . M . of this Lodge , took place on Thursday afternoon , 29 th ult ., at the Masonic Hall , Winchester , in tho presence of a full Lodge and many visiting brethren , inclusive of the Prov . G . M . Bro . W . W . B . Beach , M . P ., aud several of his Officers , who were received with the usual honours . Tho ceremony of installation was performed by

Bro . E . D . Godwin , in a manner that elicited the encomiums of the P . G . M . and all tho brethren- Tho W . M . installed his Officers as under : —Bros- F . R . Bryan I-P-M ., I . Murray S . W ., G . F . Nixon J . W ., Captain Hall S . D ., W . H . Jacob J . D ., T . Stopher P . M . Treasurer , W .

Gamon P . M . Secretary , J . T . Clifton and H . Ventham Stewards , S . R . Everett P . P . G . D . C . D . C , S . Newman I . G . The brethren afterwards adjourned to tho Royal Hotel , whero a banquet was served by Mrs . Spriggs . The usual toasts followed .

UNION LODGE , No . 129 , KENDAL . THE annual meeting of this old Lodge , the oldest in tho Province of Cumberland and Westmoreland , took place at tho Masonic Hall , Stvaraongatc , on Thursday , 29 th January , afc four o'clock in tho afternoon . The Lodge was opened by the W . M . Bro . Banks , who was assisted by his Officers and a goodly number of members and Visitors . After tho confirmation of the minutes a gentleman was initiated by Bro . McKay P . M ., and subsequently a Bro . was raised by Bro . Nelson P . M . Tho W . M . then invited Bro . John Bowes P . M . P . P . G . J . W . to take tho chair as Installing Master .

Bro . McKay then presented Bro . Watson S . W . W . M . elect for the benefit of installation : the presentation being attended to , a Board of Installed Masters was opened in ample form in due course , tho Installing Master being assisted by Bros . McKay and Nelson . Bro . Watson having been placed in tho chair of K . S . according to ancient cnstom , ho was greeted , proclaimed and saluted iu the

various degrees . Each Olliccr , after investment by tho W . M ., was placed in his chair and addressed as to his situation , duties , & c . hy tho Installing Master . Tho final addresses to tho W . M ., Wardens and brethren were delivered by Bro . McKay . Tho ordinary business of tho Lodgo being completed , Bro . T . Wilson P . M . proposed ,

Bro . McKay P . M . seconded , and the W . M . supported , a cordial vote of thanks to Bro . Bowes for his invaluable services as Installing Master . The Lodge having been closed , the W . M . invited the brethren to his private residence to dinner , and wo need not say that a mosfc enjoyable evening was spent under his hospitable roof .

Cohen , who acted aa D . C . throughout tho ceremony , which , as rendered by Bro . Bassington , formed a fitting finish to his year of office . Bro .

Norden having received tho salutations of the brethren in due form , proceeded to invest his Officers as follow : —Bros . H . J . Phillips S . W ., J . Da Silva J . W ., C . F . Hogard P . M . Secretary ( re-appointed ) , A . Abrahams S . D ., A . Abrahams J . D ., J . A . Gartley I . G ., I . P . Cohen P . M . M . C ., H . Handy Steward , E . J . Ward Assist . Steward ,

Bassington I . P . M ., J . Rawles Tyler . Tho Secretary read a letter from Bro . C . Coote P . M . Treasurer , explaining that thafc Brother ' s absence was owing to illness , but accepting the office of Treasurer again . Bro . Norden said ho hoped to havo the pleasure of investing Bro . Coote on another occasion . Bro . A . M . Cohen P . M . called the

adjourned to partake of a banquet , which reflected great credit both npon Bro . E . H . Rand , manager , and Bro . Cohen , who catered for the Hebrew brethren . Grace having been said for the Hebrew brethren and for tho Christian brethren by Bro . I . P . M ., tho breth . ren did full justice to tho good cheer . When the repast was over ,

attention of the brethren to tho famine unfortunately ragin » in Ireland , and moved that £ 5 5 s be contributed from the Lodgo funds towards the Lord Mayor ' s list in aid of tho sufferers ; this was seconded by Bro . Hogard , and carried with unanimity . After several matters of interest had been disposed of , Lodge was closed , and tho brethren

the W . M . introduced tho usual Loyal toasts in brief but expressive terms , which enabled the toast list to receive fall justice without curtailment . The list presented a very agreeable feature , each toast being accompanied by an apt quotation from tho poems of Tennyson , Lord Byron , Burns , Longfellow , & c . That conplcd with tho Immediate P . M . —

Not Heaven itself upon tho pasfc has power , But what has been , has been , and I have had my hour , from Dryden , in imitation of Horace , being a good specimen . The toast of the R . W . Dep . Grand Master and the rest of tho Grand Officers Present and Past , received as hearty a reception as its predecessors , and was coupled with the name of W . Bro . J . L . Thomas

P . G . D . C , who , in response , said ho would fall in with the good example set by the W . M ., and rise at onco to thank thern in the name of tho Grand Officers Present and Past . Ifc afforded him great pleasure to meet his old friend Bro . Hogard , and to bo a gnost in this old and highly esteemed Lodgo . In our gatherings at Grand Lodgo wo hear a groat deal of the doings of certain Lodges , and tho

Lodgo of Israel is one of which wo hear a high account . Aa tho brethren so fully appreciated their Golf , ho felt snro they did their duty , and justified their appointment . Ho thanked them for tho cordial reception of the toast . Bro . I . P . M . Bassington next gavo tho W . M ., in appreciative terms . Ho said all would agree with him that they had tho right man in the right placo , and ho was sure from tho manner in which Bro . Nordon h . id conducted tho several

duties ho had performed in tho Lodge , tho brethren would havo every satisfaction from his year of office . In reply , Bro . Norden thanked Bro . I . P . M . for tho kind introduction of tho toast , and the brethren for the manner they had received it . Ho was now npon his trial , and hoped ho would receive the samo encomiums upon leaving that position as ho had on entering ifc . The Masonic Charities and tho

Lodge Benevolent Fnnd were next honoured . The VV . M . said ho had expected Bro . Terry would havo been present , but owing to tho death of that brother's father , ho was unavoidably absent . They all knew tho extent of the Masonio Institutions , bnfc they had one Institution near and dear to them , viz ., tho Lodgo Benevolent Fund . Ho would call upon tho brother who , in the pasfc as well as the present , had so

ably presided over ifc . Ho trusted it might soon attain the four figure proportions its president , Bro . A . M . Cohen , was so desirous of witnessing . Bro . Da Silva hero sang "Tho Anchor ' s AVeigued , " after which Bro . Cohen said ho wished tho Bro . Cohen of the pasfc days could respond for tho Bro . Cohen of tho present . To do full honour to tho toast ho shonld require tho eloquence of a Cicero , but

would do his best . Bro . Cohen gavo an interesting account of tho Lodgo Benevolent Fund , to which as its object was tho relief of Lodgo members only , thoy alone were asked to contribute . Ho hoped that tho brethren would that evening enable thorn to purchase another £ 100 of stock . Bro . Secretary was zealously waiting with a double pointed pencil , aud ho trusted tho brethren would respond .

To tho credit of the Israel brethren wo must say tho Secretary had a very busy timo of it , and with satisfactory result . The I . P . M . was next toasted , and tho Visitors then received a hearty reception . The W . M . had much pleasnro in giving the toast ; they woro honoured by tho attendance of representatives of tho Lodges of Tranquillity , Joppa , Montefiore , Samson , and Asaph . With each of these live

Lodges there exists a bond of union and sympathy with the Israel Lodgo . Ho would nsk Bro . Hymans W . M . Joppa 188 to respond for tho Lodges , and also couple with tho toast tho names of Bros . Nicholson P . M ., Athelstan 19 , and C . H . Webb P . M . 1607 . To Bro . Webb especially tho W . M . was indebted for tho proud position he then filled , ho having received instrnction from Bro . Webb . Bro .

Linging gavo a sketch , which created much amusement . Bro . Hymans thanked the brethren on behalf of tho sister Lodges , and Bros . Nicholson and Webb also responded . Tho W . M . hero rose to say he would further connect tho names of Bros . Musto P . M . and Stephens with tho toast , they being respectively tho Preceptor and Hon . Sec . of the Lodgo of Instruction held under tho Warrant of the

Israel Lodge . This was received with enthusiasm , as many of tho brethren and the newly-appointed Officers arc gaining their Masonic knowledge at this Lodgo , which Bro . Norden claimed to bo one of the best to be found . Bro . Musto P . M . suitably responded , and the Past Masters woro toasted . Bro . A . M . Cohen said it would require but few words from him to express tho thanks of tho P . M . ' s . For

himself , for a great number of years , bo could say thafc thero was no capacity in tho Lodgo which tho P . M . 's had not filled , and were capable of filling whenever called upon . Tho Officers was next given ; of Bro . S . W . tho W . M . said it was only through his diffidence that he was not in tho position of W . M . Bro . J . W . they would find a first rate worker . Bro . Treasure ! - , he was sorry to say , was , throngh

illhealth , unable to bo present ; how well and faithfully he had always dono his duty his re-election wonld testify . Ho trusted tho G . A . O . T . U . would in His mercy and goodness bo pleased to speedily restore him to health . Bro . Secretary was well known to all , and the W . M . was sure if tho brethren were to search all the world they could not find his superior . Throngh his influence with the W . M ., he had brought

the Lodge out of debt , and with a balance on the right side . Ho asked them to drink to the Officers of the Lodge . Bro . S . AV ., in reply , said ho would simply thank them for the hearty reception of the toast , and assure them of hia constant endeavour to give them satisfaction . Bro . J . W . expressed himself almost overcome , in the presence of so distinguished an assembly of Grand Lodge Officers ,

representing as they did the elite of the Masonic world , surrounded as ho was by so many distinguished members of tho Craft , afc having to respond as an Officer of the Lodge . The cordial manner in which their health had been drunk was not only a reward for past labours , but would prove an incentive to work for tho Lodge , and so reach the proud position ho saw so many brethren had attained . On

behalf of himself and tho junior Officers , ho returned thanks for the toast . Bro . Secretary alluded to the lamented absence of Bro . Coote . He waa suro if good wishes and heartfelt prayers could have restored that brother , ho would have been among them . However , although upon a bod of sickness , ho had a first-rate doctor , a Bro . Mason—» Bro . Trollope—who Bro . Hogard believed was a Provincial Grand

Officer . We hope he will soon bo restored to that health he has hitherto enjoyed . Bro . I . P . Cohen P . M . M . C also humorously returned thanks , and the Tyler ' s toast was tho signal for dispersal , after spending a happy evening . Among the items contributing to thafc end may bo mentioned the excellent pianoforte playing of Bro .

Davies 1017 ; a capital rendering of " The Execution of Montrose , " by Bro . J . H . Clynds ( St . Michael's ) ; a song , " She wore a Wreath of Roses , " by Bro . Stephens ; a solo , whistled by Bro . A . Abrahams , & c , all of which were greatly enjoyed . The Visitors present wero—Wor . Bros . J . L . Thomas Lodge 142 F . G . D . C , C . A . Lodges there exists a bond of union and sympathy with the Israel Lodgo . Ho would nsk Bro . Hymans W . M . Joppa 188 to respond for tho Lodges , and also couple with tho toast tho names of Bros . Nicholson P . M ., Athelstan 19 , and C . H . Webb P . M . 1607 . To Bro . Webb especially tho W . M . was indebted for tho proud position he then filled , ho having received instrnction from Bro . Webb . Bro .

Linging gavo a sketch , which created much amusement . Bro . Hymans thanked the brethren on behalf of tho sister Lodges , and Bros . Nicholson and Webb also responded . Tho W . M . hero rose to say he would further connect tho names of Bros . Musto P . M . and Stephens with tho toast , they being respectively tho Preceptor and Hon . Sec . of the Lodgo of Instruction held under tho Warrant of the

Israel Lodge . This was received with enthusiasm , as many of tho brethren and the newly-appointed Officers arc gaining their Masonic knowledge at this Lodgo , which Bro . Norden claimed to bo one of the best to be found . Bro . Musto P . M . suitably responded , and the Past Masters woro toasted . Bro . A . M . Cohen said it would require but few words from him to express tho thanks of tho P . M . ' s . For

himself , for a great number of years , bo could say thafc thero was no capacity in tho Lodgo which tho P . M . 's had not filled , and were capable of filling whenever called upon . Tho Officers was next given ; of Bro . S . W . tho W . M . said it was only through his diffidence that he was not in tho position of W . M . Bro . J . W . they would find a first rate worker . Bro . Treasure ! - , he was sorry to say , was , throngh

illhealth , unable to bo present ; how well and faithfully he had always dono his duty his re-election wonld testify . Ho trusted tho G . A . O . T . U . would in His mercy and goodness bo pleased to speedily restore him to health . Bro . Secretary was well known to all , and the W . M . was sure if tho brethren were to search all the world they could not find his superior . Throngh his influence with the W . M ., he had brought

the Lodge out of debt , and with a balance on the right side . Ho asked them to drink to the Officers of the Lodge . Bro . S . AV ., in reply , said ho would simply thank them for the hearty reception of the toast , and assure them of hia constant endeavour to give them satisfaction . Bro . J . W . expressed himself almost overcome , in the presence of so distinguished an assembly of Grand Lodge Officers ,

representing as they did the elite of the Masonic world , surrounded as ho was by so many distinguished members of tho Craft , afc having to respond as an Officer of the Lodge . The cordial manner in which their health had been drunk was not only a reward for past labours , but would prove an incentive to work for tho Lodge , and so reach the proud position ho saw so many brethren had attained . On

behalf of himself and tho junior Officers , ho returned thanks for the toast . Bro . Secretary alluded to the lamented absence of Bro . Coote . He waa suro if good wishes and heartfelt prayers could have restored that brother , ho would have been among them . However , although upon a bod of sickness , ho had a first-rate doctor , a Bro . Mason—» Bro . Trollope—who Bro . Hogard believed was a Provincial Grand

Officer . We hope he will soon bo restored to that health he has hitherto enjoyed . Bro . I . P . Cohen P . M . M . C also humorously returned thanks , and the Tyler ' s toast was tho signal for dispersal , after spending a happy evening . Among the items contributing to thafc end may bo mentioned the excellent pianoforte playing of Bro .

Davies 1017 ; a capital rendering of " The Execution of Montrose , " by Bro . J . H . Clynds ( St . Michael's ) ; a song , " She wore a Wreath of Roses , " by Bro .
