The worthy Chairman of the evening was a member of their Lodge , and he was not alone an ornamental member , but an eminently useful ono as well ; all the members knew there could hardly be found a better Preceptor than he . The Chairman said he had a relic from the battlefields of South Africa ,

which had been sent over by a Brother who was fighting for his Queen and country . It was one of the chocolate boxes whioh Her Most Gracious Majesty has sent to her soldiers , and he proposed to pass it round for the inspection of the Brethren , at the same time hoping that each one present would kindly put something in it for those Brethren who were in distress , and weiro fighting the cause , of the Empire . The result was that £ 1 9 s was collected , and the Chairman thanked the Brethren on behalf of the Transvaal Fund .

Bro . Spiegel proposed the toast of the Secretaries , whom he regarded as the two great pillars of the Lodges—that on the left , Bro . Cox , of the Dalhousio Lodge ; that on the right , Bro . Taylor , of the Earl's Court Lodge . He had had the pleasure of knowing Bro . Cox for a number of years , and regarded him as an excellent worker , and a most capable Secretary . Of

Bro . Taylor , Secretary of the Earl ' s Court Lodge of Instruction—which as they know had recently been established in their midst—he had but little personal knowledge , but that was his own fault , for the reason that he had not yet paid the Lodge a visit . Still , he had heard a great deal concerning Bro . Taylor ' s good qualities , and felt sure he would prove himself a most effioient Officer in the new Lodge .

The popularity of Bro . Cox was evidenced on his rising to respond . He thanked Bro . Spiegel for the grand and kind way in which he had given the toast of himself and his colleague Bro . Taylor . It was at all times a pleasure to him to see one or both of the Lodges of Instruction well attended . There was a certain amount of trouble attached to the office of Secretary , but what he did was cheerfully undertaken and was purely out of love for Freemasonry . If the Brethren would only give him their support he would be amply repaid and fully satisfied .

Bro . Taylor added his thanks . He was honoured in being Secretary of the Earl ' s Court Lodge , which he was happy to say was in a very prosperous state for a young Lodge , with plenty of work to do . Their two Lodges worked most harmoniously together ; he was well supported by Bro . Cox and Bro . Facey P . M . of the Mother Lodge , and should he be in any trouble he had only to ask those Brethren for their assistance to ensure all the aid he required .

Bro . Dyer S . W . of the Dalhousie Lodge said it would be very difficult to find more harmonious working than existed in the two Lodges which , met under that roof . He had qualified himself for the honourable position he " filled in his Mother Lodge , principally by attending the meetings of these Lodges of Instruction . He sincerely thanked ' the Preceptors of both for the great attention they had paid him , and strongly advised younger members to attend , as it would be impossible to find better tutors than the two Preceptors . .- . . ¦ ••

Bro . Facey P . M . said if they desired to meet really good fellows they could hardly do better than attend one of the Lodges whose joint meeting they were then enjoying . The sociability of that gathering showed them as man to man the true principles of Freemasonry . On behalf of the younger Lodge he sincerely thanked the Dalhousie members for their kindness . They had allowed them the use of their furniture , and in many ways'hnd assisted them .

He also desired to thank host Davis , for the , ample accommodation he afforded them ; and the Brethren who had taken such great interest in the Earl ' s Court Lodge , particularly Bro . Cox , who , as a Grand Officer , had honoured them with his membership . He welcomed the younger members of the Lodge , and strongly urged them to attend instruction meetings if they desired to make themselves efficient for their regular Lodges .

Prosperity to the two Lodges of Instruction was next proposed , coupled with the names to Bro . A . Williams and J . Worth the Preceptors , and this was regularly acknowledged . In proposing the toast of the host , the Chairman said Bro . Joel Davis deserved great oompliment for the able way in which the dinner had been served and for his kindness whenever the Lodges met under his roof .

The toast was most cordially received , and Bro . Davis , in acknowledgment , said it was not alone an honour but a pleasure to be amongst such company . He thanked them for their encouraging remarks , and was indeed pleased to hear his efforts had given satisfaction . During the evening some capital songs ^ were rendered , among those who contributed to the harmony being the Chairman , Bros . W . Lewis , Neighbour Worth , Heelis . and Robertson . Bro . Facey recited the " Jackdaw of Rheims , " while Bro . Godfrey Snell presided at the piano . Altogether , the meeting was one of the most enjoyable it has been our pleasure to take part in .

CONFIDENCE LODGE , No . 193 . rTVHERE was an excellent meeting on Wednesday evening , at 7 o ' clock , at JL the Bunch of Grapes , Lime Street , E . C ., when Bro . J . Done acted as W . The popularity of Bro . E . J . Davey P . M . Secretary of the Mother Lodge amongst the Brethren was evinced by the very hearty welcome he received on attending again after his illness . The W . M . intimated his intention of rehearsing the ceremony of initiation , for which Bro . Hattersley offered himself as candidate . This being ended Bro . Spice Preceptor , in his usual perfect manner , gave the ancient charge .

The W . M . next examined and entrusted Bro . Rowland as a candidate for passing , and then vacated the chair in favour of Bro . J . W . Simeons , who opened the Lodge in the second degree and proceeded with the ceremony . The Lodge was resumed to the first degree , the W . M . again took charge , and proceeded to close in due form . The Preceptor proposed that a hearty vote of thanks be passed to Bro . Done , and recorded on the minutes , for the able and impressive manner in

which he had fulfilled the duties of the chair for the first time in that or any other Lodge . His working had given great satisfaction , and considuring that their W . M . that evening was only a very young Mason the performance had been greatly to his credit . If he continued to make equal progress he would become a great acquisition in the Mother Lodge . Bro . Done thanked the worthy Preceptor for his very kind remarks , and hoped that on some future occasion he would have the opportunity of filling the same position again . The ceremony of initiation was rehearsed , the candidate ' s place being taken by Bro . Benn , after which the Lodge was opened in the second degree and Bro . Elkin was examined and entrusted . The Charity votes sent to this Lodge of Instruction were ordered to be handed to the Preceptor , along -with many others , to Bupport the case of Oliver Chesterfield at the forthcoming election , and Bro . Craggs Secretary asked the Brethren to do all they could to support the West London Masonic Eleotion Association in their good work .

ECLECTIC LODGE , No . 1201 . ON Sunday evening , at 7 o'clock , we paid this Lodge a visit at the Frascati Restaurant , Oxford Street , W ., and knowing the capability of Bro . E . C . Mulvey Past Grand Pursuivant as a Preceptor we felt sure we

should hear the ritual of Freemasonry well rehearsed . Bro . Mulvey shows courtesy , but firmness in the Lodge as an Instructor , which we consider a necessity , and to the credit of himself and the numerous Lodges he attends in that capacity ; indeed , the Brethren may be proud of having such an excellent worker to act as tutor in a Lodge .

Leach offered himself candidate , and , being accepted , he was examined and entrusted ,, the work of passing being rehearsed . Both the ceremonies were impressively , rendered .

The Lodge was resumed to the first degree , and Bro . Godrich was elected W . M . for to-morrow ( Sunday ) , which compliment was acknowledged . Bro . Mulvey in well measured terms proposed that a hearty vote of thauks be recorded on the minutes for the able and efficient manner in which Bro .

Sinclair had rehearsed the first and second ceremonies for the first time in that Lodge . Bro . Mulvey observed that considering the W . M . was not a born Englishman the working was admirably rendered . Bro . Sinclair in a few words acknowledged the compliment paid him , and hoped to do still better on a future occasion .

The Lodge meets every Sunday , at 7 o ' clock sharp , with Bro . Mulvey as Preceptor . Visiting Brethren will receive a hearty welcome .
