REPORTS OF MEETINGS .

We shall be pleased to receive particulars of Masonic meetings for * insertion in our columns , and where desired will endeavour to send a representative , to report Lodge or other proceedings .

CRAFT : METROPOLITAN . CHOUGH LODGE , No . 2264 . THURSDAY , 28 th ult ., witnessed the completion of one of the most successful periods in the history of this Lodge , which has been under the direction of Bro . Horatio Saqui as W . M . for the year ; and the commencement of a new era which gives every promise of adding to the reputation enjoyed by the Lodge , for excellent working and jovial good fellowship .

The meeting was held at the Cannon Street Hotel , and was well attended by members and visitors , all of whom were afforded a real Masonic treat in Lodge , the working of Bro . Saqui being such as to afford enjoyment to all who can appreciate a perfect and dramatic rendering of the ritual and ceremonies . Bro . Saqui was supported by Bros . W . Vincent Jull I . P . M ., H . Francis P . P . G . D . acting S . W ., Alfred Haynes W . M .-elect J . W ., Walter B . Marcus

Sabine , and several others .

Amongst Visitors we had the pleasure of seeing Bros . S . Jacobs P . P . G . P . Herts , J . Speller P . P . G . D . Essex , H . Francis P . P . G . D ., C . F . Quick P . P . G . Supt . of Works , P . Kreisman 205 , F . Dixon 171 , F . W . Denny 1772 , H . Raphael P . M . 2265 , S . Wilkinson P . M . 1269 , H . A . Sheppard W . M . 1677 , L . Medhurst 1692 , R . S . West 1774 , J . Davison P . M . 897 , Percy Gray , H . Pink , J . Jackson , J . Wynman , and several others .

The Lodge was formally opened and the minutes of the last regular meeting of 30 th March , and of an emergency meeting in April , were read and confirmed , after which Mr . John Reed Thomas , who was balloted for at the previous meeting , was regularly and impressively initiated into the mysteries of ancient Freemasonry .

The Lodge was opened in the second degree , and Bro . Alfred Haynes was presented to the Worshipful Master ( by Bro . Walter Martin P . M . P . A . G . P . ) for installation as ruler of the Chough Lodge for the ensuing twelve months . Having taken the obligation and signified his assent to the ancient regulations , a strong Board of Installed Masters was formed , and he was duly installed in the chair of K . S . by the W . M . Bro . Saqui in the most perfect manner .

Tho Brethren having been re-admitted saluted the new ruler in the different degrees , and Bro . H . Saqui concluded the ceremony of the year by giving the three addresses . We may safely say that the beautiful addresses have never been better delivered , and Bro . Saqui deserves to be highly complimented for having retired as W . M . in so creditable a manner , in fact , in a blaze of glory ; while the Brethren of the Chough Lodge may well be proud of having an additional good worker amongst their Past Masters .

The new Worshipful Master proceeded to invest his Officers , as follow : Bros . C . Frohlich S . W ., J . A . Smith J . W ., Walter B . Marcus P . M . temporarily as Treasurer and Secretary ( on account of Bro . E . T . Edwards being on a voyage to recruit his health , and Bro . J . W . Dewsnap being indisposed ) , W . G . A . Edwards P . M . S . D ., G . H . Ingle J . D ., L . Schneiders I . G ., W . J . Sowden D . C ., Turle Lee Org ., W . T . Hunt and J . H . Mullerhausen Stewards , T . Bowler P . M . Tyler .

The able manner in which the W . M , invested his Officers gave ample proof of his ability as Worshipful Master . Several letters were read from Brethren regretting their non-attendance , special among them being one from Bro . J . W . Dewsnap Secretary of the Lodge , who explained his absence as resulting from ill health , which announcement was received with great regret .

A gentlemen was proposed for initiation at the next regular meeting , the W . M . received well earned hearty good wishes , and the Lodge was closed with solemn prayer , the Brethren adjourning to the banqueting room , where an excellent dinner was served under the personal direction of Bro . W . G . Feneley , manager of the Hotel . The cloth being removed the W . M . gave the toast of the Queen and the Craft , which was received with musical honours .

The health of the M . W . G . M . the Prince of Wales was next presented by the W . M ., who said all Brethren knew the interest His Royal Highness took in Freemasonry ; he also spoke of the other Grand Officers , and had very much pleasure in coupling with their toast the name of Bro . Walter Martin , who set them a good example as a Grand Officer .

Bro . Walter Martin thanked the W . M . for his kindness in mentioning ms name amongst the Grand Officers . He had the pleasure of being an honorary member of the Chough Lodge , and saw with delight it was prosperous . He most sincerely congratulated the W . M . on occupying the honourable chair , and wished him a prosperous year of office ; he also congratulated Bro . Saqui on having vacated the chair with such well

deserved honours . He strongly advised the Brethren to attend the Lodge of Instruction , of which he was the Preoeptor , and which was held every Monday , at the Whittington Hotel , Moor Lane . The able manner in which Bro . Saqui had delivered the three addresses and the ability he had displayed iu investing his Officers showed that practice at the Instruction Lodges had made him Derfect .

The Immediate Past Master now assumed the gavel , and proposed the health of the W . M . This was indeed a very pleasant task . The able manner in which he had invested his Officers was a fair sample of his ability , and he wished him every success and a prosperous year of office , a sentiment which the Brethren endorsed with good Masonic fire . The Worshipful Master of the Lodge , who on rising met with

a hearty reception , sincerely thanked the I . P . M . for his very kind remarks , and the Brethren for having received the toast in such a cordial manner . The picture had been painted better than the original , but he had always done his duty to , the Craft , and especially to the Chough Lodgo , to the best of his ability , and was sure that with the able assistance of his Officers he would give the members that satisfaction whioh was expected from him .

The next toast the W . M . had very much pleasure to give , it being that of the Immediate Past Master Bro . Saqui . There were not many words required as to his splendid qualifications ; he had given every satisfaction during the year , and his rendering of the installation had crowned it all ; it was somewhat of a misfortune to follow so excellent a worker , but he would try to walk in his footsteps . He had now very much pleasure in presenting

to the I . P . M . the jewel which had been subscribed for by the members , and in doing so expressed the wish that he might wear it for many years to come , in good health and prosperity , and that in a future time his children might look upon it as a well deserved heirloom . He further hoped the I . P . M . would be with the members for many years to come , and would give them the advantage of the knowledge he possessed in Freemasonry . The jewel bore the following inscription : —

Presented to BBO . HOEATIO SAQUI , by the Brethren of the Chough Lodge , No . 2264 , for his valuable services as W . M , September 1898-99 . Bro . Saqui , who was received with an ovation , said it was very gratifying to know he had given satisfaction , but he little knew at the time he took office the great responsibility attached to it ; if he had done so he would not

have entered upon it in such a light hearted manner . Although the cares of office had not aged him , still he could say that now it was all over he felt a great weight off his shoulders . The beautiful jewel that had been presented to him showed that the Brethren had been satisfied , and the reception they had given him would linger in his mind for many years to come . He thanked the Officers for the able support they had rendered him during his year of office , and hoped that the present Worshipful Master would have a atill better and more prosperous year than he had had .

The W . M . now proposed the Visitors , saying that the Chough Lodge was pleased to be honoured by the attendance of so many guests , and offered them a most hearty welcome , with the hope of seeing them again on a future occasion . He was delighted to see amongst the Visitors Bro . Percy Gray W . M .-elect of the Musgrave Lodge , No . 1597 , also Bro . H . Francis P . P . G . D ., J . Speller P . P . G . D . Essex , Charles Quick P . P . G . Supt . of Works , & c .

Bro . Quick said he had to thank the I . P . M . for being present that evening . He should long remember the cordial reception he had received at the Chough Lodge ; the working he had witnessed that evening was perfect . He wished the Worshipful Master a prosperous year of office . Bro . Francis was particularly pleased with the working , also with the reception accorded the Visitors . The Instruction Lodge had done a great deal of good , by producing such excellent workers , and the Instructor Bro . Walter Martin had had his reward that evening .

Bro . Jennings said the Chough Lodge was one of the happiest homes in the Great City ; he had admired and enjoyed the excellent working , and thanked the W . M . for his kind reception . Bro . Raphael said it was the first visit of his in the Lodge , hut he hoped it would not be the last ; he had intensely enjoyed the ceremonial , as it was all that could be desired . Being W . M . of the Barnato Lodge he would be happy to see the W . M ., Past Masters and Officers at his Lodge . He again thanked the W . M . for his kind reception .

Bro . Percy Gray also acknowledged the compliment ; at the same time saying he was the Secretary of the Duke of Cornwall Lodge , and giving a full explanation of the working of that Lodge , and their Charity Association . Other Visitors also made suitable response . The W . M . gave the toast of the Past Masters , saying the number present

was rather small ; somo were ill and some were unable from other causes to attend . The Past Masters were the pillars of the Lodge ; there was Bro . Walter Martin ; also Bro . Marcus , who so kindly fulfilled the duties of Treasurer and Secretary that evening , on account of the Treasurer being away and Bro . Dewsnap unfortunately ill . He coupled the names of Bro . Jull and Smith with tho toast .

Bro . Smith thanked the W . M . for having associated his name amongst the Past Masters , and was pleased to be one of them . He was glad to see the W . M . in the chair , and was sure the Brethren has elected the right man , one who would do service to the Lodge . Bros . Marcus , Jull , and other Past Masters also made reply . The toast of the Initiate was proposed by the W . M . in very happy terms . He spoke of the great attention the newly admitted Brother had paid to the ceremony of initiation , and felt sure he would make an excellent Mason .

Bro . Reed acknowledged the kindness of the Brethren in calling upon him so frequently , and for having drunk his health in so cordial a manner . He hoped to become a member worthy of their confidence . In proposing the toast of the Treasurer and Secretary the W . M . said he was exceedingly sorry they were not present ; the Treasurer was on a sea voyage to recruit his health , and Bro . Dewsnap was unfortunately laid up ; but they hoped to see them at the next meeting in good health . He coupled with the toast the name of Past Master Marcus , who had so kindly acted as Treasurer and Secretary that evening .

Bro . Marcus , in response , said he first desired to congratulate the W . M ., whom he was pleased to say had invested the Officers in a most creditable manner . Whatever assistance he could render he would be happy to give . Ho was pleased to say the Lodge was in a very satisfactory financial state , and was sura the Worshipful Master would do everything in his power to make it still more prosperous that it was at present .
