The D.P.G.M. Of West Yorkshire.

THE D . P . G . M . OF WEST YORKSHIRE .

AS already mentioned in our columns , advancing years has induced Bro . Henry Smith , of Wakefield , to resign his office as Deputy Provincial Grand Master of West Yorkshire , a position which he has filled with credit aDd distinction for ten years .

There is a general feeling among West Yorkshire Freemasons that the long and faithful services of the retirirjg Deputy should be recognised in some way , and in order to consider the most suitable form that this acknowledgment should take a largely attended and representative meeting was held at the Masonic Hall , Great George Street , Leeds , on Saturday

afternoon . The gathering , which was presided over by the Provincial Grand Master the Right Hon . W . L . Jackson , M . P ., consisted principally of members of the West Yorkshire Charity Committee and Masters of Lodges throughout the Province .

In the first place a resolution was adopted acknowledging the services of Bro . Smith to Freemasonry in West Yorkshire , and expressing the opinion that those services ought to be suitably recognised . Some discussion followed as to the form the recognition should take , and ultimately it was agreed to endow

the Deputy Provincial Grand Master s chair in perpetuity , making the occupant for the time being a vice-patron of the three Masonic Institutions in London , and also to present Bro . Smith with a personal memento , the character of which is to be decided upon hereafter . The minimum cost will be about 520 guineas .

About 100 guineas was promised in the room , and it was understood that all the Lodges in the Province will have an opportunity of contributing . Bro . Herbert G . E . Green Provincial Grand Secretary , of Wakefield , was appointed Secretary of the fund , and Bro . R . I . Critchley , of Dewsbury , consented to act as Treasurer . — " Yorkshire Post . "

As marking the growth of the Craft in the country we may mention a remark made by the Deputy Prov . G . M . Derbyshire , when presiding at the annual nit-eting of that Province , to the effect that when he joined the Craft there were but six Lodges in the county , whereas now the number was twenty-six .

Derbyshire.

THE annual festival of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Derbyshire was celebrated at the Masonic Hall , Derby , on Thursday , 28 ch ult . In the absence of the Provincial Grand Master His Grace the Duke of Devonshire the Deputy Provincial Grand Master Bro . H . C . Okeover presided , and there were upwards of 200 Brethren present , representing every Lodge in the Province .

The Worshipful Masters of the various Lodges presented their reports , which were of a very satisfactory character . The reports of the various Committees were also presented and adopted . In reference to the report of the Charity Committee ,

which proved that nearly £ 600 had been subscribed , a vote of thanks was accorded to Bro . Percy WallisP . P . S . G . W . ( chairman of the Committee ) for his zeal and energy on behalf of the work for which the Committee was responsible .

A notice of motion by Bro . Walhs , for the granting of twenty guineas out of the funds of the Provincial Grand Lodge for the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , having been favourably dealt with , the election of Treasurer wa 3 proceeded with . There were two candidates for the office , namely Bro . Wm . Cooper P . M .

Arboretum Lodge , proposed by Bro . Wm . Henry Marsden P . P . SG . W . P . G . S . B . England , and seconded by Bro . Percy Wallis P . P . S . G . W . ; and Bro . Richard Thornley P . M . Peverilof the Peak Lodge , proposed by Bro . H . Barber P . P . J . G . D ., and seconded by Bro . Jas . Whitehead P . P . G . D . C . It was stated by

Bro . Thornley ' s supporters that they had no personal objection to Bro , Cooper , whose qualification for the office they quite admitted , but they acted on principle , and by way of protest 'to such a high office as that of Provincial Grand Treasurer being always held by a member of one of the Derby Lodges . On a vote being taken , Bro . Cooper was elected by a large majority .

The Masonic Hall Committeo of Management and the Charity Committee having been re-appointed , the following resolution was , on the motion of Bro . W . H . Marsden , seconded by Bro . Thomas Cox P . P . S . G . W ., adopted : — " That the election of Treasurer shall take place by ballot at the annual meeting of the

P . G . Lodge . No Brother shall be eligible for election to the office unless he has been nominated in writing by two members of P . G . Lodge . Such nomination must be in the hands of the Provincial Grand Secretary not later than 29 th September in each year , for the election at the ensuing annual meeting . "

The appointment and investment of Prov . Grand Officers for the ensuing year was then proceeded with , as follows : —

G . M . the Duke of Devonshire would preside . The annual banquet was subsequently held , a toast list of a Masonic character being gone through . — " Sheffield Independent . "

The Archdeacon of London , Past Grand Chaplain of England and Chaplain of the Scots Lodge , No . 2319 , has invited the Master , Wardens , and other Officers and members of that Lodge to view the mosaics at St . Paul's Cathedral to-day ( Saturday ) . The invitation has been accepted .

BRO . BENJAMIN COX , of Weston-Super-Mare , died on Saturday , 30 th ult . He was a prominent Freemason , says the " Western Press , " and very few men in the county took so many of the fancy degrees in Masonry . He was a P . M . of the Lodge of St .
