Royal Masonic Institution For Boys.

ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR BOYS ,

BRO . A . H . BATEMAN P . M . 33 gave another of his interesting Lectures to " Our Boys" in the Assembly Hall , on Friday evening , 22 nd ult . The subject , " The Electric Telegraph , " was most ably dealt with , in a manner which could not be other than clear to the audience . By the aid of cleverly

designed diagrams the lecturer showed the growth of Telegraphy , from the earliest times to the present advanced stages of the electric system . His graphic description of the difficulties attending the laying of the pioneer American Cables was not the , least interesting

part of a most instructive lesson , and on the call of Bro . Glass ( who acted as chairman ) , our " lusty" Boys showed their appreciation of the lecture by according Brother Bateman very hearty cheers , renewed again on his promising a return visit with a further popular subject .

The Lecture was attended and enjoyed by several members of the Board of Management , including Bros . Glass , Fairchild , Burgess , Cummings , Stephens , and McLeod Secretary .

CHESHIRE BENEVOLENCE .

A MEETING of the Committee of Benevolence of the Province was held on Wednesday of last week , at the North Western Hotel , Crewe . In the temporary absence of Bro , John Clayton Chairman of the Committee , Brother Alan de Tatton

Egerton , M . P ., presided over the first part of the meeting . This included the calling of the roll , and the reading of the minutes of the meeting held on the 26 th June ; after which the Committee proceeded to the election of Chairman and other Officers for the

ensuing year . On the motion of Bro . John Armstrong P . M ., seconded by Bro . J . A . Evans P . M . P . P . G . Std . B ., Bro . John Clayton was unanimously re-elected Chairman , and on the motion of Bro . H .

Cheshire Benevolence.

Jackson , seconded by Bro . Cookson P . G . Treasurer , and supported by Brother Herbert Finch , Brother Colonel Dean was elected Vice-Chairman . The following Brethren were elected on the Provincial

Charity Council : —Stalybndge , John Wagstaffe ; Hyde , Henry Jackson ; Stockport , Herbert Finch ; Macclesfield , H . Gordon Sinale ; Crewe , A . G . Peterkin ; Altrincham , F . Broadsmith ; Chester , Wm . Peers ; Birkenhead , G . H . Browne ; Seacombe , F . Sharpe .

Petitions for relief were considered and grants made to applicants from Hyde and Stockport . The Chairman Bro . John Clayton had meanwhile arrived and took his position . Having apologised for and explained the reasons for his absence , he thanked the Brethren for the honour they had conferred upon

him by re-electing him Chairman , and he might assure the Brethren he would do all he could , conjointly with Bro . Colonel Dean ( whom he was glad to learn had been re-elected Vice-President ) , in the performance of the duties the position involved , and in the furtherance of the interests oE the Committee . They

had been successful during the year in having elected two girls on the educational list , having had a large amount of support outside the Province . At present they had no aged Freemasons on their list , but their voting power was now very considerable , having undergone a substantial increase , so that with the number

of votes carried over from last May they were most likely to be successful in their efforts should an eligible candidate be brought before them . He acknowledged the loyal response the Brethren had shown in the appeal for support of the candidates to which

he had referred . Year by year they were liable to lose strength through death and other causes , and he trusted , therefore , that the Brethren would continue the loyalty of the past , for which the Committee were so grateful .

Other matters of purely Masonic character came under a brief review , and the meeting proceeded to the election of Treasurer of the Benevolent Institution . Bro . Gordon Small had

very great pleasure in moving the re-election of Bro . Cookson ( Stockport ) . Nothing he could say would enhance the value of the services Bro . Cookson had already rendered in that capacity . The office was purely honorary , and Bro . Cookson had discharged the duties with the greatest care and efficiency .

The resolution was seconded by Bro . Jackson in equally complimentary terms , and supported by several Brethren warmly , and the appointment was carried with enthusiastic acclamation .

Petitions for annuities were then dealt with , the application of Mrs . Margaret Tinker of Hyde , widow of Bro . Thomas Tinker of Hyde , and that of Mrs . Johnson , widow of Bro . Johnson of Chester , were acceded to . The remainder of the business was that of the Cheshire

Masonic Educational Institution . Local sub-Committees were appointed for the nine divisions of the Province , an executive sub-Committee , and a Finance sub-Committee , the remaining business being of a formal character . — " Altrincham Advertiser . "

Fortescue Annuity Fund.

FORTESCUE ANNUITY FUND .

A- MEETING of the governors and subscribers was held at the Freemasons' Hall , Plymouth , on the 27 th ult ., for the purpose of electing an annuitant on the Fund . Bro . F . B Westlake was voted to the chair . There were six candidates lor the vacancy . After the scrutineers had counted the votes , the

Chairman declared the result to be that a member of Lodge 156 brought forward 340 votes and polled 596—total 936 , and he was declared elected . Cordial votes of thanks were given to the Chairman , Secretary , Treasurer , and Scrutineer . Bro . Shorto ,

of Exeter , spoke very forcibly of the desirability of working the two Provincial charities , viz ., the Devon Masonic Educational Fund and the Fortescue Annuity Fund , unitedly throughout the Province of Devon . — " Western Morning News . "

The annual supper cf the Clapton Lodge of Instruction , No . 1365 , will take place at the Great Eastern Hotel , Liverpool Street , on Wednesday next , 11 th inst . at seven o ' clock . Bro

J . D . Geddes W . M . of the Mother Lodge will officiate as Chairman , with Bros . A . H . Church S . W . and F . C . Linlott J . W . of the Mother Lodge as Vice-Chairmen . Bro . W . Finch P . M . 1365 is the Preceptor , and Bro . W . D . Church 1365 the Secretary .

We notice arrangements are still in progress for the holding of a lottery in connection with the Mother Kilwinning Bazaar ( to which reference was made in our columns a few weeks back ) ,

despite the fact that such a drawing as is proposed seems to be contrary to law . Tickets are being freely sent to English Lodges , bnt whether any response has resulted we cannot say We think such speculations are out of place in Freemasonry .
