several good men had joined the Lodge . He had known the latest Candidate since he wore petticoats , and with the exception of having initiated his own son , he was more proud and pleased in having initiated him that evening than any other candidate during his term of Office . He was the son of an old friend , a genuine and charitable Mason , and he felt sure the son would follow in the footsteps
of the father . He hoped to be spared to see him in the honourable position he occupied that night , and felt sure he would became an additional ornament to the Skelmersdale Lodge . He strongly advised the candidate to make himself acquainted with the ritual of Freemasonry by attending a Lodge of Instruction , so that in case of necessity he might be able to fulfil higher duties when they were required of him .
Bro . Ernest Jos . Bird , in reply , said he was proud to have been elected a member of the Skelmersdale Lodge . His father was a Past Master of the Southwark Lodge , and he should do his best to follow in his father ' s footsteps . He sincerely thanked the AV . M . for his kind remarks , and would endeavour to profit by his excellent and good advice . He sincerely thanked all the Brethren for their cordial reception .
Bro . Rawhngs W . M . next gave the toast of the W . M .-elect . He said the Brethren had put a man forward who would shine in the Lodge . The W . M .-elect was a better spokesman than he , and had a very powerful voice , indeed it had been said that some of the candidates when presented to him had been frightened by his gruffness , but he was kind hearted and would make an excellent
Master . The W . M .-elect might depend on the support of the Past Masters . He felt his successor would receive the same genuine support as had been accorded him during the past year . The new W . M . had worked up step by step , having received his first collar from Bro . Rowland when he was in the chair . He felt no Brother
should be elected to the honourable dignity of Master unless he was qualified to occupy the position , and felt pleased in being able to say that Bro . Farmer had all the qualifications that a W . M . required . He was sure he would be a credit to the Office to which he had been elected .
Bro . Farmer W . M .-elect thanked the W . M . for his kind remarks and good wishes , and the Brethren for receiving the toast in such a splendid manner and also for the unanimous vote by which they had elected him to the Office . The Skelmersdale Lodge was the largest in the south of London , and without the co-operation
of its members it was impossible for any Master to make it flourish ; it was , as the W . M . had said , the candidates who supported a Lodge . He had followed the W . M . in every Office , and was proud of being elected W . M . for the ensuing twelve months . He asked the Brethren to kindly pay the same attention to the gavel as they had done , and again thanked all for their unanimous vote .
The toast of the Visitors was given from the chair . The W . M . said he had intended to call upon a visitor who he found had already left with the candidate , which showed the initiate had speedily taken advantage of his association with the Craft . He now called upon Bro . Geo . Freame W . M . 548 to respond .
That Brother said that in view of the late hour he would not make a long speech in replying for the Visitors . He most heartily thanked the W . M . and members for their cordial reception , and Bro . Bell for his invitation .
Bro . J . B . Kitch Org . 1326 and other Visitors also responded for the hospitality shown them . The W . M . next presented in complimentary terms the toast of the Past Masters , Treasurer and Secretary , and the toast of the Officers of the Lodge having also been honoured the Brethren attended to the call by the Tyler , which terminated a most pleasant evening .
