First And Third Class Dining Carriages On The Midland Railway.

FIRST AND THIRD CLASS DINING CARRIAGES ON THE MIDLAND RAILWAY .

rpHE Midland Railway Company , which was 1- tbo first to allow third class passengers

to travel by all trains , has again made further provision for their convenience and comfort . Conimeueing on Monday , 3 rd July , the Midland Coaipany , in conjunction with tho Glasgow and South Western Company , placed ou the Seotch Service additional afternoon -exprosaes bet . veen London ( St .

O .. U . U v .. ., "" ,,....... ( ,. . . . .., . . . . . . . ,. uwu » . England , Lancashire , Ac . To these trains are attached specially constructed dining carriages , ono of whioh is for the uso of first class , and the other for third class passengers .

UV ^ U IU Pancras ) and Glasgow ( St . Enoch ) , starting from eaoh end at 1 * 30 p . m ., and serving Leicester , Nottingham , Sheffield , Leeds , and other towns en route , and giving connection with some of the principal centres in the West of

Luncheons' , dinners , teas , and other refreshments are served en route , in the best style , at moderate charges . The carriages , which have two six-wheel bogies , are constructed with steal under . frames , oak boJy frames , and panelling of Honduras mahogany . They ure GO feet long , 8 feet

wide , and 6 feet high at the doorway , and have a clerestory roof throughout , 8 feet 6 incb . 03 high , with lights and ventilators at eaoh side . Eaoh carriage weighs 33 tons .

Communication is established between tho first and third class oarriages by means of a flexible gangway for the use of theattBndants only . The first class carriage contains a general saloon with twelve seat * , a smoking saloon with nine seats , two lavatories , a 1 ~ . L L L _„ , ! l .: i . _ 1 and kitchen

luggage compartment , pantry , . The interior of the saloon is finished with American walnut , and the ceilings are richly painted and decorated . The seats are upholstered with crimson morocco leather , and arranged transversely at either side of a central gangway , BO that there is a separate seat for eaoh person . Tho tables are removable , aud can be readily fixed between

eaoh pair of seat 3 before tho dinner is served . Electric bells aro so arranged near the tables that passengers may call the attendants without rising from their seats . The pantry is fitted up with cupboards for glass , table liuen , provisions , wines , & o . In the kitchen

( which serves both carriages ) is a large cooking range and boiler , heated by gas , a refrigerator , and carving table . Cooking can be done in the kitchen for sixty persons at one time . The third class carriage is of tho same size aud construction us the first

class , but the dining saloon -will hold thirty , and tho smoking compartment thirteen parsons . The interior is upholstered with crimson plush rep . It also has two separate lavatories , luggage compartment , attendant ' s room and pantry . Tli 9 gangway in this saloon is a li'tle out of the centre to admit of

double seats on one side and single seats on the other . In the pautry and at endunts compartment of the third class carringo are uioro cupboards for crockery , provisions , & c , u boiler , hot plnte

for keeping dishes warm , u grill for chops and steaks , and auotber refrigerator . The carriages arj lighted by compressed oil gas , beu ' cJ with hot watsr pipes , and fitted with Automatic Vacuum Brake .

The increased comforts which tho Midland Company have once more placed at thedisposal of the third class passenger should resuk in a largo increase of the traffic over that line . To pleasure travellers and tourists between Scotland and England , tha prospect of these

new privileges will euroly be bailed with satisfaction , whilst to the commercial man whose business engagements often deny him an opportunity of takiug his lunch before the trains leave , the fact that he can eat his meal at leisure and iu comfort en route will be an immense boon .
