AT the quarterly meeting , held at the Masonio Hall , Frome , on Thursday , the 30 th ult ., Bro . A . G . Hayman 30 ° W . M . in the chair , the Right Wor . Bro . the Vicount Dnngarvan , Grand Senior Mark Warden of England , was duly elected as Worshipful Master for the ensuing year . The installation will take place afc Frome , on the

" Beauty and Fashion" is the title chosen for a new penny weekly illustrated paper for women and girls . It is produced in the confident hope that it will at once fill a position nofc hitherto occupied by any other paper , inasmuch as it will be published weekly , at the price of one penny , and will report and re-produce eaoh week—instead of each month , as is the case with existing cheap publications—the

latest fashionable novelties and intelligence in London and abroad . The necessity for a cheap weekly paper which shall deal promptly and artistically with all that appertains to the toilet , dress , the beanty of the home , the preservation of health , and those special employments and pursuits so essentially adapted to the capabilities of ladies , has long been acknowledged , and the object of the projectors

of "Beauty and Fashion " is to meet this demand . Besides introducing an original scheme of Photographic Beauty Competitions , a further original feature will be the early formation of a Domestic Registration Department , upon an original plan for mutual advantage of mistress and maid . Characters will be delineated from

handwriting and photograph , and Answers to Correspondents on all subjects will be given . What women are doing , what they have done , and what they can do , will also be a leading feature . Fiction will be well represented , and the illustrations will be by the best artists of the day .

When in Hobarfc in June last attending the inaugural ceremonies of tbe Grand Lodge of Tasmania , Lord Carrington was requested by the Grand Lodge Officers to forward as a memento his portrait . In compliance with tb ^ t request he recently forwarded to the Grand Lodge a large-sized lithograph . Ifc is a striking likeness , and shows His Lordship in the uniform of a captain of the Gentlemen-at-Arms ,

which honourable position he held from 1881 to 1885 . Afc the foofc he has placed his autograph , " Carrington , 1890 , " and when suitabl y framed it will be one of the best souvenirs of tbe formation of the Tasmanian Grand Lodge . Under a separate cover Lord Carrington wrote an autograph letter to the M . W . G . M . of Tasmania ,

Bro . R . D . Ponlett-Harris , asking his acceptance , on behalf of the Grand Lodge , of the portrait as a slight token of his appreciation of the pleasant time spent in Tasmania . Chief Justice Way was also requested to procure a similar token from Earl Kintore , and these , together wifch others commemorative of the occasion , will adorn the Lod ge-Room of the Masonio Hall .

SHARP REPLIES OF EMINEOT MEN . —Robert Hall , even when insane , did not loose his wonderful powers of repartee . An insincere condoler once visited him in the asylum , and said in a hypocritical tone , " What bronght you here , Mr . Hall ? " Hall touched his forehead with his finger , and replied , " What will never bring you , sirtoo much brain . " The extreme sensitiveness of Thackeray to

criticism is well known . He once said to Douglas Jerrold , " I hear that you have been saying that ' The Virginians' is the worst book I ever wrote . " " I never said anything of the kind , " said Jerrold ; "I said it was fche worst book thafc anybody ever wrote . " A lady who lived near Thomas Car lyle kept Cochin China fowls , and the crowing was so intolerable a nuisance that the philosopher sent to

complain of it . The lady was indignant . " Why , " said she , " the fowls only crow four times a day , and how can Mr . Carlyle be so much annoyed as tbat ? " " The lady forgets , " was the characteristic rejoinder , " the pain I suffer in waiting for those fonr crows . " The old nurse of James I ., having followed him from Edinburgh to London , entreated him to make ber son a gentleman . " My good

woman , " said fche king , " I might make him a laird ( landowner ) , bnt I conld never make him a gentleman . " " They tell me , Sir John , that you like a glass of wine , " said George III . to the Commanderin-Chief of Ireland . " Those who have reported thafc fact , " replied Sir John Irwin , " have done me great injustice . I like a bottle . " The Duke of Norfolk , who was muoh addicted to the bottle , asked

Foote , the actor , in what new character he shonld go to a masquerade . " Go sober , " was the instant reply . A young officer complained to Napoleon that he had been six years a lieutenant . " I served seven years in tbat grade , " was the answer , " and it baa not prevented me from making my way . " Napoleon was at one period of his career a great economist . He said , between St . Cloud

and Paris , to Lanriston , " Why does not the carriage go faster ?" " Ifc would , " answered Lanriston , " If more oats were allowed . " The transition from Napoleon to Wellington is easy . On one occasion the Duke was in imminent danger of being drowned at sea . The captain of the ship at bedtime came to him and said , " It will soon

be all over wifch ns . " Very well , " answered the Duke , " then I shall not take off my boots . " At some party , a lady of high rank asked him whether it was true that he had been surprised at Waterloo by Napoleon . " I never was surprised till now , " was fche characteristic reply . —From "Oassell ' s Saturday Journal" for October 1890 .

We are informed that Miss Nellie Lyons , of the Adelphi and several provincial theatres , has proceeded , under an engagement with Messrs . Williamson and Garner , to Melbourne , where she will open at the Theatre Royal , early in December , wifch Mr . Hamilton ' s

adaptation of " Moths , in which piece she will sustain the r 61 e of Fuchsia Leach . She will also sustain Miss Annie Hughes' character in fche " Middleman ; " and may possibly appear in " A Man ' s Shadow . " Miss Olga Nethersole and Mr . Charles Cartwright are also members of the company .
