LORD ROBERTS AND THE CRAFT .
AN emergency meeting of the Lodge of Edinburgh ( Mary ' s Chapel ) , No . 1 , was held in the Freemasons' Hall , Edinburgh , on the 29 th ult , for the purpose of conferringhonorary membership on Field Marshal Lord Roberts of
Kandahar , and Captain Hearn , of the South Staffordshire Regiment , Past Grand Sword Bearer of Scottish Freemasonry in India , and Past Grand Sword Bearer of England . There was a large attendance af Brethren .
Uti the motion or Bro . w . W . Robertson Worshipful Master , seconded by Dr . Dickson , honorary membership was unanimously conferred on Lord Roberts and Captain Hearn , and the latter took the customary obligation . The Secretary Bro . R . Wood Hawks read the following letter from Lord Roberts :
Army Headquarters , Pretoria , 21 st October 1900 . Dear Sir and Brother , —I am in receipt of your letter of 14 th September , and must apologise for being obliged , owing to press of work , to send you a dictated reply . I am much honoured by your request that I should become an honorary member of vour
ancient Lodge , and most gratefully accept . I shall hope to be able to visit Edinburgh before very long , and have an opportunity , when signing the roll , of thanking the members of your Lodge personally for the honour they have done me . Believe me , yours very truly ,
^ lgnedj K 013 ERTS . Captain Hearn ( who is a-candidate for the vacant office of Grand Secretary for Scotland ) afterwards delivered a lecture on " Freemasonry in Ladysmith during the Siege , and in Northern Natal . " The Captain was present at the
Battle of Talana Hill , and after the retreat from Dundee he was shut up in Ladysmith throughout the siege . He was Secretary of the Craft Lodge there , and Master of the Mark Lodge , which held their meetings regularly during that trying time . He narrated his experiences during the siege , and gave extracts from his diary and from the minutes of the Masonic

meetings which were held . On one occasion , he said , eighty members were present at the Lodge meeting , and almost all wore Her Majesty ' s uniform . During the early period of the bombardment , fche Charter of the Lodge was left in charge of
one of the Office Bearers , Lieutenant A . C . M'Lachlan , of the 18 th Hussars , and the books were buried , but on a representation by many enthusiastic Masons , the books were disinterred , and meetings were held at stated times during the siege .
A cordial vote of thanks was passed to Captain Heam for his address . At the close of the lecture a collection was taken for the Grand Lodge Annuity Fund .

for Glasgow City ; Captain George Hearn , of the South Staffordshire Regiment , Past Grand Sword Bearer of Scottish Freemasonry in India and Past Grand Sword Bearer of England ; Allan Mackenzie , Edinburgh * Chairman of the

rip HE remains of the late Bro . W . Edwards , A . R . C . O ., of JL Pall Mall , Hanley , were interred in Hanley cemetery on Saturday , 24 th ult . In the procession were representatives
of the Menturia Lodge ( Hanley ) , No . 418 ; and the Sutherland Lodge ( Newcastle ) , No . 460 ; and other Lodges of Freemasons , and of the Foresters' Society . A very large number of wreaths were sent from sympathising friends .
fTl HE proprietor of the Crown Hotel , Morecambe , Brother _ L John F . Willan , died on Thursday night of last week , at the early age of forty-four . Bro . Willan went from Windermere to Morecambe as station master at the old Poulton Lane Station , on the L . and N . W . Railway , but subsequently
became lessee of the refreshment bars on the Central Pier , and when the Company was reconstructed four years ago he was appointed a Director . He held that position up to . his death , being present at the annual meeting of shareholders
so recently as Saturday , 24 th ult . On the retirement of Mr , Duxbury from the Crown Hotel some years ago , Bro . Willan took over that hostelry . He was a prominent member of the local Lodge of Freemasons ,
