United Grand Lodge.

UNITED GRAND LODGE .

THE Quarterly Communication was held on Wednesday , under the presidency of the Pro Grand Master the Earl

Amherst . There was an exceptionally lar ' ge attendance , nearly three thousand Brethren attending during the afternoon to record their vote on behalf of one or other of the candidates for the Grand Treasurership .

H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught was unanimously elected Grand Master , and the result of the poll for Grand Treasurer was declared in favour of Bro . Horace Brooks Marshall , who polled 1 , 5 $ 8 votes , as against 1 , 213 recorded in favour of

Bro . Capt . John Barlow , who , as will be seen from a letter we publish elsewhere , has already decided to appeal to the electors of the Craft next year , when we hope he may be more fortunate than was the case this week .

THE Quarterly meeting was held on Tuesday , under the presidency of the Earl ot Euston Pro Grand Master . On the motion of the Earl of Euston , seconded by the Hon . A . de T . Egerton , the humble and grateful thanks of

Grand Lodge were most respectfully offered to the King , for his gracious intimation that he will be pleased to assume the position and title of Patron of the Mark Degree . The

letter written by command of his Majesty , acknowledging the receipt of the address on the death of the late Queen passed by Special Grand Lodge on the 19 th ult , was ordered to be entered on the minutes .

On the motion of Dr . Ernest Lane , seconded by Rear Admiral St . Clair , the Duke of Connaught was elected Grand Master , and he was proclaimed by Bro . H . E . Cousans D . C . On the motion of Bro . J . H . Whadcoat , seconded by Bro . W . A . Scurrah , Bro . Harry Manfield was elected Grand Treasurer .

The following is the Quarterly Report of the General Board , submitted on the occasion : By command of the Most Worshipful Pro Grand Master a circular letter was addressed to the Lodges and Brethren generally , ordering

that Masonic mourning should be worn for three months in consequence of the much lamented death of our late beloved Sovereign , Her Majesty Queen Victoria , which sad event took place on the 22 nd January .

A special Grand Lodge was held on Tuesday , 19 th February , which was very largely attended , and it was unanimously resolved that an address be presented to His Majesty King Edward VII . offering to His the

Majesty respectful sympathy of the Grand Lodge and the members of the Mark Degree , and further presenting the loyal and sincere congratulations of this Grand Lodge on His Majesty ' s accession to the throne .

The Most Worshi pful Pro Grand Master informed Grand Lodge that although His Gracious Majesty had retired from the office of Grand Master , which he had filled since 1886 , he had been graciously

pleased to assume the office of Patron of the Mark Degree . The Board has most sincere pleasure in recommending that the humble and grateful thanks of Grand Lodge be offered to His Majesty for this mark of his Royal favour .

The Board begs to announce with the greatest pleasure that His Royal Highness the Duke of Connaught and Strathearn Past Grand Master has been pleased to allow himself to be nominated for the vacant office . During the three months ending 31 st December 1000 , there have been issued : —Mark Certificates , 446 ; total registered , 42 , 446 .

Since the last report three Warrants for new Lodges have been granted , viz . : — - No . 545 , Dartmouth , Slaithwaite , W . Yorks . No . 546 , Hartford , Bedlington , Northumberland and Durham . No . 547 , Blagdon , Blyth-on-Tyne .

Royal Ark Mariner Certificates , oS ; total registered , 6 , 435 . His Royal Highness the Most Worshipful Grand Master previous to his accession to the throne was graciously pleased to re-appoint for a further term of three years , R . W . Bro . Abraham Woodiwiss as Provincial Grand Master for Derbyshire . . The Board has to report that the Warrant of the St . Thomas

INSTALLATION OF BRO . GEORGE HARGREAVES . THE annual meeting was held at the Freemasons' Hall , Manchester , on Tuesday , 19 th ult ., Bro . James Green W . M . There was an attendance of members and visitors numbering over thirty , and it is pleasing to note that the St . Andrew Lodge is making steady and satisfactory progress , both financially and in numbers .

St . Andrew Lodge , No . 34 .

Two Brethren were admitted into the Mark degree , and there is every likelihood of these being shortly followed by several others . The new members were Brothers E . E . Moss and Herbert Evans , both of the Newall Lodge , No . 1134 , and the ceremony of advancement was performed by Bro . J . Lawrenson P . M .

The installation of Bro . George Hargreaves S . W , Worshipful Master-elect then took place , the ceremonial being undertaken by Bro . Greeri W . M ., assisted by Bro . Julius Laurisch I . P . M . P . P . G . Register of Marks Cheshire , and other Past Masters . Bro . Hargreaves invested and addressed the newly-appointed Officers , after which Lodge was closed , and the Brethren adjourned to a very excellent banquet .

i HE death is announced of Bro . Rev . Dr . William Randall , which occurred at Brighton , on the 2 nd inst ., at the age

of 81 years . Our Brother was appointed Grand Chaplain . of England in 1890 , was a P . Prov . S . G . W . of Staffordshire , Past Deputy Prov . G . M . M . of Staffordshire and a P . M . and P . Z . of different Lodges and Chapters .

MUCH sympathy will be felt for Lord Henniker Prov . Grand Master of Suffolk and the Isle of Man and his family in the loss they have sustained by the death of his lordship ' s eldest son , the Hon . Albert Henniker-Major , who expired in London on Saturday from a severe attack of pneumonia ,

after a comparatively short illness . Two days before his son ' s death Lord Henniker intended to come to town from the Isle of Man to be with his son , but postponed the journey in consequence of receiving a favourable telegram respecting his condition . A relapse , however , took place on the Friday ,

and the patient expired the following day . He was in his thirty-sixth year , unmarried , and was formerly a captain in the . 3 rd Battalion of the Norfolk Regiment . Lord Henniker has four sons still living and five daughters . Lady Henniker who was a daughter of the third Earl of Desart , died in 1893 ,
