Ford , informing the brethren that her late husband had by his will bequeathed a sum of £ 50 to endow the chair of tho Lodge . Bro . E . Clowes W . M . expressed his regret afc the loss the Lodge had

sustained by the death of thoir P . M . Bro . Gerard Ford . Ho said ho was sure the brethren would all unite with him in acknowledging the ftaterual kindness with whioh Bro . Ford had always treated tho

members of the Lodge , and would desire to join in expressing thoir respect and esteem for him , and sympathy with Mrs . Ford . He would therefore move thafc the following address be presented to her : —

" To Mrs . Gerard Ford . * ' The members of the Earl of Sussex Lodgo are deeply moved by the letters whioh have boon read to them from their late loved and respected P . M . and Deputy Prov . Grand Master , and also have to acknowledge the kind letter whioh accompanied the notification of

fche legacy to the Lodge . " They desire to thank Mrs . Ford mosb sincerely for the touching words with which she has addressed them , and to assure her that fche trouble the late Bro . Ford took in arranging , establishing , and acting as firsfc W . M ., will novor be forgotten by fche brethren .

" They wish fco express their deep and heartfelt sympathy wifch Mrs . Ford iu her bereavement , and hope thafc the Almighty will give her strength to sustain her in her affliction ; although ifc is small consolation , thoy venture to believe thafc the affection and esteem in which be was held , so amply testified by tho Masons generally

throughout the Province , will at all events comfort her in her hour of trial , as proving that he who waa so much beloved by her waa thoroughly understood and appreciated by so many others . " Afc this , the first meeting after hia death , fche brethren wish to

place on record a testimony to hia worth , so thafc future generationa may be able to find particulars of the proceedings , and bear in remembrance Bro . Gerard Ford , who waa fcho originator , principal founder , and , during hia life , a mosfc active member of the Earl of Sussex Lodge .

"R . C LOWES W . M . " Royal Pavilion , Brighton , 26 fch Oct . 1889 . " Bro . V . P . Freeman seconded the proposition , and desired fco express in open Lodgo the fraternal regard the late Bro . Ford had shown for tho brethren , and hia anxiety to gain their affection and esteem .

Having been associated together for so many years , many of the acts of kindness which Bro . Ford had done had been known to him , aud he could bear testimony to the increase year by year of his popularity . Tho resolution was unanimously adopted . The newly-elected member for Brighton , Mr . Gerald Walter Etskino Loder , was proposed by

Bro . fche Right Hon . Sir W . T . Marriott P . M . as a candidate for initiation . The W . M . Bro . R . Clowes seconded the proposition . Bro . F . A . Philbriek Grand Registrar waa unanimously elected au honorary member of the Lodge . The Lodge having been closed , tho brethren adjourned to the banqueting room , whore they

sab down to an elegant banquet , supplied by Brother D . Mutton , whose catering gave the greatest satisfaction . Tho post prandial proceedings wero of a thoroughly hearty character . Tho W . M . Bro . Richard Clowes , who presided , gavo the customary loyal toasts , which wero duly honoured . Iu submitting tho Officers

of Grand Lodge , Present and Past , ho said that those who had been privileged to attend Grand Lodge must havo folt that ifc was ruled by energetic and zealous Officers . He himself regarded it a privilege to have around him so many Officers of Graud Lodge , aud he heartily thanked them for their kind attendance and support . Bro . F . A .

Philbriek , Q . C , Grand Registrar , in reply , said tho Officers of Grand Lodge took fcho greatest interest in the Province , and ho himself was deeply interested in the success of the Lodge . lie waa glad to see the Province and Lodge were making satisfactory progress , and said tbe brethren should feel proud of being presided over by such a

Provincial Grand Master as the Duke of Connaught . Bro . Colonel Shadwell H , Clerke Grand Secretary also responded . He said that , though he felt one response waa sufficient , he waa grateful for tho opportunity of speaking . Paying a graceful tribute to the memory of the late Bro . Gerard Ford Deputy Prov . Grand Master , he said he

himself was interested in the Lodge . He had assisted afc its consecration , installed the late Bro . Gerard Ford as firsfc W . M ., also their I . P . M . Bro . Sir VV . T . Marriott , and he had been pleased that day to instal the W . M . Bro . Clowes . Referring to the excellent work of tho late Bros . Sir W . W . Burroll and J . H , Scott , he said fcho Province

of Sussex was second to none . Their work was admirably done , and , from the reports ho received from timo to time from their indefatigable Prov . G . Secretary , ho saw that an excellent spirit pervaded the Province , and while harmony reigned supreme the Charities were well supported . Bros . J . 0 . Parkinson , T . J . Railing and Major

Lambert also acknowledged the toast , tbe last-named speaking in high terms of the excellent work in the Craft which Bro . Clowes had shown dnring his residence in the Essex Province . He congratulated tbe Sussex Freemasons upon having so good a brother among them . The W . M . then proposed the Provincial Grand Master H . R . H . the

Duke of Connaught and Strathearn , Earl of Sussex . The Dnke , ho said , was expected to return to England early next year , and ho waa saro no Lodge would give him a heartier welcome than the Earl of Sussex Lodge . In submitting the next toast , the Provincial Senior Grand Warden in Charge , the Right Hon . Sir William T . Marriott ,

M . elect ) as a candidate for initiation this was declared unanimous in his favour . The W . M . then asked

Percy Clowes Steward . Letters were read from the late Deputy P . G . Master , Bro . Gerard Ford P . M ., one enclosing lithograph of a letter received from H . E . H . the Duke of Connaught

P . G . Master , and another offering for the acceptance of the Lodge a portrait of himself iu Masonio clothing . A letter was read from Mrs . Ford , informing the brethren that her late husband had by his will bequeathed a sum of £ 50 to endow the chair of tho Lodge . Bro . E . Clowes W . M . expressed his regret afc the loss the Lodge had

sustained by the death of thoir P . M . Bro . Gerard Ford . Ho said ho was sure the brethren would all unite with him in acknowledging the ftaterual kindness with whioh Bro . Ford had always treated tho

members of the Lodge , and would desire to join in expressing thoir respect and esteem for him , and sympathy with Mrs . Ford . He would therefore move thafc the following address be presented to her : —

" To Mrs . Gerard Ford . * ' The members of the Earl of Sussex Lodgo are deeply moved by the letters whioh have boon read to them from their late loved and respected P . M . and Deputy Prov . Grand Master , and also have to acknowledge the kind letter whioh accompanied the notification of

fche legacy to the Lodge . " They desire to thank Mrs . Ford mosb sincerely for the touching words with which she has addressed them , and to assure her that fche trouble the late Bro . Ford took in arranging , establishing , and acting as firsfc W . M ., will novor be forgotten by fche brethren .

" They wish fco express their deep and heartfelt sympathy wifch Mrs . Ford iu her bereavement , and hope thafc the Almighty will give her strength to sustain her in her affliction ; although ifc is small consolation , thoy venture to believe thafc the affection and esteem in which be was held , so amply testified by tho Masons generally

throughout the Province , will at all events comfort her in her hour of trial , as proving that he who waa so much beloved by her waa thoroughly understood and appreciated by so many others . " Afc this , the first meeting after hia death , fche brethren wish to

place on record a testimony to hia worth , so thafc future generationa may be able to find particulars of the proceedings , and bear in remembrance Bro . Gerard Ford , who waa fcho originator , principal founder , and , during hia life , a mosfc active member of the Earl of Sussex Lodge .

"R . C LOWES W . M . " Royal Pavilion , Brighton , 26 fch Oct . 1889 . " Bro . V . P . Freeman seconded the proposition , and desired fco express in open Lodgo the fraternal regard the late Bro . Ford had shown for tho brethren , and hia anxiety to gain their affection and esteem .

Having been associated together for so many years , many of the acts of kindness which Bro . Ford had done had been known to him , aud he could bear testimony to the increase year by year of his popularity . Tho resolution was unanimously adopted . The newly-elected member for Brighton , Mr . Gerald Walter Etskino Loder , was proposed by

Bro . fche Right Hon . Sir W . T . Marriott P . M . as a candidate for initiation . The W . M . Bro . R . Clowes seconded the proposition . Bro . F . A . Philbriek Grand Registrar waa unanimously elected au honorary member of the Lodge . The Lodge having been closed , tho brethren adjourned to the banqueting room , whore they

sab down to an elegant banquet , supplied by Brother D . Mutton , whose catering gave the greatest satisfaction . Tho post prandial proceedings wero of a thoroughly hearty character . Tho W . M . Bro . Richard Clowes , who presided , gavo the customary loyal toasts , which wero duly honoured . Iu submitting tho Officers

of Grand Lodge , Present and Past , ho said that those who had been privileged to attend Grand Lodge must havo folt that ifc was ruled by energetic and zealous Officers . He himself regarded it a privilege to have around him so many Officers of Graud Lodge , aud he heartily thanked them for their kind attendance and support . Bro . F . A .

Philbriek , Q . C , Grand Registrar , in reply , said tho Officers of Grand Lodge took fcho greatest interest in the Province , and ho himself was deeply interested in the success of the Lodge . lie waa glad to see the Province and Lodge were making satisfactory progress , and said tbe brethren should feel proud of being presided over by such a

Provincial Grand Master as the Duke of Connaught . Bro . Colonel Shadwell H , Clerke Grand Secretary also responded . He said that , though he felt one response waa sufficient , he waa grateful for tho opportunity of speaking . Paying a graceful tribute to the memory of the late Bro . Gerard Ford Deputy Prov . Grand Master , he said he

himself was interested in the Lodge . He had assisted afc its consecration , installed the late Bro . Gerard Ford as firsfc W . M ., also their I . P . M . Bro . Sir VV . T . Marriott , and he had been pleased that day to instal the W . M . Bro . Clowes . Referring to the excellent work of tho late Bros . Sir W . W . Burroll and J . H , Scott , he said fcho Province

of Sussex was second to none . Their work was admirably done , and , from the reports ho received from timo to time from their indefatigable Prov . G . Secretary , ho saw that an excellent spirit pervaded the Province , and while harmony reigned supreme the Charities were well supported . Bros . J . 0 . Parkinson , T . J . Railing and Major

Lambert also acknowledged the toast , tbe last-named speaking in high terms of the excellent work in the Craft which Bro . Clowes had shown dnring his residence in the Essex Province . He congratulated tbe Sussex Freemasons upon having so good a brother among them . The W . M . then proposed the Provincial Grand Master H . R . H . the

Duke of Connaught and Strathearn , Earl of Sussex . The Dnke , ho said , was expected to return to England early next year , and ho waa saro no Lodge would give him a heartier welcome than the Earl of Sussex Lodge . In submitting the next toast , the Provincial Senior Grand Warden in Charge , the Right Hon . Sir William T . Marriott ,
